Dragon Age Trilogy Remaster Unlikely: “Nobody Knows How the Engine Works Anymore”

Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah says a remastered Dragon Age trilogy similar to Mass Effect Legendary Edition is less feasible than fans might expect as one of the biggest obstacles is that almost no one still at BioWare understands the older technology powering the original games.

Speaking in a recent interview with FRVR, Darrah explained that while a remastered collection—internally dubbed the “Champion’s Edition” during his time at BioWare—had once been discussed, the technical challenges have only grown over the years.

Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II were built using BioWare’s proprietary Eclipse engine (with Dragon Age II using an upgraded version), a technology the studio abandoned after moving to EA’s Frostbite engine for Dragon Age: Inquisition. As a result, Darrah says there are now very few developers remaining at BioWare who understand how those older tools work.

According to Darrah, creating a Mass Effect Legendary Edition-style collection would require far more than updating textures and improving performance. Before any visual improvements could even begin, BioWare would first have to reconstruct or reverse-engineer technology that few current employees have experience with.

He contrasted the situation with Mass Effect, whose original trilogy was built on Unreal Engine 3. Because Unreal remains widely understood throughout the industry, BioWare had a much easier foundation for producing Mass Effect Legendary Edition. By comparison, the custom technology behind the early Dragon Age games has effectively become legacy software.

Following the commercial disappointment of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Darrah recently expressed skepticism about the series’ future, suggesting EA has little incentive to revisit the franchise given its growing library of dormant intellectual properties.
