The official English viz translation for the manga isn't that good, and for most of it fan translations (plural because no one fan translation covers the entire manga) are better. There are also old and crappy fan translations that are worse than the viz translation that you want to stay away from. For the good fan translations you'll want to use one by a guy called molokidan to start, which goes up to late into the Tenshinhan saga, into the chapter 130s range. Now at this point there's really not any good fan translation, so the viz one is probably best. Up until a couple volumes later, when the mofogoku translation starts, which finishes at the ending of Namek (volume 22 of the kazenban re-release if that matters). I don't think any translation after this is up to those standards and I forgot what what the fan one is that you'll want to use.
There was a thread on 4cuck that dumped the whole manga two years ago, using what imo are the best translations available. You can compare what you're reading to the pages there to make sure you have what you want:
