We are making this series because America's greatness is not an accident, and it is not finished. What has made this country great is a recurring pattern; free people, given a hard problem and a runway, building something the rest of the world said could not be built. It happened at Lexington. It happened at City Point. It happened, on a scale almost nobody alive today fully grasps, between 1941 and 1945. On the night of December 29, 1940, a man in a wheelchair wheeled himself to a microphone in the Oval Office and spoke plainly. "We must be the great arsenal of democracy." He told his listeners: "Powerful enemies must be outfought and outproduced." Outproduced. That single word was the entire strategy. Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring said publicly that Americans could only make refrigerators and razor blades. He was right to be afraid. He was wrong about the reason. Between 1941 and 1945, American industry built 300,000 aircraft, 86,000 tanks, 12,000 ships, and 2.4 million trucks. Ford's Willow Run plant cut B-24 center-wing production from 250 man-hours to one. Henry Kaiser's shipyards launched a Liberty Ship in four days and fifteen and a half hours. Seventy-five percent of the drivers who kept Patton's tanks moving on the Red Ball Express were African American men barred from combat command, who took the assignment they were given and turned it into one of the most critical operations of the European campaign.
