None of you know this movie, but I am from Kyrgyzstan and a movie about the most famous author from our country (Chingiz Aitmatov) turned out to be completely made by AI, using AI voices. This was not reflected in the trailers. It was horrible. And they didn't even use a decent AI that generates vaguely believable videos, it was Midjourney. The main character kept switching ethnicities throughout the film, the voice kept changing making it impossible to tell who was speaking, it's shocking it even got green lit to exist!

We should expect better from Kyrgywood

[–]abu_doubleu 52 points53 points  (0 children)

As a fun fact we apparently make the 4th most movies per capita nowadays in the entire world. Most of it is low-effort, yet funny comedies but there are some real gems out there that would be popular around some circles worldwide if they realised the potential.

There is an award-winning movie usually called "Paradise Is Under The Feet of Mothers" in English, about a developmentally disabled adult son who takes his mother from Kyrgyzstan to Mecca by foot. You don't have to be Muslim to enjoy this story. The parts in Syria during the civil war are especially tense and well-done. There was an English fan dub but it was taken down. Now you can only watch it officially or pirate it with the official Russian or Uzbek dub, not even the original Kyrgyz…and no English subtitles.

I think you can find an older art movie called Белгесиз маршрут (Unknown Route) with English subtitles easily. I wonder if this would be interesting for foreigners to watch. It's from 2008. A minivan leaves to the village. It's a microcosm of Kyrgyzstani society at the time. For example, one character represents the hypocritical role that religious people can take, while another one represents the old socialist generation, and another represents the youth that blindly follow Western trends. There is no bias here whatsoever towards one side and it is a fascinating movie.

Kyrgywoo

[–]Fit-Historian-752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It deserved none of the Golden Goat awards it received.

[–]ChunkierMilk 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I mean the trailer is pretty obviously AI, that’s wild it made it to theatres

[–]rightdeadzed 132 points133 points  (40 children)

I need to see this movie.

[–]adultkarate 266 points267 points  (39 children)

lol the trailer is pretty bad already https://youtu.be/fKUOb6R1_kQ?is=aU_QgnYtvxXZWh64

[–]callmepickens 64 points65 points  (1 child)

Omg, the overly loud typewriter noises were comical! I could see this movie becoming a cult classic for the absolute ridiculousness of it

[–]abu_doubleu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just remember sitting in awe with my friend in the theatre, and trust me it gets worse, this trailer only shows the "best" parts. The creator literally could have bought a 1-month Sora (it still existed while this was being made) or Gemini or whatever subscription to at least make it SOMEWHAT quality…

[–]Trick-Statistician10 48 points49 points  (5 children)

I especially like the part where the animal, I thinks it a wolf, is running sideways along the train!

Why are the only comments on the trailer positive ones?

[–]hapiscan 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Lools like a fox to me, and also the giant duck was... Something, definitely.

[–]Trick-Statistician10 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Oh, that was a duck?

[–]hapiscan 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Well, I think so. Not entirely sure, tho.

[–]sluttypidge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a goose 😂

[–]joejoesewa 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This looks like something I would see in a 50 part tiktok series

[–]Daydream_machine 111 points112 points  (5 children)

This is INSANE 😭

[–]zer0w0rries 26 points27 points  (4 children)

"this was not reflected in the trailers"

-u/abu_dobleu

[–]abu_doubleu 18 points19 points  (2 children)

There was a different, short clip used in our movie theatres, where they used a short clip of nature and a real man walking in the mountains.

[–]Spirited-Way2406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So was the plan "take the advance money and run" or did the production team wildly overpromise and try to BS their way through it with Midjourney or...?

Also, do you have a comedy troupe like Mystery Science Theater 3000? Because that sounds like prime MST3K material.

[–]MrHappyHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they used stock footage for that

[–]Generic_Garak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s wild to me that anyone could see that and not immediately clock it as ai

[–]Trumpisaderelict 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Good Lord it’s awful 😂. Where can I stream it???

[–]am_Nein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"it's awful, I love it" that's the spirit!

[–]TheGringoDingo 40 points41 points  (2 children)

I get it as like a proof of a plan of a concept, but it doesn’t have to be released in theaters lol

[–]NarrativeNode 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah this is what people in Hollywood are doing to get funding and then actually make the movie the normal way.

[–]TheGringoDingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a hell of a pitch, if it can be done cheap enough

[–]NvizoN 7 points8 points  (2 children)

No offense but like...how did anyone see this and NOT know it's AI. It's very very obvious AI lol. The mouths don't work right and the animals are real odd.

[–]wildcatofthehills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fucking giant duck for example. Or the fact that the main character changes faces from scene to scene.

[–]Trick-Statistician10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And many of the people look like plastic

[–]Main_Scale_5806 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That trailer is a legit LOL

[–]human_picnic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many shots of someone, or some animal running after a train do you think they cut?

[–]UglyMcFugly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. The AI people in those ads trying to scam old people with grocery cards are 10 times more realistic than this slop.

[–]Norkestra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The irony of it being called "To Remain Human" lol...

[–]Chillinoisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True cinema 💕

[–]Empty_Following1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s Time to make this movie, the must see movie of the year.

[–]MrLukaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That duck flying over the train. Was fucking massive 😂

[–]Longo_Rollins6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog, I couldn't even finish the trailer 😂

[–]Din-_-Djarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost dropped my phone when the "train whistle" went off

[–]KaiCypret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectacular!

[–]IputSunscreenOnHorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I saw a duck flying like an eagle at 1:20

[–]bluesox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling it “To Remain Human” is some kind of joke

[–]TheAmazingDuckOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair it says in the description that it's "the first ai movie". Still terrible but at least they're straightforward.

[–]Justanotherguy88 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I hate to admit it but I really liked the cinematography in many of those shots. The very first full AI masterpiece of a movie is happening sooner than we're ready for it.

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s because it’s stolen from actual films, so it’s reminiscent of good cinematography, but they aren’t actually “good” shots, it doesn’t have any of the same small details or movements, they only even partially work when seen for a split second in a trailer.

Personally I also think they aren’t really good shots unless they flow together to actually mean something. There’s no coherence between them, and good cinematography in films has to have connections and a flow between them.

I don’t think we’re going to be seeing an AI masterpiece anytime soon - they couldn’t even keep people and objects from floating around the screen and changing sizes/races/shapes/etc. lol

[–]Chillinoisy 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I’m sorry the movie was such a dud, but thank you for sharing. I’m excited to learn about an author I’ve never read and a region I know very little about. Thanks for sparking my curiosity!

[–]CousinMrrgeBestMrrge 6 points7 points  (1 child)

French here, but I've read several of Aitmatov's books and they're full of love and longing for that region. The Place of the Skull, The White Ship and The Day Lasts More than a Hundred Years were especially poignant.

[–]abu_doubleu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! The author would likely have been against this! His works are great and I recommend all to read them.

[–]CuriouserCat2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lisaaaa! You’re tearing me apart!!

[–]smaktacular 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I hope this isn't disrespectful... How do you pronounce your country?

[–]aimless_meteor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kerg- iz - stan

[–]Direct_Cartoonist309 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That honestly sounds more frustrating than entertaining, especially for someone who admires the author. A story that meaningful deserved far more care than that.

[–]GozerDGozerian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had to deal with that.

This is how I feel on a much smaller scale with about 1/3 of YouTube’s content nowadays.

I really wish they’d make a “no AI” option.

[–]cerpintaxt33 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I want to see this now

[–]adultkarate 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It’s definitely a great example of uncanny valley https://youtu.be/fKUOb6R1_kQ?is=aU_QgnYtvxXZWh64

[–]wafflesareforever 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Come on. No way did anyone buy this as real.

[–]Big-Alternative-4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The description outright says its AI

[–]Optimal-Bag-5918 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That is awful!

[–]CuriouserCat2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spectacularly bad

[–]ILikeMyouiMina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the movie but I know who Chingiz Aitmatov is because my high school teacher made me research Kyrgyzstan after it landed on a wheel LOL this unlocked some memories

[–]BennyBNut 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Are English translations of Aitmatov's works worth reading? Is there a book that's best as a first read?

[–]abu_doubleu 2 points3 points  (1 child)

All of his works are worth reading, the two most famous, and simultaneously most worth reading in my opinion, are The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years and Jamilia!

[–]BennyBNut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I saw your comment. Pushing him to the top of my list.

[–]Trumpisaderelict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I really need to see this thing. I hope it’s streaming

[–]dirkdigglerdonedry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very nice
