Not me, but my grandma and her friend.

They went to the theater without a plan on what to watch, looked at the synopsis of the movies that were playing and saw a movie about a boy and his teddy bear, and them growing up together. They thought it sounded like a feel good movie and purchased tickets.

That movie was Ted

[–]Round-Pizza-8977 1261 points1262 points  (33 children)

My great aunt walked out of The 40 year old virgin and demanded her money back. I guess she thought it would be a wholesome movie

[–]wafflesareforever 540 points541 points  (8 children)

Like a Hollywood movie with the word "virgin" in the title wouldn't be primarily about sex?

[–]KookaburraNick 302 points303 points  (5 children)

Perhaps she thought it was about a very virtuous woman.

[–]Butterscotch1664 228 points229 points  (3 children)

Gladys: "Let's go see The 40 Year Old Virgin, Mary."

Mary: "Praise the Lord!"

[–]wafflesareforever 9 points10 points  (1 child)

"My boobs DO feel like bags of sand!"

[–]YukariYakum0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating… and it gets everywhere

[–]fiveeasypieces5EZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did she do it?

[–]Dachuiri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Steve Carrell, famous for being a woman

[–]The-Real-Kyuubey[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In her defense, it was released during the late 2000s, when every raunchy comedy had a PG-13 theatrical version and an unrated DVD version.

[–]MyCatLaughsAtMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say, considering what's been going on in hollywood these last 50 years, we're damned lucky it wasn't a nightmare on that screen.

[–]Enough_Regular6862 83 points84 points  (1 child)

But, it was a wholesome movie when taken as a whole. 🤷‍♂️

[–]Awkward_Rule_5509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything I know about Pink Eye I learned in this movie

[–]aznhoopster 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Hahaha this reminds me of when my conservative dad and his new wife (divorced from my mom) took her very young kids at the time to the first Deadpool movie cause I think at one point it was jokingly advertised as a Valentine’s Day movie or something. They left around the part where he was getting pegged lmao

[–]TrueSkonger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You DON'T want your young kids to watch Ryan Reynolds get pegged? What is this world even coming to smh

[–]Krivici 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s not wholesome about “She was Hurtin for a squirtin?”

[–]SquirrelLuvsChipmunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean.. it kind of is a wholesome movie.. but maybe not by great aunt’s standards lol

[–]Phineas_Worrell 362 points363 points  (12 children)

My parents had a friend that won 6 tickets through a radio contest to see this new documentary. They invited me and my 80+ grandmother. I tried to explain their mistake and then tried to convince my grandmother this documentary was NOT for her. She told me, "i watch soap operas, there's not much i haven't seen."

I have to give her credit, she never asked to leave, but she did tell me the best part was that the theater was dark so peele couldn't see her.

The movie was Borat.

[–]CyUNexTue 171 points172 points  (5 children)

Why would Jordan Peele care if your grandma watched Borat?

[–]Graysylum 106 points107 points  (3 children)

He might tell her to Get Out.

[–]TheMistbornIdentity 42 points43 points  (2 children)

Nope.

[–]IXrobocopXI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, peele, the South Asian mythological creature that inhabits movie theaters and can only take you to the underworld if it can see you (it has bad night vision.)

[–]thatsnotyourtaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought this story was leading up to the aristocrats

[–]IwantaVespa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should make it up to her and take her to Bruno.

[–]pleasedtoheatyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it really funny/cute that the most wild and culturally risque thing she could think of is soap operas. A genre literally designed to give bored housewives a sense of excitement.

[–]brianwho420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to see Borat with a group of like 6 friends. We were all extremely high on some great pot cookies. I was the only one in the group who was not Jewish. I was trying not to just lose my shit during the running of the Jew eggs I couldn’t breath. Finally one of my friends leans over to me and says it’s ok to laugh. I feel out of my seat.

[–]New_Safe_2097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like!

[–]thirstl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad also walked out of Borat lol

[–]DarthTJ 279 points280 points  (31 children)

I watched South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut in the theater when it came out. The parade of families marching out of the theater when Uncle Fucker started was almost as funny as the movie itself. I guess parents saw cartoon and assumed it was a kids movie.

[–]stiletto929 124 points125 points  (11 children)

Yeah, I heard a lot of parents took their kids to see Deadpool. Kids like superhero movies, right?!?

[–]meanmom7791 66 points67 points  (0 children)

My dad happily wore a Deadpool t-shirt for several weeks (it was on clearance!) until a kid said, “I like your Deadpool shirt!” He thought it was Spider-Man.

[–]moral_agent_ 10 points11 points  (5 children)

I went to see the movie "Forbidden Fruits" when it came out, knowing nothing about it, and a couple sat in the same row as me with their 8 year old daughter. They sat through the majority of it, even the the crazy sex scene in the middle of it.

But as soon as there was some violence going on they snatched their daughter and walked right out. I guess some people draw their lines at different points

[–]Russellonfire 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Honestly, as silly as it sounds, I think being fine with sex but not wanting your kids to see violence is way more sensible than the other way around.

[–]FogottenThunderer -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

What??? Absolutely not.

[–]Russellonfire 3 points4 points  (2 children)

So you'd rather when kids grow up into adults they're more familiar with violence than sex? Weirdo.

[–]meli_sybil [score hidden]  (0 children)

Forget Tom and Jerry. Apparently we're skipping straight to Fritz the Cat

[–]Grizzly_Berry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dradpool was a superhero movie, so it should be for kids!

Sausage Party was animater, so it should be for kids!

We had printed warnings up and told people. We refused refunds.

[–]Bullwinkle932000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My kids' school (ages 5-10) sent out a flyer during COVID with Deadpool doing a bunch of stretches and stuff, trying to encourage movement since they couldn't do PE anymore. All in all, it was pretty tame and okay, but as a parent I still question choosing Deadpool out of all the superheroes available.

[–]DroneOfDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Mexico, all of the Deadpool movies, Logan and Sausage Party were rated C (equivalent to an NC-17 in the US except for not having the stigma around it and the age is 18) and they had to put signs at the box office of movie theaters explaining to parents that the movie is adults only and they can't sell them tickets for their kids. I assume other "looks a bit like a kids movie but it's for adults" movies (i.e. The Batman, The Suicide Squad, Unicorn Wars) got the same treatment.

[–]Gold-Case-9798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My xh took our daughter to Deadpool 3 for her 11th birthday. I was horrified.

The kiddo was not.😂

[–]Sharpei_are_Life 69 points70 points  (0 children)

My mother _hates_ swearing and won't watch anything with bad language. And yet, her two favorite movies are Blazing Saddles and South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (for the Uncle Fucker song).

[–]smartbeaver 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Wasn't South Park rated R? I member me and 12 year old cousin buying tickets for Wild Wild West and walking out to sneak into South Park.

[–]DarthTJ 13 points14 points  (2 children)

It is, but adults can buy tickets for kids to rated R movies and I guess the parents didn't pay attention to the rating and the person selling the tickets didn't bother to say "are you sure? It's rated R and has a metric fuckton of profanity"

[–]katarinasunrise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to think the person selling the tickets probably knew exactly what they were doing. They were stirring the pot so they could enjoy watching the drama unfold later. One of my good friends in high school worked at our local theater, and sometimes when he was bored or upset with his manager, he’d pull some shit like that.

[–]OU7C4ST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will warp their fragile lil minds

[–]Franholio_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not just R, but set the record at the time for most F-bombs in a single film. My uncle snuck me into the theater to see it when I was 8 years old, and promptly snuck me back out after a minute haha.

[–]kuzinrob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this exact thing, as WWW was the only movie I've walked out of. However, the theater was keen to the idea, so we couldn't get in to South Park, and tried to get refunds on our tickets instead.

[–]Own_Narwhal_7480 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing that and spent most of the movie struggling to breathe due to hysterical laughter.

[–]Mitch_Wallberg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was literally a warning before the theatrical release of the Amazing Digital Circus finale that said “yes this is animated, no it is not a kids movie” and at least two families completely ignored it and ended up leaving about 20 minutes in

[–]OneStepForAnimals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the times I have laughed the most in my entire life.

[–]-Aluminum_Falcon- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine saw Bad Santa in the theater with the same result lol.

[–]CoffeeOrDestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

😂

[–]Lanky-Perspective995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We saw families running out of the theatre when it got to that part.

[–]Kyral210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Americans are crazy.

Here in the UK, with age ratings, you cannot take kids into non age appropriate films (15, 18). Anyone CAN see a 12 when accompanied by an adult over 18. U and PG are guidelines which are useful to follow.

[–]wilderlowerwolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may have let their kids watch the TV show, and didn't realize that the movie might be a little, shall we say, uncensored.

[–]kimboskerov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MOTHER took me to see that movie and sat through it with me when I was like… 11. Shockingly, we stayed through the entire movie! She just sat in horrified silence and when we left, we never talked about it again, LOL.

[–]The_Onion_Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut in the theater when it came out. The parade of families marching out of the theater when Uncle Fucker started was almost as funny as the movie itself. I guess parents saw cartoon and assumed it was a kids movie.

I saw Return to Oz when it was released in theaters. It was erroneously heavily promoted as a family-friendly sequel to the beloved original film.

I watched/heard so many screaming/crying children being carried out of the theater that day.

[–]Independent_Boss_745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine the confusion in that theater. A lot of parents probably went in expecting something like a normal animated movie and got a very different experience.

[–]Gold-Case-9798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s wild.😂

I was 18 when that movie came out. I was carded buying the ticket and I was carded again before I walked into the theatre.

[–]Expert-Effect-877 209 points210 points  (3 children)

But it was a feel-good movie. I mean, I felt good watching Marky Mark get the living shit beaten out of him by a stuffed animal!

[–]Famous-Reaction7289 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hate how hard that scene made me laugh. It was so ridiculous that there was no choice but to commit to the chaos.

[–]AggravatingCupcake0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it was feel-good! My husband and I still call each other "thunder buddy" when there is a thunderstorm outside ☺️

[–]Zaku99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im convinced Ted was only able to do any damage at all because he was soaked in rain water.

[–]Plastic_Text7452 214 points215 points  (3 children)

On a similar thread, my Nana and her friend went to see Blades of Glory thinking it would be a sweet movie about ice skating. Nana was pissed that our young humor could be so sick!

[–]mattress_117 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It gets the people going!

[–]GozerDGozerian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that Napoleon Dynamite sequel where Pam from The Office got all sexy. :)

[–]ElleM848645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sisters and I saw Black Swan one Christmas Eve. There were a lot of older people that walked out half way through. We laughed and said they thought it was a wholesome movies about ballet.

[–]Additional_Fig1315 106 points107 points  (5 children)

One we went to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall. There was an old couple there too and I was a little surprised. They did not last 5 minutes before leaving since the opening scene was loud and bouncy sex. During the same time period there was a movie called We Are Marshall about a university football team tragedy. I think that is what they thought they were going to see 😂

[–]Oi_Nander 41 points42 points  (3 children)

My mom took me to see ghost instead of ghost dad in a similar mix-up

[–]KaiserBear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the plus side; you did not have to watch Ghost Dad.

[–]BrushStorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ghost had less rape

[–]kaaz54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That movie also hurt the pottery community.

I have one and only one rule in this class: I will tolerate no reenacting, whether it's ironic or sincere, of the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore scene in Ghost. Ever since that movie was released in 1990, I have seen ... every ... conceivable ... variation of what I call 'Ghosting'. Whether it's guy-on-girl, girl-on-guy, the HILARIOUS guy-on-guy!

So since it never stopped, I have to adopt a "zero Ghost tolerance policy".

If you so much as hum three notes from that Righteous Brothers song, so help me God I will come at you! With everything I've got. OK? Let's have a great time!

[–]BrushStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof

[–]WaxiestBobcat 60 points61 points  (3 children)

I remember seeing the previews for Wolf of Wall Street but didn't know how much cussing it would have and stuff. Ended up taking my grandma with the rest of the family to see it. She was absolutely appalled.

[–]vaisatriani 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I saw some walkouts within the first few minutes. Leo blowing cocaine into that hooker's asshole was all they needed to see.

[–]moal09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, that was sort of the point of the movie

[–]onlyhereforthehugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That movie held the record of most "fucks" in a feature film at 569 uses - 3.16 per minute over 180 minutes.

[–]charden_sama 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My grandma did this with Talladega Nights!

[–]theolerazzlezazzle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This exact situation happened to me at the theater I worked at at the time. A middle aged woman and an older woman came to the desk and were furious about how raunchy the movie was and wanted their money back

[–]Axxisol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My parents did that for Deadpool 😂

[–]timberrrrrrrr 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I saw this exact thing happen at Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Like four elderly people got up 10 minutes in and walked out, they obviously just looked at the poster and thought “that looks like good fun!”

[–]Admirable_Pop_7292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I’ve never seen a movie break the 4th wall to insult people watching it the way that movie did.

[–]stiletto929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked out at the donkey scene. No, just no! Or was that the Clerks sequel? It was bad, anyway.

[–]JPGenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you mean, Ted, one of The Guardian’s top 100 movies of the 21st century?

[–]galactica216 4 points5 points  (2 children)

My elderly Mom and Dad do this. Just go to the theater and pick the next movie showing and watch it. That is how they ended up watching This is the End.

[–]604TheCanadian604 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And what did they think of it ?

[–]galactica216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once we found out they went we laughed so hard. Eventually my mom said they cussed a lot

[–]Canis_Familiaris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your grandmother has no sense of humor.

[–]toreadorable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My prim and proper grandmother took my brother to see Blazing Saddles thinking it was a western and I have been laughing about it for decades.

[–]LadyCordeliaStuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a pastors kid and my mom and I like the Viking stuff. God have mercy on my soul, I almost took her to see The Northman

[–]DeusVultSaracen 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Isn't it weird that it's so common for old folks, women especially, to have the same sensibilities in media as, like, literal children? Is that just a thing that's gonna happen to most of us as we grow old, or what?

[–]Oxcidious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's more so a product of the times they grew up in

[–]mstarrbrannigan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather went to see Borat because he heard how funny it was. I don’t know if he walked out or not but I know he didn’t like it at all.

[–]EmbarrassedCost1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody said staaabucks!

[–]Ok_Ladders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best comment

[–]ImplementDowntown748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only imagine the shock when they realized Ted wasn't the wholesome teddy bear story they expected. That plot twist happened before the movie even got going.

[–]syaxklerkvoat111 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Imagine expecting Paddington and getting a foul-mouthed bear hitting a bong.

[–]604TheCanadian604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, she is english, so that might have been what they expected

[–]microsoft_paint98 1 point2 points  (1 child)

wait this exact same thing happened to my grandma?? that's so funny I remember she demanded a refund

[–]604TheCanadian604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember what my grandma did. When she finished telling the story, my sister's and I just cracked up laughing.

It's still a great joke we bring up all the time. I took a screenshot of my original comment and she got a kick out of it

[–]Good_Professional511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably in the minority on that one, but at least you knew early it wasn't your kind of movie.

[–]TylersColon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandmother did the exact same thing. I wonder how common this was.

[–]manderifffic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandparents walked out of Good Will Hunting or, as they called it, "The movie about the boy with autism." They were appalled by all the swearing and demanded their money back.

[–]phantomoftheflop [score hidden]  (0 children)

my great aunt went for a “girls night” with her friends to go see Emerald Fennels ‘Wuthering Heights,’ cause they all loved the book

[–]greekmom2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha

[–]GreedyLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did they not have fun watching it?

[–]pea_I_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super weird and completely for differnt reasons but the only movie I ever walked out of was Ted.

[–]Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on guardians best 200 movies of all time released today

[–]Black_Butterfly808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your grandma and her thunderbuddy?

[–]ST100FromScratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was gonna be Ted

[–]Comfortable-Win-3288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂😂😂 that’s a great story

[–]Realistic-Beach9339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only imagine the moment they realized that was definitely not the movie they expected. That's a story I'd never get tired of hearing.

[–]ImprovementFar5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing "South Park Bigger, Longer, Uncut" in the theater and as soon as "Uncle Fucker" started, there was a steady stream of parents with little kids leaving.

Yeah, it's a cartoon. That no longer means it's for children.

[–]silvertonguedmute 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My sister-in-law brought her two girls to see the new animated movie everyone was saying was so funny. Her daughters was 10 and 13 if I remember correct. They went to see Sausage Party.

[–]intelligentx5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ted was fucking awesome lol

[–]Bassist57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s on them, Ted 1&2 and the show are hilarious!

[–]fucuntwat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Somehow my very religious grandparents thought raiders of the lost Ark was some sort of documentary about searching for the actual artifact, not an adventure fantasy movie. They did not stay much past the intro
