Luke hiding on Tatooine with the surname Skywalker was crazy. HOW was he never found out by the Empire?

[–]RodinKnox 32 points33 points  (9 children)

It makes zero sense with Obi-Wan's explanation that his father one day wanted Luke to have his lightsaber. But it sort of makes sense with the Prequels when we see that Anakin never learned his kids lived. He wouldn't know to search for anyone.

[–]Foxhound199 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I never took that line literally. The man who was Anakin would have wanted to see his son follow the path of a jedi, but Darth Vader did not know about his son. So what he said was true...from a certain point of view.

[–]RodinKnox [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, we definitely know that Anakin = Darth Vader wasn't thought up until after A New Hope.

[–]AdamAtomAnt [score hidden]  (1 child)

I took that as Obi Wan doing what he thought Anakin would have wanted. As far as Obi Wan was concerned, Anakin was no longer Anakin the moment Anakin started killing Jedi.

I don't disagree with that at all.

[–]bad_apiarist 7 points8 points  (2 children)

But Palpatine knew they lived and were a threat- and he wasn't a dude that treated threats lightly.

[–]RodinKnox 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Did he? I haven't seen those movies in a while, but I thought he just heard she died (which would have been news), and he lied to Vader that Vader killed her, rather than telling him she died in childbirth. It's certainly conceivable that everyone present when her kids were born lied about them being born, because they were planning on hiding them.

It's not really clear in Revenge of the Sith. But that's sort of my point. Later shows try to retcon that they successfully hid it from him. Yeah I'm not buying that. Palpatine rose to power by sheer cleverness and sneakiness, manipulating people and always knowing what is going on. So we're supposed to think Palps see's the news feed, "Padme dead" and says to himself, "welp. Good enough for me. Definitely bears no investigation using my spy network whatsoever. Nope."

Or that we're supposed to think Yoda & co, Yoda being "I'm captain moron who has no idea what is happening even inside the head of the person I am looking at in the room (Anakin) are suddenly so incredibly adept and capable that they can thwart Palpatine's efforts. Ya maybe if we didn't just sit through 3 movies where the heroes are hapless imbeciles.

The actual explanation is that Darth Vader and Anakin were two completely different people until episode V was written and that twist was not planned from the start.

[–]justdrowsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obi-Wan Kenobi? Oh you must mean Obi-Wan Kenobi.

[–]nutano 17 points18 points  (2 children)

The sand kept Anakin away.

[–]Alternative-Being181 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Exactly, it's coarse and rough and irritating.

And it gets EVERYWHERE.

[–]bmack24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bc everything in Star Wars was made up as they went along. Nobody knew Darth Vader was Luke’s father when they were making the first one, not even George Lucas

[–]avimo1904 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Lucas said Skywalker was a common name.

[–]bad_apiarist 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Yeah but on Tattoine? WITH his actual living family members? That's just stupid no matter how you look at it.

[–]Unlikely-Tone-6269 13 points14 points  (3 children)

but also, why would a Wookiee, an 8 foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor with a bunch of 2-foot tall Ewoks? That doesn’t make sense!

[–]CarpeMofo 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Maybe he likes the access to portable fuck holes whenever he wants.

He wanted to live on Endor's moon?

[–]coldfarm 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Why would the Empire be looking for a Skywalker? Besides the Emperor, who else in the Empire knew that Vader was Anakin Skywalker?

Also, Vader himself thought Padme died before giving birth. He didn’t know he had a son.

[–]Bostonterrierpug 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Well, it was in a book and might not be considered cannon by some, but when he met Darth Maury. He found out he was the father.

I remember that episode. Feel like that’s when the show really jumped the shark.

[–]AshtonKoocher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dan Smith, the most powerful accountant of all time, who would have passed his accounting genes along to his kids if his wife had survived a freak bathtub fall and choked on the shower curtain. Alas she died, the only unborn child died. Why would our government look for his kids to save the US from its debt?

[–]Dangerous-Guitar-945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tatooine is like… one of the most desolate places in a galaxy, in Star Wars lore.. whatever government governed the galaxy never really gaf about the outer rim… where Tatooine was AND the empire had far more pressing things to attend to

[–]MelbaToast604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is non-movie backstory where Darth Vader is just too devastated to return there, and tatooine is so far removed for him to ever hear the name Skywalker. But yes in the movies it doesnt make much sense

[–]couldathrowaway [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nobody knew he existed, and tatooine is outside control of the empire. Epstein could be hiding in tijuana mexico, and the us would never find him.

[–]Mumbert [score hidden]  (0 children)

Same with Obi-wan Kenobi "hiding" without even changing his surname, on the same planet and even in the same area as Luke. It's pretty damn stupid. 😂
