I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

I've seen it and love it conceptually (I use Macs at home and my director doesn't let me touch the PCs at work in this sort of way)! I mostly work with very novice users who need the closest thing to a checklist there is. I added a link to this.
I keep seeing things on GitHub I want to do with my computer but I don't know how to use GitHub.
I only sort of know but in a lot of cases it's either just downloading a thing and following steps (i.e. scroll down on the project page to see the README) or doing fancy script stuff and then I usually say "hmm probably not for me, then"
Sometimes there's a release page, with the latest compiled version to download and install. But it's up to the developers to do it
This is great! We have been thinking about doing an event at my library where we set up a checklist on the projector and have folks on hand to help people turn off the AI on all of their devices. Super useful information, thank you!
That sounds like it would be a great program.
So much of this is really about consent.
If you didn't vote Dem, you helped make this:

The Republican platform is not-so-secretly legal rape and legal slavery. Everything they do inches America closer to these end goals.
This is great, thank you. Also, that Zoom AI transcription thing is annoying. No matter how many times I disable it, they turn it back on with their (frequent) updates.
Check the account settings on Zoom's website, not the toggle in the desktop app. Updates reset local preferences, but the web one is what the client reads when you sign in.
That’s where I do it, every time. It always comes back.
Thank you. As someone who uses AI by choice in certain aspects of my life I would also like to not have it pop up like MEGA-Clippy at every and all moments. It is a plague. And it doesn't have to be.
Exactly my feeling. I don't use it that often but I know I can go use it if I want to but I'd like it to be my choice.
Jessamyn, you star, this is so helpful!
This is so great. Thank you.
AI stuff should be opt in not forced until opt out
the google one annoys me most, because it removes some of the best features that Google had before they added AI.
Ugh, yes. I now have to sort through my inbox every day to clear out the promotional emails because Gmail won’t separate them into tabs for me anymore. 👎🏻
retired public librarian here. you are a stellar human for putting this together! i will share it with my less technical friends. thank you so much 😊
Thank you *so much*. I just adjusted all of the settings, and I no longer have to scroll down on Google to find the actual links. This is great public service, and I appreciate it!
I like how AI is so inevitable and game changing they have to keep forcing it on us at very single juncture possible
Thank you so much! What a beautiful resource!!
came here to say this! just used it! will definitely pass it along to people not on Bluesky, also.
I really want to make this into a paper zine & leave copies around everywhere! ❤️
Please do, it's CC-licensed.
Ahh you are the best :-) :-) thank you!
Thank you - I learned some tricks for Zoom that I needed.
*THANK YOU* I knew several of these, but not all. I just went and turned off all the annoying AI 'features' of zoom following your helpful site. ♥️
Bring back the card catalog. Put a half dozen boomers in the room with a half dozen AI "developers"... whoever can find three actual periodical references to Tom Sawyer gets to live.
thank you so much! I feel like I spend half my time on websites now trying to avoid having ai shoved down my throat
thanks for creating this - will put to use! and back at you, if of interest/use...

In case anyone needs it for their syllabi, my statement in gen-Ai from the minicomic I made as a syllabus for class last semester. All online and printable here spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-sy...
I followed this guide to de-ai my google and suddenly I had over 10,000 emails drop into my inbox lol
Great write-up. The fight against these write-ups is ongoing :-( The location for the AI writing assistance in WhatsApp has been moved to a slightly deeper level in the Settings - at least on my android phone :-( It's now: Settings - Chat - Private Processing - Private Processing Features
Some heroes don’t wear capes… or maybe you do, how should I know?!
Terrific! Succinct, clear and shareable with people who have limited familiarity with tech. Thank you.
Thanks for this—i had started a similar project but got so busy I fell way behind. I can't wait to share this with my community
Thank you. Not a fan of ai.
This is awesome, thank you!
Thank you! Just forwarded this to my work email!
Thanks for performing this valuable service!
Bless you! This is so appreciated.
Thank you for making this!
Thank you! It's great to have this compilation for the next round of computer updates when AI gets turned back on.
This is true of digital marketing too. If you try to create ads on Meta or Google now, both platforms insistently auto-generate AI variations and enhancements to your campaign that are difficult to reject or disable. And these AI variations, while usually helpful, sometimes contain cringy errors.
Thank you! I had already done the flags/AI one, but the Gemini hint was super helpful!
Yay was looking for something like this for my computer at work. Thank you!
“putting the rarin back in librarian since 1999” ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! I cannot tell you how happy this makes me!!
Doing, as they say, the Lord's work over here. Thank you for resisting the slop. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, I am slowly turning it off where I have been susceptible.
Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you. Librarians are the best.
Thanks for putting this together!
This is amazing, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is so awesome, thank you so much for putting this together!
please add the guide of how to turn off Apple Intelligence in iOS 27: Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, then enable them, then go to the category that says "Siri", and disallow everything. It's the only way unfortunately...
Also, for changing your search engine to noai.duckduckgo on iOS, you have to install the extension "Custom Search Engine"
I'm somewhat dyslexic, and I read the bag to say, "NON-FUNCTIONAL. DISTRACTION. PANIC MASK." Which is kinda fun.
Be advised that "Apple Intelligence & Siri" is per app so you have to go into each one, sadly. I was hoping for a UI shortcut -- a multi-select then disable thingy -- because "Apple," but oddly, this is lacking.
I want desperately to remove ai from my Google Pixel 10. Looking for solutions to that end.
One extra suggestion for Android: if you search for "assistant" in the settings, there's a dozen settings pertaining to accessing AI too. You can set an alternative to Gemini there (I set my browser) and disable stuff like swiping from a corner to activate the assistant, etc.
Thank you for this! Looking forward to seeing more - especially how to kill Adobe’s intensely annoying Ai - “This looks like a long document - do you want me to summarize your PDF?” when it’s a receipt!😒
On a Google Pixel phone it's really hard to remove ai related stuff, but you can turn off Gemini (search settings for Gemini and make sure they're off).
In the home-screen google search, you can remove the "ai search" button by changing it to something else (press & hold the search bar, select "Widget settings" then select a different option - like Translate)
I have not yet found a way to turn off "AI Overview" in Chrome or Firefox on Android, but you can change your search engine to duckduckgo to avoid AI summaries
FWIW Apple also enables “learning” for every app, and it has to be turned off individually. Pages on Mac was using over 40% of the CPU, turned off learning and it dropped to 2%
You can't opt out of AI without deleting all Meta, Alphabet/Google and Microsoft apps, and a whole lot besides (especially Xitter). AI is the ultimate "throatware" - software that is rammed down your throat whether you want it or not.
Switch from your current browser/search engine to go to Settings, and turn off AI.
we should make things the opposite as the artificial thief is a criminal destroyer.

If you have an old laptop that you no longer need, you can mail it to me and I will: * Wipe the drive completely * Install Linux with no network drivers included * Disconnect or remove the Wi-Fi * Disconnect or remove the Ethernet Guaranteed AI-free. I call it a ButlerBox. DM me for details!
Is it too far off-topic to add info/link for settings that make your “Smart” TV less AI/stalking?
It is not. If you have simple instructions you could point to for that, I'd add it.
For WhatsApp, the options you mention don't appear for me, but I do have a floating Widget that says Ask Meta AI I would love to get rid of. Any ideas?
I updated the page with another suggestion from someone else, check in Settings – Chat – Private Processing – Private Processing Features too.
Thank you for doing this and sharing 🙏
Here's the one piece of advice I give every niece and nephew heading off to college: whatever you study, get comfortable with AI. It's touching every field, and the students who understand it — and track how their industry is using it — are the ones who'll be ready for what's coming.
Never AI felt as you after shearinng a dificult propse in a ocean of pages and so many diferent books you find THAT and ¡ you're special!
