This chapter describes historical perspectives, the current status, and future directions of the counseling profession in the Philippines. It also provides information regarding counselor education, counseling practice, and diversity issues in the Philippines. Counseling in the Philippines addresses the substantial influence of social illness. The Career Development Association of the Philippines was established in 1977 with the aim of professionalizing the practice of career guidance and counseling. The Family and Pastoral Counseling Association of the Philippines helps both family and pastoral counselors to contribute to the growth of the nation. The most significant development in the field of counseling in the Philippines has been the passage of the Guidance and Counseling Act of 2004, Republic Act 9258, on March 26, 2004. This law was intended to professionalize the practice of guidance and counseling and to create the Professional Regulation Commission, Republic of the Philippines, Board of Guidance and Counseling.
