YouTube’s AI Detection Kicked Us in the Face Every creator's worst nightmare just happened to us: The YouTube algorithm actually blocked us. It started slowly at first. Some videos started showing strange view fluctuations. Our second to last video did very badly, but this just happens sometimes, so we didn’t think that much about it. But then our last video, about Superpredators, did *extremely* badly. It was our worst upload since 2013. But it did badly in a weird way: Almost every single metric was well above average: People clicked the video more often and watched it for longer, and the people who watched it, on average, loved it! So it should have been at the very least an average upload, not the worst in over a decade. So we quickly got in touch with YouTube, and they actually confirmed pretty quickly that something was going on. It turned out that YouTube’s automatic AI detection tools wrongly think that our very much human-made videos are AI Slop. So it started to choke our channel. Our contacts at YouTube were amazingly helpful and transparent with us, and hopefully the bug is fixed for now. In principle, we are all for blocking AI slop from the platform; it really seems to have been bad luck. Since we really love this video, we have taken it offline. We are updating and changing it a bit to make it worth watching a second time. We’ll reupload it in a few weeks, and hopefully this time the anti-AI tool will feel ok about it. If you have watched it before, it would help us a lot if you watch it a second time and all the way to the end for an Algorithm boost! We’ll keep you posted!

The grossest part is that the only reason YouTube’s AI thought the videos were AI slop, was because people were mass producing kurzgesagt style AI slop

YouTube responded only because it was Kurgezagt. Had it been smaller creators, they'd have been left in purgatory.

YouTube flagging "AI slop" while promoting actual AI slop is comical...

YouTube’s AI never fails at sucking😃

The most surprising part of this story is that you actually got to talk to a human at YouTube and had your problem resolved.

Is this why I havent seen kursgesagt videos recommended to me in a while?

That's sad... meanwhile... clearly full AI videos and whole AI generated channels are out there consuming resources and people's time, and spreading dangerous lies...

Google massively promotes its own AI, so I wouldn't count on YT really doing anything meaningful in that direction.

And Actual AI slop is everywhere 😔

AI falsely detecting AI is such a 2026 thing.

I’ll make sure to watch it once it comes back online! You guys are great!

YouTube is very good at leaving AI slop to stay and trying to kill non-AI slop.
267
There are tons of AI content that YouTube's AI detection thinks is the most realistic thing it has ever seen
27
And actual ai slop doesn’t receive the same treatment. It is rewarded by the algorithm.
12
Objective: Detect AI slop and block it Outcome: Blocks everything other than AI slop.

After reading Immune, I feel like YouTube's algorithm filter thing is like IgE antibodies: they attack harmless substances that they think are parasites, causing a massive disturbance; and also somehow miss the actual parasite like half of the time

It's hard to believe YT is blocking any AI slop at all.
18
Ah, yes. YT using AI to block AI. It's like fighting fire with fire.
87
That makes so much sense of why I haven't seen ANY videos from y'all recently 😭 no shorts, no videos, you were just gone.
17
The irony of youtube to do this and still show hundreds of AI ads basically on every single video.
5
How could anyone ever say no to a rewatch!
25
When AI clones your style so hard that detection thinks originals are generated.
4
Omg,thats so unfortunate wish you luck on your next video👾

is it weird i read this entire post in the kurgezagt narrators voice?

I absolutely think this happened because the slop was trained on your style of video and animation because it's popular. So in turn YouTube's slop detector was trained on those videos, and incorrectly identified the original source of that style as slop. The video didn't get served to me. I can't say there's ever been a video by this channel that I haven't liked. So yeah, it definitely had a negative impact. I also find this aggravating because they still don't have a way of reporting AI slop or even flat out stolen content. "Spam or misleading" kind of works, but not quite.

While YouTube has been responsive and understanding towards your channel (one of the biggest out there), I have heard dozens of horror stories of people I have subscribed to wrongfully getting demonitized permanently because of YouTubes AI "content detection" being inaccurate. Many are unable to actually get in contact with real people after appeal and just get hit with automated responses before the channel dies from YouTube being complicit in their mistakes. Currently, I'm think about the channel "Heralen", but I've seen this many times before. Please take a moment to consider if you're able to help the greater YouTube community after being hit with a similar situation yourself.

We love when we have AI detecting AI.

It's actually nice to know that they are at least trying to fight the AI channels, but obviously it sucks when they get it wrong.

Yt : there can't be any way problems with fully automating ai detection right? Users :AWW HELLL NOOO
21
lets be so real. half the actual AI slop isnt being removed
3
When you're so successful that AI starts copying your format and you end up being flagged as AI because of it

Sh!tty AI used to quash sh!tty AI. Great world this has become.

It’s not even just the ai. It’s the sheer over reliance on it to get out of paying for human review.

Hey, I think the same thing might be happening to me. Sadly the space genre is legitimately plagued by ai slop... Curious to know how you guys were able to get in touch with YouTube, I'm just a normal guy trying to pull through. Big fan btw ;)

Wow I am an avid viewer who has probably watched most videos that have come out over the last 5 years the day they were uploaded, and I never saw this video in my recommended, or anywhere (I get too many notifications so I would never see it there). It's good that youtube was responsive, but it sucks that hours of hard work from real people would be hit by AI detection. Keep up the good work :)
Yay you're back! And now I see you never left, the algorithm didn't show me your videos even though I have the 🔔 set.
So... let me get this straight... YouTube is employing AI... to combat AI videos... This is some lethal-grade irony here.

Very good that you were able to resolve, but imagine what other creators with less publicity might have to go through.
