I recently installed Linux Mint XCFE and struggle to get the graphics driver working.

Symptoms:
- only boots in recovery mode
- cannot change display brightness (in recovery mode)
- external monitor connected via HDMI is not recognized (in recovery mode)

your graphics driver is indeed not properly loaded, because under Graphics it says driver: N/A and renderer: llvmpipe. Can't help much with Intel graphics, but did you check this threat?

Please explain what that sentence means. There is a difference between a computer booting with no graphics and a computer not booting at all. What exactly is happening?

Note that you will never have Intel graphics loaded when booting in Recovery mode because the nomodeset kernel parameter is used which prevents the driver from loading.

Have you tried booting the laptop without the external monitor attached to see if you get graphics?

Did you do a fresh install of Mint 22 or was it an in-place upgrade from LM21.3?

Please launch Driver Manager and check if it does recommend a driver

OP has Intel graphics. There are no proprietary graphics drivers for Intel so there will not be anything in Driver Manager.

No, the second set is 'deb-src' instead of 'deb'. Most users don't need deb-src, but it is useful if you want to build/modify packages.

I installed Linux Mint 22 fresh from a USB.

I can't boot in 'normal' mode, as boot gets stuck on the Asus logo forever.
I can boot in recovery mode, but then the graphic drivers are not loaded

I don't know what specifically happens after that. I searched on these lines and found Ubuntu 23.10 live usb not booting on acer aspire a515-48m laptop amd cpu uefi shell. In that case it seems to be an updated BIOS/UEFI was needed.

If this is the correct link, it appears your system is missing quite a few BIOS updates (missing almost all of them and they all indicate they "optimize system performance").

ASUS offers EZ Flash so you can update without having to have Windows installed.

Unluckily, the trackpad no longer works since the BIOS update.

Is there a setting in the BIOS for the trackpad? Maybe a default setting was changed when you ran the update? I'm not familiar with the laptop to know if there might be function keys or buttons on the trackpad which might enable or disable it.

I presume you checked in the Touchpad settings in Xfce to verify it is showing as enabled.
