I am aware that this claim exists among fans, but that story is an unfounded urban legend.

What the creators actually mentioned was only that, "In Director Kawamori's initial concept, there were an enormous number of ideas, and it was difficult to condense them into 26-eps." There is no official record of the creators ever stating that the series was originally planned to run for 39-eps. The rumor originated when fans interpreted the comment about the difficulty of condensing the story into 26-eps and began speculating on their own. In Japan at the time, it was generally discussed as mere fan speculation, but when the story spread overseas, it gradually came to be treated as though it were an established fact.

Furthermore, the TV Tokyo Tue 6:00pm time slot in which Escaflowne aired had only broadcast either 6month, 2cour , (26-eps) series or 1-year, 4-cour (52-eps) series. In particular, for a robot anime such as Escaflowne, the main sponsor, typically a toy manufacturer(such as BANDAI, TAKARA), would aim to release merchandise during either the new school season or the Christmas sales period. Therefore, it would have been unrealistic for the production to have been planned from the outset as a 39-eps series.

At the time, anime that encouraged viewers to analyze and interpret the story were very popular in Japan. Students like me at that time would eagerly discuss our theories with friends about the episodes we had watched the day before.

One of the pioneers of this trend was Evangelion. Escaflowne, which aired around the same time, was also a series that invited analysis and interpretation. Furthermore, Escaflowne began airing in Apr 1996, immediately after Evangelion ended in Mar 1996. This timing strengthened the perception that Escaflowne was influenced by Evangelion. As a result, some people who are unaware of the background (especially overseas Evangelion fans) still regard Escaflowne as one of its followers.

However, these critics often overlook 1 important fact. The Escaflowne manga began serialization in Dec 1994, earlier than the Evangelion manga, which started in the same magazine in Feb 1995. In other words, Escaflowne could not have been a follower of Evangelion.

I think you've misunderstood several aspects of the series. I'd like to point out 2 of them.

First, this series was designed to be watched as a weekly TV broadcast. It was not intended to be binge-watched. The pacing may have felt fast when viewed all at once, but those who watched it as it originally aired generally did not find it unusual.

More importantly, many of the developments in the second half are payoffs to foreshadowing established in the first half. If those clues are overlooked, later events can seem sudden or underdeveloped. Also, in Japanese television anime, it is extremely uncommon for a series to be planned around an arbitrary episode count such as 35 episodes. Escaflowne was conceived from the beginning as a six-month, 26-episode series.

Second, this story is fundamentally about the growth of its protagonist, Hitomi. At the beginning, she is emotionally immature and displays a naive view of romance, such as falling for Allen simply because he resembles the upperclassman she admires. By the end, however, she chooses Van and decides to part with him. This decision reflects the emotional growth of both characters. Even though they must live in different worlds, they believe they can continue living strongly as long as their hearts remain connected. It is a decision made out of mutual love and care.

If you find Hitomi's early romantic feelings immature, that is exactly what the story intends. And if you understand the Japanese lyrics, you may have noticed that the opening theme song expresses Hitomi's feelings in the final episode almost exactly. In other words, the conclusion of the story was being presented from the very beginning of Episode 1.

For me, Escaflowne is one of the truly complete and accomplished works in anime.

Add: Escaflowne also has a movie, video games, and manga adaptations, each telling a slightly different version of the story. They're all good in their own way, but none of them surpass the TV series, I think.

Considering where and when it was captured, there is little doubt that this is Japanese and that it is a Japanese flag.

The Indonesian part of Borneo mentioned in the record was occupied by Japan in 1945. It was later recaptured by Allied forces following battles between Japan and Australia in May 1945.

Borneo had important oil fields, and many Japanese civilian merchant ships were requisitioned for wartime service to transport oil and other resources. In fact, records from Japan side show that many civilian vessels engaged in oil transportation in this region were sunk by Allied forces.

The description provided by the Australian War Memorial as you mentioned was likely written with this historical background in mind. The character 民("civilian") displayed in the center of the flag also supports the interpretation that it was flown by a civilian merchant ship that had been requisitioned for wartime service.
