Move over Y2K. With rapid technological advancements in artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the metaverse, a bold new fashion aesthetic is emerging. Introducing Y3K.

Short for “Year 3000,” Y3K imagines new visual expressions for the future, blending styling, design, and technology. Thanks to its unconventional, expressive personality, this aesthetic has gained significant popularity among Chinese Gen Z.

Inspired by modern technology, Y3K often integrates metallic elements, 3D printing, and streamlined designs. Shiny, reflective textures, aerodynamic shapes, and geometric or glitch-inspired patterns add to this tech-forward aesthetic, resonating deeply with a generation eager to explore new forms of self-expression and innovation.

From South Korea to China #

Korean pop culture has played a pivotal role in shaping Y3K’s rise in China. K-pop acts like Aespa, branded as an “AI girl group,” have pioneered futuristic fashion, inspiring other celebrities such as Blackpink’s Lisa and the Japanese girl group XG to adopt similar tech-inspired styles.

Korean brands have also embraced the trend. Gentle Monster, Leey, and Andaash, along with emerging beauty brands such as Risky, are producing Y3K-inspired products, solidifying its influence across fashion and beauty industries.

As K-pop idols and brands continue to influence China, the Y3K style has grown and evolved, captivating local celebrities and influencers alike. In China, it has become a popular theme for magazine covers, music festivals, and concerts. Its bold, avant-garde visual language has inspired waves of imitations by KOLs, helping it stand out and quickly capture public attention.

Niche Chinese designers have been quick to capitalize on the Y3K aesthetic. Brands like Aqua Lixun Su and Weiræn have embraced the trend, while others like Windowsen, which has long specialized in similar futuristic designs, are gaining newfound recognition.

Incho Qiao, a homegrown jewelry designer, incorporates 3D printing technology into her creations, producing dramatic pieces that challenge conventional norms. The sports-tech brand Windowsen blends tech elements like laser lighting and bold, angular cuts, evoking a sense of transcending time and space. Meanwhile, Weiræn stands out with its use of sharp linear cuts and metallic facial accessories to craft surreal, futuristic warrior-woman imagery.

As AI, VR, and the metaverse become increasingly integrated into daily life, people are boldly imagining the future and incorporating this vision into fashion, makeup, art, and design.

Artists like Lu Yang and Song Kun are playing a key role in advancing the Y3K movement. Song Kun captures surreal moments in her art, reflecting the intersection of personal experience and societal change.
