Stuff I think about or like

@animalpetcel

Hello hello! I talk about anime, manga and comics here. The Witch and the Beast by Kousuke Satake is a great manga everyone should check out at least once. I like Jason Todd so I am prone to rambling about him and the things that relate to him

re: that discussion about 'brain damage' - what is your stance on the impact of technology usage on children's development and their parents' role in (preventing?) that?

Avatar

its role in growth and learning (terminology I prefer to "development" for reasons I won't go into) is, in my view, totally individual and extremely context dependent.

and I know that's kinda frustrating as an answer but the truth is anyone who says they can take a huge complicated aspect of the human condition and an equally complicated technology and collapse their relationship to a simple cause and effect statement is...probably selling something.

computers and phones are like other technologies in your house. I mean the things you might not even think of as "technologies". knives are a technology. fire is a technology. you need them both to cook dinner. they can also kill you. ideally you don't introduce your kid to fire by tossing them a pile of matches and saying "good luck" but also ideally you do not act like they're going to be better off never encountering fire without you hovering over their shoulder.

what you probably want to do is something along the lines of "let me show you how the stove works so you can start using it to cook if you want to"

if you study a class of 12-year-olds and their relationships with fire you're going to get a huge range of results. you'll have the outdoorsy kids who can build and light a perfect campfire. the ones who are scared of the candles on their own birthday cakes. the one kinda scary kid who likes to melt their toys. the one who started learning how to weld last year and is perfectly comfortable working with a thing hotter than the surface of the sun.

and parental input is only one component of how any of those kids ended up where they are.

parents have to get comfortable with the idea of doing their best to support their kids developing healthy relationships with technology - all kinds of technologies - while also accepting that their kids are whole people who are shaped by things beyond their control and have the right to make personal decisions they don't like.

you don't get to decide if your kid takes up juggling torches at age 16, but when they're 8 and ask you how the barbeque lighter works, you do get to decide whether you treat it like a normal tool they can master or a scary death machine they should be ashamed of wanting to touch.

genuinely desktop linux will never see mass adoption until some huge mega corporation or future socialist state produces a centralised out of the box version that comes packaged with physical devices. 99% of users do not want to do research on different forks and their strengths they want a box that turns on and shows them the button for the internet

https://system76.com/

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/d/linux-laptops-desktops/

Yeah you can just buy a laptop, turn it on, pick a username+password, open firefox to browse the web, miss chrome, go to the app store, and install chrome and and steam and discord and such. No one tells you to do this because it saves you 59 dollars if you buy lenovo and 0 dollars if you buy system 76 and everyone in the linux community knows "spend 800 dollars on a computer you have to use a third party launcher to play fortnite and genshin on" is a very hard sell and we all want to save you money and make you impressed by watching a computer that windows made slow come back to life.

Also we think choice is good.

another, albeit smaller reason desktop linux won't see mass adoption is that this is how its most vocal advocates love to engage with people

The Odyssey but retold as a low-stakes modern adventure of one guy out with his girlfriend leaving the bar with his buddies to do just one (1) simple thing real quick, it'll take like 15 minutes tops, he'll be right back, but then some bullshit happens and the trip keeps getting more complicated as more bullshit keeps happening while he just tries to get back to the bar because he promised his girlfriend that he'd get back and he knows that she's still there because she told him she'd wait there.

And by the time he finally gets back it's almost 3 am and the bar is about to close while she's sitting there stone cold sober, surrounded by 5 drunk guys unsuccessfully trying to convince her to give up on waiting for him and go home with one of them instead. And the guy shows up to proceed to beat the shit out of them before explaining himself to her like hey sorry bullshit kept happening, my phone fell into a storm drain and my wallet got stolen when I was trying to find someone who'd borrow me a phone so I could call and

His girlfriend had been fending off the 5 drunk guys for most of the evening by explaining that even if she was going to ditch her boyfriend, she can't possibly leave without finishing her beer, which she is keeping perpetually full via careful sleight of hand where she's just pouring it back and forth into and out of the pitcher.

However the drunk guys are also drinking, and eventually she can't afford to buy another pitcher for the table so she can't keep up the ever-full beer glass trick. At this point she has to resort to setting up the pool trick shot that she's never seen anyone but her boyfriend pull off, and says she'll leave with whoever manages the shot first.

That buys her another hour or so and then, finally, her boyfriend makes it back. He looks like shit, hair down and just a mess, he's wearing an entirely different jacket that he got from an alley, and barely recognizable—especially to 5 guys who've been drunk for hours now. He lurks for a minute, finds out what's going on, and proceeds to pull off the trick shot first try. Throws the jacket off, fixes his hair with a hair tie his girlfriend lends him, finally looks like himself again, and THEN beats the shit out of them with the pool cue.

yuh i was there, that's how it happened

He wakes up on a remote beach in Jamaica and he only speaks/understands Brythonic and Medieval Latin. Locals assume he was a tourist who fell from a cruise ship or received a head injury and floated away from a resort. The authorities cannot match his description to any missing persons reports and his fingerprints and DNA produce no hits on INTERPOL. They suspect he may be Welsh or French because the language he speaks resembles Welsh or Breton but France and the UK both state he is not a citizen of their country. Stateless and deeply confused, he is taken in by the community near the beach where he was found, being cared for by a number of local families and doing odd jobs. He slowly learns English and adjusts to the contemporary world, uncertain if his belief that he is the legendary King Arthur was formed by whatever traumatic event caused him to end up Jamaica or if he is actually King Arthur and Prydain is in eminent peril. Mysterious letters from Morgan begin to reaffirm his belief he is King Arthur. He must choose between staying in Jamaica and continuing the happy life he has made for himself or finding a way to get back to Britain without any documentation. a-daksancient king white boy stuns locals by ordering in perfect Jamaican Patois byjoveHe gets to Britain and everyone expects him to sound like a posh noble Englishman because that is the picture Malory painted but he prefers to speak Welsh and when he has to speak English, he speaks with a thick Jamaican accent. #arthuriana245,12210,256

animalpetcelReblogged neapolitangirlprokopetzFollowBasically what I'm getting from the present "giving 100% at work" Tumblr discourse is that a lot of people have fairly narrow notions of what blue-collar versus white-collar jobs actually entail. There are in fact manual labour jobs where a significant chunk of your average work day consists of Fucking Around, and conversely, there are desk jobs where you crunch eighty-hour weeks for years on end until you suddenly drop dead from heart failure at age 32. It's absolutely true that you're more likely to end up in a No Fucking Around Allowed situation in a blue-collar occupation, but you can't tell whether or not someone is in that position based purely on whether or not they work in an office. Shit, call centre workers are white collar on paper, and the kind of fuckery a lot of call centre workers are subjected to involves genuine human rights violations.866,40510,826

If that makes sense. Like in space exploration stuff it's common to namedrop a bunch of shit we're not unpacking right now to signal the expansiveness of the universe without having to do extensive worldbuilding for like 100s of cultures you're only gonna see once. It's honestly weird that high fantasy rarely ever does this! This is the easiest ticket out of (gestures broadly) the whole "one (1) country for Africa and Asia each" thing. Depicting a male villain as sexually interested in a male hero reads as horror to the cishet male audience. Like, Venom didn't spend years and years being blatantly characterised as Spider-Man's creepy stalker ex because Marvel's writers were all closeted yaoi fans. Corporate mandates that there be one named woman in the movie. She'll be around for the action and exposition scenes. Great! We add some banter with the lead (who is of course a man), she'll try to prove her competence, he'll be clumsy and dorky but ultimately more competent than her, classic romance stuff. At the end they kiss. Add an ex! This fulfills the romance quota, but it also adds conflict; something you've learned that scripts need, the more the better. Find a skinny blonde woman, have a scene in act 1 where she's a bitchy nag at the protagonist and is dating some other dude, but then at the denouement after he's saved the world or the city or killed a bad guy she jumps into his arms and kisses him. or maybe just tells him he's alright, we're feminist now!#meta#media196369

And on my end, it means sometimes I will get out my keys and clearly jingle them as I'm walking up the steps, as my own signal to the driver that I'm good. Community is good and this is an easy way to make me feel loved.31,4001,821
animalpetcelReblogged strawberry-crocodilebeardedmrbeanFollowthey used to let kids have real funafriendofblahajThere's an xkcd for that :3Side note: polonium-210 is a very dangerous isotope, however it "does not pose a radiation hazard when kept outside the body", as the alpha particle it emits have very little penetration power and cannot pierce even the outer layers of dead skin. It has still killed countless people, though, not because of children's rings, but because of tobacco. Polonium latches onto and concentrates in tobacco leaves, leading to heavy smokers being exposed to more radiation than survivors of the Chernobyl disaster. It's always wild to me seeing comments about different toxins like this on information about random things in the past, but it's never discussed when it comes to cigarettes.mossadspydolphin9014,12721,028

Not in like a "Charles is lowkey mind controlling most of the people in his life" way (though, yknow, #truke) and more that he can make your brain just ... stop. animalpetcelReblogged strawberry-crocodilegalileosballsFollowAlso, please do not listen to how people talk about cover letters on this site. Cover letters are important, and in many industries you can be damn sure they'll be read. And no, they're not 'fanfic about working in your office', or just re-stating the resume contents in a fancier guise. If you treat them like that, then of course they're not doing much for you. That makes you sound like a syncophantic windbag, and it's not doing anything else to help.I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom. The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do. This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that. And the other mistake? Everyone writes cover letters that are too long. One page is fine. Two is the absolute maximum, and that's if you have a lot of specific things to say. It's a waste of your time and theirs to pad it out with fluff. Of my two most recent successful cover letters (i.e. jobs for which I was interviewed) one was 390 words and the other was 550. That's the length of this post. How long did it take me to write this post? About 15 minutes to write, 5 to proof and edit. That's how long you should be spending on a cover letter, maximum. #personal668,23515,024

Surely the REAL world won't be anything like this." And then I grew up and discovered that not only is the real world often exactly like that, some people won't even read the first line of the instructions even if they make perfect sense. And these people are called "co-workers"218,45936,248
