Gawa is approximately 50 km north east of Galiwinku, located on the north eastern end of Elcho Island.

Gawa is 63 kms from Galiwinku. The main languages spoken in the community are the Yolngu Matha languages Warramiri and Djambarrpuyngu. The Gawa community is located at the northern end of Elcho Island and is led by three Elders; Dr Kathy Gotha Guthadjaka AM, Mr Colin Baker and Mr James Daymangu Bukulatjpi. Gotha and Colin established the community and Gawa Homeland Learning Centre in the mid 1980's and through the 1990's with Jacky Gurrudupunbuy, Sylvia Bulutjangaother and 46 Gawa children. The community progressed to include the Gawa Christian School in 2003. The school typically has 60-70 children enrolled each year. The Elders and community leaders continue to work collaboratively to develop the community with the launch of the Gurruthay Wellness Rangers in 2024.
