  1. Reminder to everyone that this sub is for studying flags. That includes flags for disputed things, but I would hope everyone here is capable of sticking to talk about the flag and how it is used, not side-tracking in to arguing the dispute itself.

  2. On that note, OP, we normally expect a post here to have a bit more to say about the flag, whether that's about its history, design, symbolism, current use patterns, whatever - something more than "this is the flag of the Falkland Islands as administered by the UK". I'm leaving the post up because u/legerity has started a good thread on, but if you post again, please put some more effort into it.

I always find it super interesting how someone on wikipedia designed all these vectorized flags which then kind of informally became treated as official because printers ripped that design to print royalty free. If you go back to pre-wikipedia era they all look something like the above image.

It is fascinating, and yet nobody ever seems to talk about it. The UK has used the wikipedia version of the British Coat of Arms in an official capacity on multiple occasions.

There are several other examples of this sort of thing as well.

The coat of arms you see on the Falkland Islands Wikipedia page for example is not an official version. It’s just one that a wiki contributor made because it’s royalty free. But because of that people who are looking to make flags etc just use that version because they know there won’t be any legal issues with copyright, etc.

It's amazing the amount of flag historical revisionism is just built around Wiki Commons flags or more funnily Hearts of Iron 4 modding flags that just end up in official contexts

This is why printed flags aren't real flags. Real flags are sewn out of fabric, like they always have been.

I think the main factor is that wikipedia's vectorized flags / CoA have by default a better image quality than anything else you can find on the internet.

Perhaps the government website has a nicer design but it will look crappy if you use it for anything because it's almost certainly a 150px wide .jpg

I got to visit as part of my job, so very easy for me personally, or as easy as an 18 hour long haul flight from the UK to the Falklands stopping at Ascension can be. Otherwise there are flights in from Chile (flown by LatAm) every week, as well as visiting cruises in the summer time. The Falklands have a rather well developed tourism industry and it's well worth a visit, especially to the local brewery!

Quite a few provincial and municipal flags in former colonies of the European powers, as it was a symbol of industrial wealth.

The City of Adelaide Flag immediately comes to mind, but there are many others.

That's a traditional heraldic depiction of a "fleece", although the inclusion of the head does indeed make it look dead.

Very tenuous, but the Coat of Arms of Ecuador has the Zodiac symbol ♈ for Aries, the Ram, on it. For a national flag it is the best you can do I think.

Below that level, the first that sprung to mind for me was the canton of Schaffhausen (literally sheep house).

Fittingly, a lot of New Zealand territorial authorities, and Queen Elizabeth II of New Zealand, have sheep (or at least fleeces in conjunction with sheaves of wheat because agriculture) on their flags.

I’m not British, but I just know there are a ton of seething Argentinians getting their comments deleted because they’re desperate to steal the islands from men women and children who’s families have been there for centuries - all because (like Israel) they were promised the islands 200 years ago by Spain 😂
