T-Mobile ‘actively working’ to fix ongoing outage, iPhone SOS mode

Update #2, 4:15 p.m. PT: In a statement to 9to5Mac, a T-Mobile spokesperson said:

“Our teams are actively working the reports of technical challenges impacting some customers. Any service impacts are in the process of being resolved and are our highest priority. We know how critical it is to stay connected, and every available resource is focused on resolving this as quickly as possible.”

Update #1, 3 p.m. PT: Some T-Mobile users report that service is returning to their iPhones. Others, however, say the outage is ongoing.

T-Mobile is down across the United States, and many iPhone users are seeing “SOS” in their device’s status bar. Here’s everything you need to know about today’s T-Mobile outage.

T-Mobile is down, iPhones in ‘SOS’ mode

Data aggregated by Downdetector shows that the T-Mobile outage began right around 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT. The outage appears to be widespread, with users across the United States reporting problems with their service.

A thread on Reddit has amassed thousands of complaints from T-Mobile subscribers who say they are unable to place calls, send texts, and use cellular data on their devices. There are also thousands of complaints from T-Mobile users on other social networks.

Several of us here at 9to5Mac are also impacted by the T-Mobile outage and are unable to use any cellular networking features on our iPhones.

iPhone users affected by the outage are seeing the “SOS” icon in their device’s status bar. This indicates there is no network connectivity whatsoever. If you see this on your iPhone, it means T-Mobile is down in your area due to the outage. You can, however, still make emergency calls.

As of right now, T-Mobile has not commented on the outage and it’s unclear when it will be fixed. it doesn’t appear that other carriers, including Verizon and AT&T, are also down.

Apple overtakes Nvidia as world’s most valuable company as it barrels toward $5T

Update: 10 days later, Apple and Nvidia have once again swapped rankings with $AAPL overtaking $NVDA. Apple has yet to cross the $5T market cap threshold, though intraday trading has the company around $4.944T.

Apple has officially reclaimed the world’s most valuable company title based on market cap. The company overtook Nvidia during intraday trading on Friday with its stock up 17 points this week.

Accessibility paywall on Meta Glasses ‘paused’ after condemnation [U]

Ray-Ban Meta Glasses and the latest cheaper non-designer option are sold on the basis of the built-in AI features, but in early July the company announced a “ridiculous” limit on the free usage you can make of an accessibility feature.

Claude Cowork escaped sandbox on Mac, gain full access to all files

Security researchers demonstrated that Claude Cowork could escape the sandbox intended to control the access it gets to your Mac. The exploit, dubbed ShareRoot, could allow an attacker to read and write files stored anywhere on your Mac, as well as access login credentials for online services.

Around half a million Mac users had co-work sessions exposed, and some still remain vulnerable to the exploit today …
