This is brand new info from a Chinese forum poster who didn’t have an insider track record, therefore the following is strictly for fun and giggles.
Best to read that first and this as well: "Hidden content is only available for registered users. Sharing it outside of Famiboards is subject to moderation."
Good on you for saying that we do still have some doubts about it, but I am cautiously optimistic on this one.
I have not said GameCube NSO controller out of nowhere on this though, the name of the PCBs I found very much could imply that, but for the time being, as of May 2024 (we can only see up to 2 months ago), it's in the prototyping stage, while having definitely GameCube parts showing up (this I can 100% be certain about, the question is whether they are related to the PCBs I found). All of this showed up for May 2024 and not anywhere before so we're still way's off for now. I am waiting for next month so we can possibly have further ideas on what's going on.
I see the topic of the file size coming up for GC NSO, I just personally don't believe that to be a problem, people should stop thinking Nintendo is just fitting consoles into an app template, they showed to completely adapt to the systems, it should be obvious to anyone looking at how the apps work. Also, a lot of GC games, even if it's up to 1.5 GB (for a single disc game), most of the important games don't fill the disc, heck, Super Mario Sunshine is 300 MB, some are even lower than that, so I'm really not worried about the file size, and if it was an issue, they would just adapt their ways to release those as seperate downloads.
Pretty darned sure Magolor was never ever implied to be dead in RTDL. He just... disappears. Was he dead, was he teleported somewhere else, or something, legitimately there was not a single thing implying anything about the future of Magolor in the original game. And that's most likely on purpose, considering how Kumazaki loves to be deliberately unclear and intentionally leaving holes in the stories of the games he directed.
I honestly prefer this system over Virtual Console which was always more expensive I want more games and not 5 games (at most) at the price of NSO + Expansion Pack.
I really stopped caring about ownership of retro games. The existence of ROM sites for decades completely destroyed this need to me.
I wish for you all for that old system to exist as an alternative, but otherwise, for myself, it is also handy to tell people who are subbed to play a game like Fire & Ice on NES and have it available without thinking.
I'm sure most people will be annoyed considering the comments that I read just now but the GBA NSO emulator is IMO on par with PC ones. I did talk about the AGS Aging Test which is mentioned in the video but I did mention that I tried endrift's tests in the same post, passing a large majority of it, it is not perfect by any means but it is respectable.
Now you can say whatever you want, you can still prefer unofficial emulation (fun fact: I do too I haven't forgotten my roots) We're not here to put that into question, this is more of a review of what Nintendo has done officially because I would like to remind all that a lot of people are frankly not willing to learn how to use PC emulators in the slightest (my experience in making people learn how to emulate 64DD games is talking here even when I try to make things super simple for everyone).
But even if Nintendo is still a large corporation, there's still a lot of manhours on these emulators and I still want to pay respect to them when they do a good job, and say when they do badly like with the N64. For an emulator done in a couple years this is unironically impressive to me that they went actually more accurate than M2's emulator (no joke M2's GBA VC emulator does not even get close).
Also, to my knowledge, GB/GBA multiplayer online is bad on PC. This is imo the one thing Nintendo has over unofficial means at the moment.
(And it goes without saying: Of course I hate the dripfeed too and wish they just make everything available.)
I'm one of the people who doesn't really care if people buy repros of hacks, just as long as you know that I receive 0 out of it. Just enjoy it and that's what I care more.
To be honest I do think flashcarts are better because you don't have to buy carts anymore and you can just put past and future hacks very easily in a SD card and play them on real hardware. It is a hefty price, but it's worth it imo.
Real hardware has advantages over emulation: It's the real hardware so there's barely any emulation (we could say it emulates a cartridge), and therefore you deal with a lot less incompatibility problems... (except if the hack is really not made for real hardware in mind, which happens).
I'm one of the people who worked on Dawn & Dusk:
I made a 64DD version that can work with the original cartridge unmodified (...provided that you have the equipment which is unlikely), and then I made a patch for the cartridge version which does not require the 64DD. I haven't tested without an Expansion Pak, but I would believe that works just fine without it.
Here's my thoughts about a bunch of these things while adding some to the list:
NES:
- Family Computer Network System: Honestly the worst preserved device currently, it reads card sized MMC1 cartridges and contains hardware for phone access as well as a Kanji ROM for character graphics.
SNES:
- XBAND: NO$SNS can actually emulate it to an extent but cannot play online. Is it really necessary though?
N64:
- Game Boy Camera: It is supported in Project64 and mupen64plus. Though only mupen64plus actually goes that far of implementing webcam support for it.
- Mario no Photopi: It's not really emulated, but I actually implemented a script for Project64's Debugger where it actually emulates card access here (ONLY in interpreter mode!): https://github.com/LuigiBlood/EmuScripts/tree/master/N64/Project64_JSAPI2
I have to note however that the encryption system in place is not emulated and does not allow you to mess with Character Cards.
- Game Boy Printer: The same link also leads to emulating the Game Boy Printer access for Mario Artist Paint Studio and Communication Kit, which is an unused feature because the hardware for it was never released. It works fine in Recompiler mode.
- GB Tower: Considering this is actual emulation of Game Boy on N64, I assume it has to do with the lack of accuracy.
- Capture Cassette: The link has a script for it but it's not really in a working state because I simply do not understand the video output format.
- Modem Cassette: There's a script I made for it, all it needs is being able to manage the buffer for raw dialup and to constantly fire interrupts and it should be fine.
Since you are interested in backing this up, I have something to say:
Dumping N64 development cartridges is a pain in the ass that only few hardware supports, you could use a GameShark but our experience with it left us sour with tons of problems in the process.
N64 copiers are likely to work, but the best ways are using an UltraSave (with 64drive) or a RetroBlaster Programmer (with N64 PRO adapter), but the problem with these is just how they're just out of stock...
So it is quite annoying, I'll tell you that much. But get in touch with Forest of Illusion or Hard4Games and they should point you to the right direction, we'll surely figure it out.
Mind you that I have lots of reasons to against Nintendo on many things, but I simply decided to not entirely pursue them on their use of community based efforts on retro systems. That said Nintendo is more lax than the press really makes it seem, even if they did some really pretty darn petty takedowns for no actual reasons at random times. That's the stuff I tend to get annoyed with, rather than the rest.
Okay so I need to talk about a few things:
- This is basically the last time I answer about it, I just don't have the energy. Be damned if my argumentation is terrible.
- There's a LOT of people who thinks the use of iNES header is proof of them using and selling downloaded ROMs. This post mostly is a response to them, and clearly not to people like you. To me the use of iNES header is simply not enough of an evidence of them selling downloaded ROMs because it is metadata information. (Again, for a lot of people; the act of selling downloaded ROMs is the main argument they use.)
The thing about this, is that WE know Nintendo has a big archive of NES ROMs, and NONE OF THEM have the iNES header, it's all seperated PRG and CHR ROM files, and there's a big spreadsheet that includes every NES game info including unreleased ones, with full mapper, size and checksum info and more. Nintendo has clearly done a lot of work themselves, and this alone is enough evidence to me that they totally can release titles without any need to download pirated ROMs online.
- When I talked about downloaded ROMs, in the main post, I specifically talked about downloaded SNES ROMs, it's not about the iNES header at this point. Seeing GoodSNES filenames inside a build found in the gigaleak particularly strikes me as evidence, but Nintendo still makes sure to use internally sourced ROMs at one point. This is a context thing, really. I'm personally convinced they did download pirated ROMs, but simply never used them outside of internal use.
- People are free to think there is foul play here. In fact, the entire post could make it seem like there's something wrong everywhere if the mere use of community made efforts is considered bad. I personally don't, but others have different sensibilities, the post isn't really made first hand to convince of one way or the other, but to provide proper information and a little argumenting here and there.
- I'd like to think the act of downloading ROMs counts as piracy no matter who does it and there's no way to change that. But I also kinda don't care about it that much.
So there's a bunch of legitimate critiques about the arguments I hold in the post:
Yes I pretty much ignored the subtext involving the iNES header use. I decided to not even care about the subtext anymore: So take the post at face value, draw your own conclusions on whether that's right or not, but I'm not going to change anything.
I partially wrote these posts in response to all of the bad information that accumulated by the press over time, and then partially because I actually just wanted to talk about this topic one last time before completely moving on. I've been talking about this stuff in many places, but simply never made a proper post of it.
Also, it really looks like the ones I'm trying to get to with proper information are simply not in this community, even.
But I can tell you that a lot of people outside this community rely on really misleading arguments and take things a lot more literally than they should imo
And when it comes to what I think of Nintendo using community made stuff: I don't really care, it would be problematic if they outright stole code or something like that, but they never really did that.
Well it probably has to do with that I don't care if Nintendo relies on community made stuff to help develop emulators as long as they just don't copy. (Though in that sense they did copy the iNES header. I should be mad about it but I just don't have that kind of energy to bother.)
Edit: It is noted though. I get what you mean.
Yes there is hypocrisy, in fact I don't even refute this in the slightest in the post I believe?
But people tend to rely on pretty bad arguments about it, and I just want to bring the real arguments to the table that only further suggests the hypocrisy, the entire post is about that.
Edit: There can be a lot to be said about the use of community made stuff. But somehow I just kinda don't care as much as other people do.
The entire argument that i saw about the iNES header is that "oh they downloaded ROMs and sold them back", my entire counterargument is just that it is only evidence that Nintendo developers used the iNES header as a standard, not evidence of selling downloaded ROMs, and keep in mind I was specifically talking about SELLING downloaded ROMs.
Because otherwise, yes, they downloaded ROMs, I'm pretty darn sure it is the case, but leaked emails keep showing me that they ask for archived ROMs for pretty much every system when it's about the public use. The context keeps showing me that they don't sell downloaded ROMs, but still use downloaded ROMs to help development.
Edit: For many people, just the use of iNES header, the fact that ROMs from VC and pirates can be identical is somehow evidence of downloaded ROMs being used on official releases. This is a response to those people.
Nintendo Life has also confirmed with its own sources that Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles are likely coming to the Switch Online service "really soon".
Now, Eurogamer has been able to separately corroborate these reports - and we have heard that other retro platforms are also on the cards.
If literally everything stems from a datamine then we haven't read the same thing.
Also Game Boy has a lot more games than the NES and SNES, there's a lot more Nintendo could rerelease and heck, I personally think they're not running out of games in general just because people doesn't like obscure games that didn't necessarily sell (just saying a lot of cult classics weren't sold either)
What do I do on a Wii U where I *literally* cannot get past the user selection menu?
All NNIDs are pretty much dead and emails & passwords are forgotten so we cannot log in into the Wii U Menu from them and then I cannot make a new user because there's a PIN code set up (and we don't know it) and cannot be disabled at this point because you need to launch the Parental Controls app, which I cannot do, so don't link the mkey website.
So this means that I have access to nothing, I cannot use any recovery options for NNIDs, there's no option to reset the system without accessing the System Settings (which needs us to log in first), and I cannot disable the PIN without accessing the Parental Controls application.
To be honest outside of Kamigami no Triforce (which is literally just japanese A Link To The Past as is with limited starts and how you lose the save after powering off, it should have worked actually), the ones that do use the radio audio actually cannot tell when there's audio, but the time is broadcasted... but we do actually emulate that in SNES9X, bsnes-plus and even on sd2snes/FX Pak Pro.
Personally I'd recommend bsnes-plus for playing Satellaview games in general, but it's odd that stuff don't work in SNES9X to be honest.
However a bunch of them aren't playable for many reasons, while soundlink is never really an issue (just no radio audio), a bunch of games rely on PSRAM to have a program and sometimes game data, unhacked BS Zelda (both AST and remake) makes use of that, BS Marvelous as well, which means at one point, at the end, it crashes and there's nothing you can do about it. Mighty Pockets is the one that hit the most because the 3rd one is unplayable.
About 64DD support, the changelog doesn't really mention it but it had a lot of updates between 2.3.2 and 3.0, now it supports Japanese Retail, American Retail (yes it's possible to support that) and Development 64DD IPLs and Disks.
It also recognizes every disk format, it isn't really relevant for most people, but if Nintendo ever puts out 64DD games officially you should be able to play the extracted format provided you rename it to *.d64. (If somehow Nintendo puts out an unknown format I'll make it work.)
You can also select between Slow and Turbo modes, Turbo is the default where loading times are pretty much instant, while Slow mode is used to sorta have seek times (it is forced for Mario Artist Paint Studio prototype because of Gnat Attack that really needs this).
You can set up 64DD IPLs either by loading them in the configuration, or simply by launching them like N64 ROMs, it will save the path automatically, you will never have to load them again if you play 64DD titles.
I've looked into the Capture Cassette before: https://github.com/LuigiBlood/64dd/wiki/Capture-Cartridge
Main issue is that I don't understand the video part. I got the audio part figured out I believe but I could not test the actual cartridge because I need a way to plug both my 64drive and Capture Cassette at the same time to really figure it out.
I also took a little look at the Modem Cassette, but not a lot: https://luigiblood.tumblr.com/post/177445115493/64dd-log-modem-works
I got it kinda working on real hardware with a Raspberry Pi using a modified DreamPi setup. The cart also contains a ROM with 3 ELF files with symbols as they are dynamically linked at runtime.
It was kind of amazing to find this out in a 64DD game, in a fully working state. I don't think the other games have such code for it either, but it's nonetheless interesting. I wanted to get this to your attention too since there was a command that was not mentioned in your documentation that can be used by the game for the original GB Printer.
Prototype is definitely different, in fact it has a little more of Kirby's Dream Course ideas in it. It's sort of a mix between the final Special Tee Shot and Kirby's Dream Course, and the strategy is a lot different as a result.
You can read about it here: http://snescentral.com/article.php?id=0037
I used the exact same version of Hakchi2, added the game and set the preset ID to 0x1058 using Ctrl + Alt + E.
It boots fine for me, recently finished the first 4 classes with no issues. That said if it works just fine with ID 0000 then don't bother. It's just to make sure, really.
I own a (slightly before) release day European SNES Mini.
Okay sure. Same games and play time, however I just find it weird how she remade the same stage and didn't put the same effort. Maybe there's a check in place for removed stages and you can't reupload it without redoing it and didn't want to bother too much, which makes sense.
Also being banned is usually not permanent in these cases, I've heard of bans that went for a few hours and grows if you get banned repeatedly.
However: That just means she reuploaded the stage since. That doesn't disprove how the other was not removed, so your original claim is still as invalid in my opinion. It's still not the same stage, technically speaking.
Same user? But the stage is different (like, for real, not the same design), the stage ID isn't the same either.
Any user can be named Rose. The only way to make sure the user is the same is to check their friend codes.
All I'm saying is while you can doubt Rose's intentions, your arguments are not very good either. These are not evidences.
These are not maps.
64DD TEST n64dd_SetDiskVersion(1) & 64DD TEST2 n64dd_SetDiskVersion(0) are to enable Disk Mode and disable Disk Mode, respectively.
A Zelda Ocarina of Time Disk would only replace maps, text, and some small other things. And with the way the game is coded, I can tell you one thing with 100% certainty: The only major changes that can be possible is Dungeon replacements, just like Master Quest.
Of course to use it, you need a Zelda Disk that works, which is something I'm working on.
The gist of it is that I actually tried to have something very unpredictable and random. This is great for more than 4 player matches.
It gets X-treme because all blocks are lava, and bounces around thanks to the bouncy rubber material. Depending on the fight, the ordering of tetris pieces will actually vary.
I know there might be glitchy physics, but there's nothing I can do, I spent hours just to get the main platform just right to Smash with.
EDIT: I just uploaded a video of it if you want to have an idea of the stage: https://youtu.be/ZppnQOg3ugE
As much as I don't like the idea of using VMProtect, that definition does NOT match a malware.
Virtualization and obfuscation has been a thing with many many software for protection (even more so with the latter), that's not just for malware material and in that case you should avoid many games and other kinds of software if you think that kind of stuff is malware to begin with.
So am I saying that I don't like your logic (and of many other people considering the upvotes)? Yeah. Absolutely.
VMProtect is used with the intent to protect code. What the code does in the end, that's where the malware could lie, and that's where I agree that you can be wary of.
I am assuming anti-viruses are taking a bit of a shortcut, because it is notoriously hard to reverse enginner and they don't want to take risks and that makes sense.
I'm pretty sure it is a port and not an N64 emulator made for it. However I believe they made a library to ease the porting aspects (but mind you it's not emulation) and it was also a thing for porting Dr. Mario 64 and Puzzle League in Nintendo Puzzle Collection, and Cubivore probably had the same thing (it was originally a 64DD game).
SMA4 VC ROM was clearly hacked to include the levels: The levels weren't part of the game, it was actually inside the cards and saved into the Flash memory inside the cartridge.
M2 who's managed GBA VC hacked the game to work with ROM data instead, they also put in the English version of all the levels including japan only ones.
I've mentioned that he was a contributor to iNES first and foremost. If that statement meant to people that he's the author of iNES then people really needs to read right. Also sound support is no small task.
Also there are interesting developments in that topic, which includes interesting FDS talks, such as Clu Clu Land D and dates.
I just think the plugins aren't the cause of many N64 emulation problems, as @ContributorX_PJ64 said. Things are just going slow overall, even if plugins like angrylion-rdp-plus and GLideN64 are being very useful. That said when I read it I just felt like I was reading a Dolphin apologist that wants the same for N64 emulation, though I'm not surprised at all.
But there are huge problems, like how a lot of people like me who's kind of involved in this don't have the skills to even help on deeper N64 emulation. That said, I do actually think Project64 only cares for its userbase, in detriment to emulation quality... and despite zilmar stating the contrary at times but I do genuinely think there's not much that's set in motion...
But I must correct a few things, the real nitpicks: I am not behind 64DD emulation as a whole. I have written a dumper, I believe I've done a lot for its preservation, until someone named Happy_ emulated the 64DD on MAME. All I did was improving the code and porting it to Project64. This code is also NOT accurate 64DD emulation by any means. Also Project64d is not a fork anymore. It merged with the real Project64 a while ago, so technically speaking, this debugger is now Project64's.
I made this :)
I tried to add really useful features and then just after I released it I already thought of how to improve it.
That said I found that emulators manages Satellaview downloads way too fast (my fault). To the point that BS-X's Download screen, normally it uploads the music to the audio chip... but it doesn't even have time to do so because all of the process was dedicated to downloading and since I constantly feed data it barely does anything else... and finishes download when the music isn't uploaded yet and that softlocks audio.
If you want more reasons: a boot ROM is exactly what it sounds like, a ROM. It's not Flash, it's like, engraved. You can't do anything about it.
It's also directly inside the SoC / CPU so the only way to change the Boot ROM is to change the SoC, and while there are eFUSEs that can patch the bootROM, the problem is that it's stuck, and locked and only done during the manufacture process. While I'm not a security expert, but at least I know the hardware basics.
And changing the SoC, you may as just replace the whole console because it contains eFUSEs and stuff that contains encryption keys from global to console unique keys, basically, it's a mess.
Actually, let me correct that statement for the third factor: I got Xenoblade 2 Direct and Fire Emblem Direct confused.
But certainly the week after the Xenoblade 2 Direct, there was already a blank space, and it was in November, proven here: https://web.archive.org/web/20170726075622/https://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/direct_links/index.html
I do also remember similar cases. This is not reliable to tell when a next Direct could be.
First Factor: That's just the reason this speculation is going on.
Second Factor: That's just assuming it is just 10 new games. They can very well be just about a little more about already announced upcoming games.
Third Factor: Last time there was a blank space, it was actually there last year. Just after Fire Emblem Direct. 100% sure of that. It does not mean it is a few days away.
I dumped the NAND of my SNES Mini and gave it to u/clusterm & u/madmonkey1907 who helped me along the way.
You missed so much that we can actually dump the full NAND and get to play Star Fox 2 on emulators: https://i.imgur.com/lndXV06.png
I get the point but I don't see r/emulation for that but maybe the mods are fine with it, I dunno.
Just to make people know: This version is indeed final. Even from the gameplay vids, some were able to see the changes, and honestly, the implications makes it that way, at least on my end:
I used to complain that Star Fox 2 Leaked ROM was too easy.
Now, I can safely say that I will complain that the final ROM is too hard.
Yup. Star Fox 2 final seems to be a lot more harder than it looks if you base from your playthrough of the leaked ROM if you played it. Consider the leaked ROM to be the easy mode. Final version is actually a lot tougher than it looks.
"Why do you need to do it on RHDN?" Ever heard of what a community is? That's really basic stuff. It was there, it should stay there. Members talks to each other of many topics. There's still a need to talk about off topic things. Every community has that. If not, it's certainly not a community to me.
And if you put that aside: Remember that staff didn't even know about this until it was public, and staff (except Nightcrawler) was even locked out of the forums, which means they can't even moderate those. All I'm seeing is bad management. I don't know why I should trust that person.
He's even promising stuff that can only be done if you have staff for it. Not a one man job. I don't trust it one bit. Also remember when RHDN was down and literally no info got out about it and someone else even trolled that it was ending? That could have been solved easily if the staff even knew anything, which they didn't.
So I've learned more things and it makes it even more questionable: Indeed the staff did not know about this until the Patreon is live, and apparently even the staff is locked out of these forum sections until they become patrons.
And then he promises things that requires other people to do it? If he can't even manage his own staff, like, just not even caring for them, why should I trust Nightcrawler? All I see are stuff that alienates the community just to get some money from people who doesn't look.
At this point I may just want someone else to replace Nightcrawler. I didn't trust him to begin with, but now I just don't wanna give him a chance.
Yes there are some questionable ethics. But not about the Patreon itself. I'm fine with the idea of a patreon for most things.
But the site itself is restricted for no actual reason just to have basic content only accessible to patrons. And then the staff just happens to be not knowing about this until the Patreon is live.
For a site that is quite community based, all I see are stuff that alienates the community more than anything else.
Nope. I won't help them. And I suggest you guys to not do it either.
-
Access to Patreon only site development forum section
-
Access to Patreon only general forum section
I'm sorry but what? Freely available content (even useful content) not accessible anymore behind a paywall. Also making all development stuff stuck because they can't access it anymore. I think they don't deserve the help.
And looks like Nightcrawler himself knows since you can't comment on this. General section would have been the perfect place to talk about it... except you can't access it unless you're a patron. Perfect.
Also I wonder if the other staff even knew about this, just to see if there's still bad management going on.
EDIT: So I didn't notice "SITE development" because I'm a dummy. However that means only patrons have the right to talk about site problems. Where do you talk site issues for regular users who can't be patrons?
There are 3 different versions: The first one has an already compiled ROM file that has already leaked since like 1999 or something.
Second one has compiled objects but not linked into a ROM file so I can't try it out (and we don't have the linker). It's also much further up in development.
Third one seems similar to the second but has no compiled objects.
Both second and third were never leaked, but they're also not even close to the near final version that's out there. The music is from those versions.
Hi, I got a Raspberry Pi 3, and want to do a little project for someone else (which uses Processing) that requires a 20" touch screen (or at least around that size).
But what I'm worried about is support with Raspbian out of the box, I've heard of a common issue where only single touch is supported (I assume default generic driver) and I need much more than that. I've heard of some easy fixes but might require modifying & compiling hid-multitouch and stuff... While I do have programming skills, I'm not sure of dealing with kernel drivers.
So I'm asking if there are people who have such multi touch screens and have had great experience with it, at least to find something good enough. I insist on a size of around 20 inch.
Thank you in advance.
I have no idea. All I know is that there are dumps of the last original Kirby minigame (nowhere to be found so far) which is Ball Rally, a few undumped F-Zero stuff, a game that has pirate in the name, etc...
EDIT: Here's a blog filled with emulator screenshots of dumps that we can't find http://blog.goo.ne.jp/randnetdd
If that ROM site somehow has those I'd love to see it...
Here's an Arduino based dumper that is fully open, and you can make your own (with a list of components you need and stuff on the wiki of the project): https://github.com/sanni/cartreader
And what's cool about it is how you can probably adapt it for other systems. This thing supports SNES, N64, GB/C/A carts (via adapter).
Plugin is not an issue. Also many emulators are using plugins. Dolphin still does. It's all internal sure, what other emulators does is external. It's not ancient and I think there's no issue with that.
There was no malware in Project64. Only the installer, which was quickly circumvented with unofficial builds.
So hi, this is LuigiBlood (aka KiiroBomber on YouTube), you've probably heard of me from videos of MetalJesusRocks about the US 64DD retail unit or Hard4Games. If not, here's a little introduction about what I've done.
I've helped these guys dumping their IPL ROMs (or I guess firmware to be simple) and blue disks with the dumper I've created back in 2014, which was used to preserve all the retail 64DD games, if you see dumps of those online, it's most likely done with my dumper. I've also helped on the emulation of 64DD by porting the emulation code from MAME to other emulators (Project64 and mupen64plus-libretro), and also improve the code as well.
Needless to say, I tend to be involved in almost everything 64DD related lately, and I want to show that I'm trustworthy.
Now to the actual topic: I'm simply making a call to every owners of blue disks. I want to find as much blue disks as possible to check. If you want to lend them (or sell them? or simply donating disks?), please let me know. Of course if you know anybody who owns or owned a blue disk in the past, please try to get them to contact me.
If you don't know what are blue disks, they are development disks. Basically, they can contain betas of games. And oh boy, 64DD has a lot of cancelled games, starting from Mother 3, or simply Ura Zelda addon for Ocarina of Time. Both are the most popular cancelled projects and fans sure are dying to find those.
We kinda have a network of people who has the ability to dump blue disks, in the USA and Europe, so if you don't want to send disks across the ocean, that's fine, we can send them to the closest person possible.
And one thing that I have to make sure of: No, we don't release dumps without the owner's permission. The only time that might happen is when the owner has deceased. I want to maintain trust to people, if I release things I shouldn't then there goes my chance to check more blue disks. That's how it is.
If you already dumped your disk, well I would also like to have a dump for research and also to make sure it's preserved not only in a single PC.
Don't wait though, bitrotting on magnetic disks (and no, it's not magneto-optical disks) exists. They have the same issues as regular floppies. If you happen to know what's in your disk, you might want to check it.
Now, how to contact me? Well I'm on Reddit, feel free to PM me. I'm also on Twitter (@LuigiBlood), my DMs are unlocked, so you can just directly send a direct message at once. I'm also on AssemblerGames as LuigiBlood. (Avoid YouTube's messaging system though. It's terrible and I keep missing messages because there's no notifications. =( )

There are only japanese DD games.
But I made a translation patch for Mario Artist Paint Studio (still unfinished, but still like 99% of the translation done). There's also a translation patch going on for Sim City 64, Polygon Studio (though I may redo it myself, we'll see), and Doshin The Giant.
That build is literally just Project64. It's not a custom build by myself or anything. The only differences are that I include more plugins and different default settings; that's it.
EDIT: Oh and that it is a development build from the repository that's including more fixes since 2.3 release. But there's no changes to the code itself that I've secretly done or anything. I'd use that build for regular N64 gameplay as well as 64DD.
N64 emulation is so complex it needs several devs to get something right. There's one big issue: There's barely anyone interested. Lack of interest? That means pretty much nothing will happen.
People are working on stuff, or not, and people are people. Can't force them if they don't want to do it.
It's basically proof that digital downloads are really hard to preserve if not done fast. The Memory Packs are the storage for the games, and what we can preserve is usually the last downloaded game on these things, as it usually replaces previous downloads since there's not a lot of space.
It's quite a mess.
This is one article that should be shared to anybody clueless to the situation.
I've worked on Satellaview emulation, as well as 64DD preservation and emulation (just think that until last day of 2014, there was no dumps of every 64DD games until I wrote the dumper). So this topic is quite dear to me as I'm dealing with unpopular systems.
64DD's games are preserved at least, but Satellaview: we're not even close.
As someone who watched the video, and know how to deal with vids (unlike a few of you here), here's all the info he said (I removed all of the opinions except a few):
-
Switch was revealed last E3 in private to developers.
-
Hardware shown is not the final design.
-
He thinks no one really knows the price
-
Different bundles, with some Wii U ports offered for free
-
Zelda BOTW is in QA, issues with localization
-
Nintendo has not decided yet if they will release BOTW at launch or later (should be locked before Christmas)
-
Huge game lineup up to 10 months after release (lots of unreleased Wii U games ported to Switch)
-
New IP & Old IPs coming back
-
Lots of ports by 3rd parties
-
Mario Kart 8 port with new content, and real battle mode coming back
-
Small fee to get Wii U ports to owners of the original digital version.
-
Nintendo is thinking for physical owners
-
Smash Bros. Switch: Story mode, new fighters (maybe Rayman?)
-
Pokkén Tournament: Switch version, new content
-
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Switch version, new content
-
Microsoft is trying to be closer to Nintendo
-
Bethesda is definitely making things for Switch
-
Switch power is between PS4 and PS4 Pro
-
Portable mode is less powerful than Dock mode
-
Ubisoft has lots of games coming for Switch for the 6 first months (maybe Steep?)
-
Mario x Rabbids: Heard about it for about a year, heard about RPG/party game gameplay style
-
Switch is only one console and intends to stay for a while. (Responds to rumors about how Switch is not only one console)
-
Talked to Masamichi Abe (1080° Snowboarding director) about making a new 1080° Snowboarding (Nico has a game studio which Abe has visited before)
-
Abe reponds they don't give IPs like that but suggests instead to make a new IP, "Ubisoft is far ahead with Steep"
-
Thinks Nintendo wants to do sports again, thinks they started working on new 1080° and new Wave Race games recently judging from that talk.
-
Mario Sports Superstars: Switch version
-
Overheard a discussion at last GDC that Nintendo wants to focus on open world, mentions Zelda and Mario.
Q&A section:
-
Nintendo is making devkits, not Nvidia.
-
OS is quite top secret. Nintendo has made a new team specifically for it.
-
Heard about Android hybrid, allows things between Smartphones, Switch and 3DS.
-
GameCube Virtual Console
-
Switch seems flexible enough for hardware upgrades.
-
New IP revealed next E3
-
Switch has custom Nvidia Tegra, better than X1. However not X2 for budget reasons.
-
Nintendo is trying to get exclusive games from Platinum Games, Square-Enix, Capcom...
-
Nintendo is keeping the 3DS/2DS afloat until sales goes down.
-
Nintendo does not abandon motion gaming.
-
Question about Achievement system: There will be one to thank people for playing.
-
3rd parties pressured Nintendo for an achievement system like Xbox and Playstation.
-
Retro Studios is working on 2 big games (one that is familiar, the other isn't)
Some speculations were translated over the actual claim:
-
He heard about "multi retrocompatibility", not about 7 slots, I understood that part as a wild thinking.
-
There's a new Mario game that's not 2D at launch.
-
Huge amount of content coming for Splatoon NX
-
FF15 compatible with Cloud amiibo
-
Bayonetta 3 compatible with Bayonetta amiibo (I admit for those ones, it's quite DUH)
-
There's a new tech called "Creative Motion" by Nintendo. He doesn't know what it is, and he suspects it is one of the reasons why Nintendo didn't show it yet.
I care more about such small details than a few other people. Now if people wants to badly do their job translating correctly... (Now, I don't mean that I believe these rumors, I'm just looking at those. Don't try to claim that I believe these.)
And if you want more details on what mupen64plus badly needs some fixes:
-
Interrupt system is faulty, it doesn't enable interrupts fast enough. It's pretty much because of that that I can't seem to make 64DD emulation working.
-
Graphics emulation: GLideN64 may be one of the best things that happened to N64 emulation, there's just a problem: the bar is still set so LOW. The other best thing was paraLLEl, and that one is promising at least.
Some of the translations are bullshit.
He didn't say no dock, he said it was a device with an HDMI plug that can wirelessly take the video to the TV. That's not a dock but it still does the function we expected at the very least.
From what I understood from the video (and I'm french, mind you), it's a reverse Wii U that's simpler to develop for, more powerful, but it seems Nintendo is still secretive about some features. It's apparently not the main gimmick of the console.
