Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has urged the public to "avoid speculation" after police launched a murder investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe. In a statement posted on X, Mahmood said she had spoken to the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police and that the Home Office "stands ready to provide whatever support they need with their ongoing investigation." Devon and Cornwall Police said the 78-year-old was found at her home on Dartmoor in Devon on Thursday with serious injuries. Detectives say they are looking for a white man in connection with the investigation. Widdecombe served as the Conservative MP for Maidstone for 23 years before later becoming a prominent Reform UK spokeswoman.

Rachel Reeves appears to mock Nigel Farage after confirming she will accept his resignation as MP, clearing the way for a by-election in Clacton. In a post on X, the Chancellor said she would not stand in the way of Mr Farage stepping down, describing the move as "a farce" and "a desperate distraction". She added that he can now spend "the summer arguing with a bin". This comes as Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and Restore Britain have all decided not to stand candidates against Farage, meaning he could face a group of independent candidates, including comedian Jon Harvey, AKA, Count Binface.

Nigel Farage has announced he will resign as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election which he says he will stand in. In a live video statement, the Reform UK leader insisted he had "done nothing wrong" and said he had "not broken the law in any way at all" or "misused public money", while accusing the media of targeting him. Farage also said he had "never been angrier" in his life, claiming journalists had approached his daughter at her home. Earlier, he accused Sky News of "harassing" his family. Sky News said it had not contacted any members of Farage's family about the story. The announcement also follows reports that long-time ally George Cottrell, who has a conviction for wire fraud in the US, provided funding for the party leader's security and staffing in the year before he was elected to Parliament. It is the latest financial controversy involving Farage, who is already under investigation by Parliament's standards commissioner over a £5 million gift he received from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne.

Sir Keir Starmer has urged Andy Burnham not to launch an immediate bid for the Labour leadership if he becomes an MP, saying the focus should instead be on the upcoming Greater Manchester mayoral election. Burnham is widely expected to challenge for the leadership if he wins Thursday's by-election in Makerfield. A victory would also mean stepping down as Mayor of Greater Manchester, triggering a contest to choose his replacement. Speaking at the G7 summit, Starmer said the potential mayoral election would be "very important", adding that Labour were "going to have to pull our sleeves up to make sure that there is another Labour victory". The Prime Minster also said a leadership contest would be a "bad thing" for the country and added: "I hope he wins the by-election and he'll play a big part in the Labour government."
