About

Pink-haired Enbie (alternatively referred to as Enbie girl) refers to a non-binary ("NB" or "enbie") character associated with a copypasta popular on 4chan parodying the LGBTQ+ community that reads, "hey truscum idiots if enbies don't exist why are they so heckin cute and valid?" The copypasta and the character began growing popular in the summer of 2020 and was used in multiple variations.

Origin

On October 30th, 2019, Redditor snowypig[7] posted the image of the pink-haired enbie saying the phrase in /r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, gaining over 10,000 points (shown below). The image was generated via LGBT Friendly Icon Creator[8] created by finndraws.

Precursor

The expression "cute and valid" is meant to both brighten the targeted people's mind by complimenting them, and to express acceptance towards their gender or sexual identity. Although it can be and has been used in other contexts, it is mainly used in messages supporting LGBT+ people. One of the oldest recorded occurrences of this expression was used in a June 2012 a reblog[1] of a Tumblr post by openmindcollective which featured a wholesome scene of a kid reacting to a gay couple (shown below). It was also used on November 12th, 2015 by the artist Rebecca Bronson in a Vice interview.[2]

A WIFEIS A GIRL AND A HUSBAND'S ABOY. AND YOUTWOARE HUSBANDS. YOU MARRIED EACH OTHER? THAT SFUNNY. THISIS THE VERY FIRSTTIME I SAW HUSBANDS & HUSBANDS! HEY,I'MGONNA PLAY THAT MEANS YOU LÖVE EACH OTHER! PING PONG NOW. YOUCANPLAY IF YOU WANT TO Ridiculously cute and valid :) shootthemutant: Can we just take a moment to realize how this child is acting more maturely than half the population of the earth? That will be all.

From 2017 to 2019 particularly, it began to catch on in the LGBT community for gender-nonconforming people, such as transgender and non-binary individuals, appearing multiple times in online LGBTQ+ communities such as /r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns[4][5]

Spread

On July 18th, 2020, an anonymous 4chan user tried to derail a /s4s/ thread about monkeys by posting the question about enbies[3]:

hey truscum idiots if enbies don't exist why are they so heckin cute and valid?

Anonymous 07/18/20(Sat)18:25:19 No.8870870 hey truscum if enbies doent exist why are they so hecking cute and valid?

The "cute and valid" comment came after several weeks of the term "truscum" being discussed on boards like /pol/ and /lgbt/. In August 2020, this sentence started being used as a snowclone on various 4chan threads. On August 9th, one such post featured the 3D rendering of a goth woman with pink hair as an attached picture.[6]

Later permutations would involve substituting different groups being "cute and valid" or different people being asked about them, or linking the picture of a strawman person to associate a group with them. Additionally, sometimes the phrase "cute and valid" would be replaced with something which rhymes or resembles it in alliteration. Furthermore, the term "truscum idiot" became a recurrent ironic insult. Finally, the pink-haired woman in the aforementioned picture became the subject of multiple fan arts. Many copypastas would change up the design of the Enbie character entirely, and, eventually, one particular variant became her own character. See Ashbie Moon.

Sometimes trans folk can come on very, very strong about this stuff, but from their perspective, I honestly can't blame them. Trans people face so much goddamn suspicion, misinformation and hate that it really is a daily struggle for them to just get people to accept them for who they are.

The whole Chud (i.e. an alt-right/far-right traditionalist, basically your usual 4channer) gets the Enbie (a person who is non-binary, who are usually pretty left-wing/liberal since you know the right-wing is really into gender essentialism) is just a pure 4chan self-esteem masturbation contest.

Like I'm genuinely waiting for them to start writing fanfics where they're the main character and where they're cool and get the girl and everybody loves them. It's like half of 4chan memes are "ignore reality, we're the cool ones, they're the ugly ones". Are they actually that deluded or is it just a way to boost their own self-esteem?

Also, why are 4channers so pre-occupied with black men? Like they're ALWAYS talking about them in relation to how left-wingers are supposedly want to fuck them/be fucked by them. Same thing with different sexual fetishes. For instance, they claim that left-wingers are all into cuckolding, but I am 100% certain that the majority of left-wingers learnt about this fetish FROM 4channers, not the other way around. Their accusations sound like confessions.

I have a lot of chud exes who always forget I’m trans. I tell them all the time, but my life’s circumstances keep me forever at the wannabe stage. Some of them support trans rights, but when they see the hyper-feminine body that I have and hate, they just go full coom brain. So, I unironically relate to this ship.

Sorry for making it trend, lol. Never intended to.

If you want more context for my comment you can look in the gallery, basically: 4channers drawing comics about how cool they are, in those comics they draw themselves as super cool guys, who get the pretty liberal girl, while drawing lefties/libs as ugly and pathetically unable to do anything. I don't know if it's a genuine delusion or just a way to boost their own self-esteem. I know that children draw comics like this as a coping mechanism when they're distraught by something. I just think that a lot of them are truly losing their grip on reality and it makes me a bit concerned.

Does enby have official pronouns? Can't tell if she/her or they/them. There are non-binary people that can use other pronouns than they/them but not sure if this person is one of those cases.

I'm just confused as to why people think this is infantilizing or smug. I've seen people call each other "hecking cute and valid" a dozen times on the internet and it never fails to make me smile. It's heartwarming, affectionate, reaffirming, all that good fun stuff. I just don't see where the hate comes from.

Did y'all forget that period on the internet with "rawr means 'i love you' in dinosaur"?

We are just fooling ourselves if we think the original image was made in that good faith. It literally starts by insulting a target as "idiots" and a fictional label. Nobody starts a conversation with the intention of making friends by insulting them unless they already are good enough friends with that level of trust achieved.

this is probably going to be an unpopular opinion but just as someone who used to be in this crowd, i feel that the sort of "uwu you are heckin valid" thing comes off as kinda… off. it's always come off as "you are valid but the only way you'll get this type of acceptance is with baby talk and pastel aesthetics."

maybe as a young teen that kinda thing comes off as acceptable, but then you turn into an adult and become more mature and it becomes weird.

but this is also a very personal opinion from experience from years of ending up discovering my identity through tumblr.

I do believe of course that nonbinary deserve more than just to be coddled, but at the same time, to me, this doesn't feel like that. It feels assuring it feels safe. And yes, it may seem childish, but I firmly stand with C.S. Lewis when he wrote "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”"

I wouldn't dream of hating on a group pf people who feel comfortable enough to have a bit of harmless fun on the internet. Not in an "ooh, nothing will ever hurt you and no one will challenge you" kind of safe space, but a "I understand where you are coming from, and even though we disagree, I hope we can both learn and walk away friends" safe space. The original drawing seems like something friends would send between themselves, not like something that was meant to blow up and be mocked as it is.

I’d only obligate as to legal protections. Socially it’s still a minefield.

If you refuse to confirm it, clearly that means you're denying their existence and are a horrible phobic bigot.

From my experience, mot nonbinary people aren't looking for confirmation: they know who they are. They're looking for acceptance: other people know who they are and will be okay with it.

So what if people don't want to fully adhere to either gender norms? Being non-binary is, in a simple way to put it, basically that. How is a few individuals wanting to be androgynous going to negatively affect your life? These people aren't hurting anyone by living that way. It's just another orientation, or a "type" if it's easier for you to understand, and yet you people are treating it like some sort of made up "Twitter snowflake" bullshit.

Actually, in a language you can understand: you people not only accept, but love the tomboys and the femboys, which are complete opposites of how they're traditionally "supposed to be." So why is it so hard to accept the non-binaries, when they're like an average of the two? Trust me, just a few years ago I was the kind to watch SJW cringe compilations, so I belive you guys can change, I belive you can become a more accepting person. Once you realize that these marginalized groups are just regular people who aren't accepted for who they are currently, you will realize how little this discourse matters. And now, I embrace the inevitable downvotes.

Well, that point would get across much better if a big chunk of their time was not spent talking down to the very people they pretend to live amongst without having their gender identity be scrutinized. If it really was just "basically that", then the story would end there and nothing else happens. But nope: passive-agressive cartoon character winning a made-up argument about gender it is.

People take issue with these type of people and not with tomboys/femboys/whatever because the latter are not being smug about their mere, literal existence and making up words to label people that disagree with them. A tomboy wears pants, has short hair and maybe plays sports; these people give 10K upvotes to an image childishly insulting those who adhere to the concept of gender dysphoria being real. The only thing those 2 have in common is, as you say, not hurting anyone, which is a bare minimum bar that simply means we will not jail them for it. We still do not have to like something or someone just for being harmless. Clickbait Youtubers are often harmless, but they are not any less stupid and even scummy because of it.

So yes, embrace your inevitable downvotes, and maybe learn something from it if you truly care about this topic as much as you tell yourself and this is not just about telling us how morally superior you are after your illuminating personal change towards being a more accepting person… who does not accept most people's opinions about this.

I do not accept most people's opinions about this because it's straight up discrimination. How is hating on non-binaries any different from hating on anyone else on the lgbta+ community? Would standing up against homophobia make you a hypocrate because you don't accept that people say homophobic things? If enbies were accepted as much as homosexuals are, it would be easier to see the problem. I agree that the cartoon itself is smug but that's not my point, what I'm saying is that a great deal of people here are putting every single NB person in this same category. A non-binary person just wants to live without having to adhere to gender norms, and the reason some of them are smug about their existance is because in many cases, no one else in current society will accept them so they might as well go and validate themselves – and yes, this can be annoying and backfire as mentioned, but try to see things from their perspective. This isn't about the meme, it's about the thread. Being non-binary doesn't automatically make you a Twitter idiot.

Some people just aren't fond of the "smug" attitude because it's not always "smug". A lot of the time people can be downright condescending about these kinds of things, especially on twitter. However, as you said, not every non binary person is a twitter idiot. I can't speak for other people but I think it's this crowd they take issue with, rather than non binary people as a whole.

Personally, I think people are free to express themselves however they want so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else and so long as they don't use it for something obviously ridiculous (ex. saying you identify as another race so you can charge someone with a hate crime). The best thing for people to understand each other is for people to level with and relate to each other. They should be themselves first, personality wise. Gender, sex, sexuality, orientation, and everything else are less important. Still important, but if the person's kind of an asshole in the first place? None of that really matters, why associate? If they're genuinely cool people? Why should it matter?

The meme as a smug thing can sit and spin. IRL ENBie individuals don't have to sit and spin, The only ones that could apply for that are the kinds that are smug douches and rude individuals but even the dislike itself has to have limits. Otherwise being a phobe douche wouldn't really have much of an excuse just because of a handful of pricks that were non-binary.

The overlap on that specific board is so large that it gets the nickname of "/co/mblr" a lot. The mass exodus probably pushed a further migration/influx.

We can literally tell the difference between a male and female brain due to hormone/chemical/synapse differences. This is how we made transgender people valid since we were able to prove that people with gender dysphoria were born with the other gender's brain.
For a non-binary gender to exist it would need a brain with a hormone/chemical/synapse mapped differently than males and females AND could be mapped similarly in others I.E. how male brains are similar.
Non-Binaries have yet to prove this.

Saying it is a new gender is like saying a person born with webbed feet is a new species.

Many pro-nonbinary people I have met even gave up on proving it scientifically and argue I should accept it due to "morality."

The impression of it being right-wing comes from the fact most changes people want to see in current society leans left, and everyone here automatically opposes it without a second thought, or claims everyone unhappy with the now is just a "snowflake" if it leans left or an "incel" on the rare event it leans right. But just because it's not actually far right doesn't make it any better. For instance, this entire thread is just "Non-binaries? Never heard of them, so it must be something made up by Twitter SJWs" and it sucks

Like, there's been research on brain physiology and gender identity, and I think the medical consensus is that the hypothalamus decides whether a person is cis or trans, but has there been any research into how NB works? Because the way it's spoken of and advocated for today only makes me think it's a cultural/sociological reaction rather than a physical, quantifiable phenomenon like trans, but I don't really know what to think because there's so much idiotic discourse around the "70+ genders" thing, but I don't think it's wise to form an opinion based solely on bad Tumblr takes.

Though I'm not stopping someone from cutting their reproductive organs off or themselves say they're some other sex or gender. Sorry to be blunt but that's how I feel about these strange ideas people have on their sex.

I personally think trans people or NB people need a therapist/psychologist to help them not encourage them to do things that may damage/alter their bodies or minds.

Biological sex is whatever body meat you use to fuck, while gender is whatever behaviors society expects you to have because you possess that meat. Non-binary people are folks who don't feel like they solidly fit in either category enough to identify conclusively, so they just don't bother. It's kind of like genderfluid people in that sense, though as far as I'm aware genderfluid people actively express more masculine or feminine traits on occasion and thus aren't as solidly undefined as NBs.

For one, nonbinary genders have existed for almost as long as human civilization has, with some of the oldest recorded from around 400 BC in ancient Hindi texts describing Hijras, people who described themselves as being "beyond" male and female descriptors. For another, a society's definition of gender is incredibly flexible, given the fact that it's all made-up bullshit when you think about it, so to be nonbinary is just to observe how people categorize men and women and to just find yourself not fitting either description, which is a wide-ranging umbrella. I mentioned genderfluid people for example, without realizing they fit under the umbrella of NBs instead of being a separate category. Gender roles are a different thing entirely, about what place in society somebody of a specific gender should have rather than what their expected behaviors would be (women cook and take care of families while men work, and all that shit).

They're not homosexual or trans, as those types of individuals have been clearly transcribed as well, as far back as the Sumerian age. As for the rest, that men or women can like something that's not stereotypical of their gender is the point, that there's a difference between what makes someone a male and what makes someone a man. The first is immutable, it doesn't change, it's scientifically defined. You can't objectively define what a "man" is, because every trait you could name that isn't physical could be given to a woman without any trouble. The point is how you define yourself.

And no, gender roles aren't just about stereotypes. A woman's gender "role" being to cook doesn't just say she likes to cook, it says that her only purpose in existing is to cook. If she refuses to cook, she's not "in her place", as it were. Defying gender roles has nothing to do with what gender you actually are, because it's casting off the stupid notion that people were born to do anything based on either what meat goes between your legs, or what label you or anyone else gives you.

Hijra do not identify as either male or female, explicitly. The internal conflict and poor self-esteem is palpable. If you were really comfortable about who you are, you wouldn't be shouting from the rooftops about how wonderful and happy you are with yourself.

People declare themselves trans, or non-binary, or gender-fluid specifically because they're dissatisfied with what they are and how they were born. Be honest about that and people will be very willing to help you. Live in denial and rub your nonsense in people's faces and they'll speak ill of you behind your back. The choice is yours.

I mean, to be fair, there's a reason for the overcompensation. Yeah, it's everywhere and repeated again and again by the nb/trans community and it gets annoying. But they also live in a society where basically no one, except for people inside their own circles accept them. So they end up internalizing that they're actually [birth gender] and use the "you are a beautiful nb and valid!" to compensate with it.

I'm also skeptical about the "actually in denial about their gender" argument since other lgbt people on the spectrum such as gay men and lesbians parade their orientation around, and no one would say "they're actually straight."

It's common knowledge even among kids that gays, lesbians and bisexuals exist, and in the past few years trans people have started being a little more accepted, but nonbinaries only very recently have started coming out. And even I am guilty of it, because until a few years ago I didn't even know nonbinaries or aces existed, so I just assumend they were "snowflakes" and now I deeply regret that phase.

Society is far from accepting them, just look at almost every single upvoted comment on this thread about how they don't actually exist "because biology." Lowering your barriers and risking being made fun of is terrible, and keeping in all the stress and depression from being excluded would make you miserable, so you think you have to express this anguish somehow. And even if you cringe at this, you have to remember that behind almost every smug meme about being valid, is a person about to collapse.

"Tucute" is an alternative term for the opposite position, "anti-transmedicalist". I think when it was first coined it was more specific, but that's been lost over time.

I don't mind people with gender dysphoria to move from one side to the other but if the whole pletora of atack helicopter genders could just fuck off from earth that would be great. I feel like genders are now considered like internet identity where your gender is your pseudonym, your little flag is your avatar and the whole description of what it actualy is is the backstory of your OC. Everyone gotta have a unique identity so everyone make new genders I wouldn't even be surprised that some of those people just creat new genders when ever they get bored of their previous fictional gender.

Hell I'm autistic and I warmed up to it around the start of this year.

Then again, use of "autistic" as a stock insult is still recognized as incredibly discriminatory, so one can also argue that its 4chan meaning was rejected rather than reclaimed.

Basically it's saying that nonbinary people are correct in their gender identity and that they look attractive while doing so.

It sounds like some cutesy language that implies I'm a goddamned child (Hell, even a child would feel insulted, since as Mr Rogers says, kids know when they're being talked down to.) Even the goddamned argument itself is so childishly immature – 'they exist' is an argument a five year old would make when you say 'it doesn't exist'.

gender is how the brain perceives your sex

sex is what's between your legs biologically

OK, I'm going to draw the line at spectrum-based sexual orientation. You either like boys, girls, both or none. Combinations of boys and girls go under 'both', and you can give us your Cobb-Douglas function for U(M,F) later. Indecision is fine too, but most people eventually decide to align with one of the four I described, so why treat it as an orientation in and of itself?

Gender gets weird because unlike sex, where patterns we find in animals reflect those in humans, gender seems to be unique to mankind. There are definitely more genders than sexual orientations, but the spectrum model here allows you to make gender categories that only include you, making the classifications incomprehensible. Gender is a categorization system like sex, not some unique identifier. Don't try to turn a categorization system into a replacement for personality.

Too many people devote tons of space to their gender and sexuality, and their pronouns, but leave a description of their personality at a single word, not realizing that it's the thing we most want to know. Without any further insights into someone's personality, I'm forced to conclude that the spectrum models of sex and gender are crutches for dull people to make them seem and feel more interesting than they really are.

What even is an enbie? What is a truscum? How did we get here?

You know, I have to admit that it is a good one in some ways: it is made in such a way that it touches every right nerve the way it is worded (and each word chosen as well) and presented to illicit the response it seeks to get. It does kind of give itself away with the word "hecking" though, a commonly used word 4chan uses to mock reddit and other people they dislike.

Dunno whether Reddit or Google is to blame, but obviously, for those who want to document such trends, it sucks big time.

Simply put, while I looked at "cute and valid" on Google Trends, I noticed several major peaks before 2015. The oldest is from April 2009, but centring the Google research on the year 2009 resulted only in links to several Reddit threads, belonging to a LGBT subreddit: r/bisexual. And lo and behold, this subreddit was created on April 14th, 2009.
During my previous researches for other entries, I had already noticed that many Reddit threads would be proposed even though they were much more recent than what my criteria were. We should look into it in more details to be 100% sure, but that's probably the correct explanation.
