Thanks. Tapan and Vikram. What an
exciting time we all had in planning
and carrying out the calibration
experiment in the Little Rann of Kutch!
It became an adventure trip too for
the youthful team with a high octane
professional spirit to carry out the
impossible tasks and enjoy them too.
DB Dave, RK Kewalia, A M Jha,
Vikram Desai and Tapan Misra did a
pioneering job. Vikram was a tough
task master. Dave in our team was the
early bird and go to man for all the
problems we faced. He was extremely
comfortable with the geography and
history of Little Rann to Astronomy
and Astrology to the hard-core
electronics. Later, Dr G Raju who had
just returned after getting his PhD in
Radar depth sounding of the ice in
the Antartica joined the team. We had
many more in our dedicatedvsupport
team. Even our drivers were so much
motivated to drive in the Rann. The
enthusiasm was so much contagious
and caught hold of everyone.
Such an external calibration of the X
band imaging radar SLAR, built by us
in the early 80s, was carried out for
the first time in India. Looking at this
photo of Tapan and Vikram, I feel so
happy. Those were the pioneering
days of building airborne and
Spaceborne imaging Radars in India.
We started the journey with a humble
X band real aperture imaging radar.
We learned so many lessons during
the development and airborne
evaluation of the radar. As Tapan said
that led us to develop the first C band
Airborne Synthetic Aperture
Radar(ASAR) in our country in the
early 90s, in the year 1992 to be
precise. The state of the art RISAT 1
emerged out of these early efforts of
this young team at the Space
Applications Centre, ISRO,
Ahmedabad in the year 2012. And the
NASA ISRO NISAR, ofcourse, is the
crowning glory of these sustained
efforts of a highly motivated and
courageous team.
I am proud that our key member
Tapan has built the highest resolution
L and P band drone based SARs in the
world now through his start up SISIR
Radar.
What a highly satisfying and
pioneering professional journey it was!
We all enjoyed it thoroughly.
