Brew releases a video criticizing YouTubeDrama and August the Duck for pushing unconfirmed claims against Todd Oland

To clarify the allegations against the subreddit, 1 user made a post in mid April accusing Todd Oland of intentionally freezing a cat to make an animal rescue video which got 2.3k upvotes, then the same user made a second post effectively retracting those claims (including deleting the original) and it only got 100 and pushback. August the Duck made a video on the first post. Did not make one about the 2nd. Same goes for news sites. The user then deleted their account.

However, this post is here to provide some actual pushback, as I actually went back and checked, this very clearly happened in a short time frame (within 1 or 2 days by my estimation), and 2.3k is incredibly abnormal for that period of time (where posts were getting 800 upvotes at most, but often in the 100 range.)

Having actually checked the 2nd post, usual users of the subreddit did support the retraction. These comments were not shown but people being hostile to the retraction and post author were. Simultaneously, the subreddit name was shown constantly any time these posts were displayed, but not the actual context around these posts or the comments.

In fact, Brew even clarifies that one of the hostile users from the original post was from an entirely different subreddit, showing that the post was reaching far outside the subreddit's usual audience. As well as that, the screenshots Brew uses are clearly from the 1 or 2 day period. This is incredibly important, as it is late July, about to be August. That is 3 months of sitting on these screenshots. Brew also fails to properly clarify the harassment campaign Todd Oland experience did not start with reddit, while simultaneously showing the subreddit and these posts while talking about the harassment Todd Oland received.

For a channel and video purporting to support critical thinking, almost none was used in the making of this video. Already, I've seen 3-4 separate attempts to post this video in the sub blaming the subreddit and it's usual users for harassing Todd Oland. I also have seen a comment of someone snarking and and saying "Uh oh, did redditors cause someone to kill themselves again?". His video title is about Reddit despite the harassment primarily taking place on YT and having started on YT. Brew also clearly shows that people did have a legitimate reason to doubt Todd Oland, while obviously he did not deserve to be harassed and I personally seriously doubt he harmed any animal, it's clear the video was made to be a defense of Todd Oland and to get people to feel strongly about the situation.

The deep irony of this video, is despite the subject being about people attacking someone over allegations with no evidence, it has now slated to do the same to others.

I did some research Brew probably did see, but didn't care to elaborate to their viewers.

The large majority of the harassment happened in March, since at least March 25th. By the time the original post came around, that was April 6th. There is Facebook posts, Instagram posts and Threads posts from around that time period. As well as TikTok results too. Meaning the initial post was part of a wave of attention across social media period.

August the Duck's video released April 7th, and the 2nd post was made before that on April 7th. It took less than 24 hours for the post author to cop to spreading misinformation, delete the initial post, and delete their whole account.

For reference, this is when the initial video was made.

Here's when the first bit of harassment started. March 11th

I still don’t get why so much effort is put around the sub. You can’t deny that it atleast participated in the harassment, and that it also spread the info even more. I fully get, that you and the sub isn’t responsible for these harassment by itself, but you can atleast acknowledge, that he got harassed likely incorrectly or on low evidence. There should be more energy put in to make people aware that this kind of behavior isn’t good as society 😅. In the whole video my conclusion wasn’t: this sub is evil, now treat them the same as they did to him.

-3

Now if you did do the quick scroll through the sub you'd see the large majority of posts on this subreddit are explicitly about this kind of behavior not being good in society.

Frankly, suggesting to redirect my energy towards the things I already proveably do, along with the large majority of this subreddit, is just redundant and disrespectful.

Given the amount of threats and geniune harassment that has taken place since this video has dropped... you guys want this subreddit to take responsibility for outside individual's actions? How about Brew viewers take responsibly for everything they're doing first? Even if I know you are not doing anything to me, your fellow audience is doing it too! So you gotta take responsibility, that's the logic you guys are putting out!

9

Do me a quick favor.

Scroll through the past month of posts.

6

Gonna sticky this because this is real. We now have people threatening violence against others in the sub since the Brew video has come out. This comment was made towards a user that wasn’t even involved. But was made on the only Oland post up, the retraction post.

It was made within the last two hours.

Edit: Claims made by Brew and their team in the video have been disproven based on looking up the timeline the post was up for less than 24 hours and the harassment was ongoing for over a month at that point.

Obligatory comment about how Brew is run by a company (AWED corp. ) that hires voice actors and script writers. Spill is another channel run by this company.

i was so confused how people are talking about Brew as a person. i was like, are we talking about the content farm Brew ? Or is this someone else? Turns out it's that same one.

91

They used to be the one that did voiceless videos about makeup YouTube drama right? Incredible what a rebrand can do.

22

The fact that the YouTube thumbnail doesn’t even mention this sub, he constantly refers to other subs but only has our sub on full display? Fuck that.

Already had a problem with him entertaining the idea that Epstein isn’t dead and they placed a body double. That is just a dangerous claim that has been invalidated

Around the 3 minute mark https://youtu.be/Wnu7PoC-Wyk?is=Y_vA62CUnc97Emwl

“Whether this is true or not”

It’s not. We know it’s not.

I’ll also say Oompaville made a video on this topic before Brew did as well https://youtu.be/b2VAiFBXz-E?is=1lIBCiSRP3qUUjjp

35

I mean for fucks sake, the video has only been up for 2 hours and has already caused people to come to this sub and attack the subreddit 4 separate times, that's insane. That's dangerous as hell too.

35

Actually I had to ban 3 people already for threats of violence against people who didn’t even accuse Todd

41

The sub itself shouldn’t be attacked, it’s individuals and even them shouldn’t be attacked. And reflecting on such stuff is good for everyone.

12

This feels so unnecessary. I don't see how this reaction is warranted on an accusation that had been retracted in such a short timeframe.

The vitriol from Brews fanbase is likely only to cause further damage and harassment for all parties.

44

Exactly, even as head mod of this sub it was only up for 24-48ish hours then pulled down. The user retracted and deleted their whole profile.

From his own video this sub wasn’t even the driver of the harassment. And the sub was receptive to the retraction and most had a problem with the OP.

They are mentioning it in August’s comments.

Will just say that sometimes people "doing there own research" hurt actual innocents. Like that one dude who got accused of being of the boston bombers

11

Richard Jewel, anyone?

4

Whenever people blame this subreddit for something I know they're immediately full of shit lmao. Like get a grip its a subreddit.

13

Oh my god thank you. I thought I was going crazy reading the comments on that video. I am the only one I've seen there pointing out the hypocrisy of everyone just assuming he's innocent and that redditors are the bad guy. There is no concrete evidence yet either way! I thought that was the whole point of the video, but then at the end he starts acting like everyone messed up and accused the guy because they were desperate for a bandwagon to ride on.

What we do know for sure is, there is a lot of holes to this guy's story and some of his actions don't seem logical if he were being truthful. Like, if you know the people you gave the cat to...then why not just ask the person for pictures of the cat? Instead he decides to drive into town, go to this person's street...on the off chance their cat might be outside to take a shoddy video of that instead? Where is the logic behind that? By his own admission he knows the owners. And knows them well enough that he knows exactly how many days they're on vacation...But he couldn't ask them for a picture of the cat in its new house?

Then redditors are being blamed for being suspicious about the metadata. They have every reason to be suspicious of it! That photo he provided he was acting like the cat was alive and well, he didn't make any mention of it being a year old photo... or say anything about this story that "he didn't have the cat and gave it to new owners" until people pressed him for proof of life. He was posting pictures of the cat in his community and never made mention he never had the cat anymore until people started digging.

Then he posts a video of the random much older cat chilling on the grass, never talking about how he didn't find the original cat a year earlier until people discovered it for themselves in the metadata. It's just weird. It doesn't make him guilty, but with all the circumstantial things together people have every right to be suspicious.

He makes no mention of any vet updates either. No vet check up after it almost died of hypothermia? No mention of the injury it has on it's left eye? No vet check up by the new owners to get it chipped, spayed, vaccinated? No vet check up after this cat had allegedly run away for days to make sure it hadn't been bitten or hurt in any way while it was gone for that long..?

But redditors are the bad guys just for asking for proof of life for a cat he chose to make everyone's business by uploading a video and making money off this whole thing?

Oh and I'd like to add, he claimed the cat "got out" when the owners opened the door. Conveniently it just "got out" the day before he promised to go make a video of the cat for proof of life. Then days later he uploads a video of two cats just chilling outside on grass. Cats that are clearly allowed outside and used to being out. That is not the type of cat people would describe as one who "got out". I've never heard an outdoor cat being spoken of like that when they're just allowed outside on the regular.

There is a lot more that doesn't add up but don't want this post to get too long

Edit - Ok actually one more small thing. The last video I watched of Brew involved him talking about the Luka Magnotta case. In that saga included a man who at the time the case was being investigated, reposted Magnotta's animal abuse videos to a forum of people trying to solve the case, claiming to be the man who made them. The internet found out who he was and obviously sent him a ton of angry messages and threatening to get the cops called on him. That guy ended up killing himself. For the rest of the video Brew kept referring to this man as "innocent" and trying to make the narrative that people shouldn't have bothered him or something like he was a victim. He's not innocent at all. He was reposting animal abuse videos (that's illegal in itself whether you made them or not) then on top of it was literally telling everyone he was responsible for making them. He might have been "innocent" of making the videos, but he certainly wasn't innocent, and he deserved every mean message he got. The only person who made him kill himself, was him. He was clearly already disturbed if he was acting like this. I'm getting really sick of people on the internet being blamed over merely reacting to evidence that anyone sane should and would react to. There are plenty of snarkers etc that absolutely deserve to be called out for going after people. But people asking for proof of life of this cat and telling this guy his evidence is extremely flimsy are doing nothing wrong here at all.

And at the end of the day, he still has not provided any concrete proof that the cat was alive in 2026. It's been over a year, and we're supposed to believe he just can't get any photos of the cat from that time when he claims he knows the owners? It's not adding up.

This is the first I've heard about this case btw, I only have info that was in Brew's video. So if anyone has any info to fill in I'm all ears.

14

Oh, that's why the Mod Queue is filled with people throwing slurs and threats to an OP who deleted their account after making a post clarifying that Todd Oland might not have done any abuse four months ago.

I'm posting this right before I log off knowing that I'm basically inviting a ton of comments from these same types of people.

6

Yeah it is a problem but yet here we are the problem

4

Damn... People go way to far and something out of nothing. We see it time and time again, yet it still happens too often.

I don't believe reddit is as bad as some creators/podcasts make it out to be, it seems like part of it is the keyboard warrior loud minority that often ruins it for us all.

I think reddit can be a great thing, and I think reddit has done a lot of good things. That's why I'm disappointed, I love this place, but there's a lot of bad now, a lot of shoot first and ask question later. There was a time this rarely occurred. Now it's so often I've stopped paying attention because I mentally cannot.

We've fallen quite the ways down from the days of when we were seen as a group of online justice seekers that tracked down a guy who posted videos of himself killing kittens.

I wish I had some type of advice to end this with, but I don't. I do wonder when taking things like this so far will crest the tipping point and people will be more suspicious of those making the claims, holding all the evidence to a higher level of scrutiny. So often we assign malice to negligence, or something like that.

This feels really disingenuous. Acting as if 2300 upvotes constitutes a “witch hunt” is just abhorrently ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that acting as if “brain-injured” people deserve more moral grace is inherently ableist (spoiler alert: “brain-injured” people can be terrible too). Oh and don’t forget the baseless speculation of “almost brought the police down on a vulnerable man”. This is so obviously just a virtue signal that its content is not even remotely useful.

8

We've removed your comment because it breaks the Remain Civil rule. Please refrain from insults, hostilities, or general shit-flinging towards other users of the subreddit. If you think someone is breaking the rules, use the report button. Thank you!

4

Nobody here has responsibility though. Seriously, go through the video, find out how many of those commenters are still active in this subreddit. Main poster deleted their account, they took responsibility.

And then as an aside, wouldn't you say a 6k upvote comment/post just like what's displayed in the thumbnail has more responsibility? Where's that from? Does anybody here know?

9

First, I am coming from this post not from the YouTube video so I am not part of brigading who'll come for OP or The Mods. I just want to say the second post is a poor example of retraction. This is a subreddit with 200K member and 2K concurrent user the 2.3 K upvote in 1-2 day is not abnormal since allegation of animal torture is bound to explode through the algorithm, even past the usual user of the subreddit who only upvotes on online celebrity drama stuff.

The fact that the retraction is tittled 'Alternative Theory' does not sound like a proper retraction and bound be thought as another allegation on Todd, Although the poster did delete the original first post it does not help with the fact that the OP deleted their account not long after, curbing the algorithm for the retraction to spread.

Since there's now several attempts to post the Brew video on this subreddit, Mod could've make a mod post that address and links to the 2nd post and pinned it for a while rather than trying to swinginf with the ban hammer and spread more drama by Streisand Effect, left to few days and people will find new things to brigade about.

11

It isn’t “swinging the ban hammer” to ban people spreading violence and brigading. Brigading is against TOS.

11

I like the brew channel but feels like the owners are pushing the team to churn out videos while still pushing their whole " we are independent" bs
