Mark Lasky who took over when Ernie died in '82 was a very close family friend. But shortly after taking over the strip, he fell seriously ill with Leukemia. After a crucial bone marrow test that would determine whether Mark would live or die, those close to him asked about the result. Mark simply said "Look at Thursday's strip".It was a drawing of Sluggo with tears in his eyes....looking at melting snowmen.... with the caption "I'll never see my friends again".
