Summary of police briefing that I just watched:

• Police responded to a call about a man looking at parked vehicles

• After police made contact with him, they say he left on a bike going through back yards "in what looked like an attempt to escape"

• Next contact was made on Willy St and Baldwin where all the videos are taken

• Chief claims its not known whether the man fell off his bicycle or was removed by officers

• 4 officers are involved

• The man was attempting be restrained and arrested by 3 cops

• The man produced a fixed-blade knife and injured the male "veteran" officer

• A second officer was injured by unknown means unrelated to the knife

• A fourth female officer enters and shouts "taser, taser, taser" and fires the taser.- Chief of police claimed taser didn't work

• The man is shot 3 times in the head by the same male officer injured by the knife

• This male officer is described as being a "veteran" officer, and chief is unclear what unit he is currently assigned to, but believes it wasn't a patrol unit

• Life-saving measures were attempted by on-scene professionals(?) but shortly abandoned

• Man is transported to a hospital by Madison Fire and dies in the hospital

• All 4 officers have been placed on administrative leave

• Chief claims pictures of the knife will be posted soon

• Chief is reluctant to respond to questions like "People are calling this an execution, what do you have to say?" "Would you say this incident involves an excessive use of force?" and defers to details not being revealed, and says he will wait for DCI (Division of Criminal Investigation) to confirm details

Can we get body cams now?

An officer stopped by my home (I live by the co-op) not too long ago and asked about any footage my front door camera may have caught. My dog alerted me first then I heard the sirens, but nothing was caught on camera since it is “event” based and it’s random on what it considers significant. I’m not sure what to make of this because it won’t change the outcome… but figured I’d share.

I’ve felt frozen all afternoon. I love this neighborhood but I see a lot of people either living in peace or in their hardest moments here. Earlier today, I saw a woman crying at the bus stop and normally I’d say something but I had to proceed with caution as it looked like her mental health wasn’t so great. Which is awful, people need help and they deserve it. I try to walk my dog by people who are struggling because he always makes them smile and gives them a bit of normalcy. He does more than I can think to do. It makes me feel helpless when people aren’t receiving what they need, and when they are at their lowest, in crisis, is when something finally happens and sometimes the result is loss of life? And then what? Do we change how we approach these situations? It doesn’t seem like it. I don’t know anything about this particular man, I’m just rambling because I can’t imagine ever feeling like I needed to hurt someone, nor take their life. I also don’t have the answers. I just want change.

Just saw this story on ABC news with David Muir

Looks like PD will be releasing a statement at 3:45.

Just want to clarify that the incident report from MPD lists 1:35 PM as the time of the incident, we know from the police scanners that the pursuit started at 1:30ish and they report the GSW on the scanner, request ambulance and report an officer injury around 1:35 PM.

We don’t know yet (officially) that he was a suspect in another shooting (weird there is no incident report for that on MPD as of rn if so).

We just know the GSW victim was on a bike and being pursued by police for something. I’m sure we’ll get more context on what started the pursuit in 15 mins when they do the press conference.

Will any stations be airing the media briefing live?

If absolutely nothing else, hopefully this can be the push we need to adopt body cameras on ALL MPD officers. It is absolutely unacceptable that we haven't adopted this measure.

I kind of figured he was deceased, based on the long delay.

Unironically, this actually is a moment for the Independent Police Monitor to shine. They need to have a preliminary report out ASAP. Not months from now. Days. Burn the midnight oil and get this done.

Police usually protect themselves because leadership can't be seen to throw officers under the bus or they'd have a mutiny. Officers circle the wagons because they believe that incidents could theoretically happen to any of them.

However, here we actually have a mechanism for someone to issue a report and be the "bad guy" to police leaders. They can point to OIPM report and recommendations instead of investigating themselves and finding no wrong. I believe the state DOJ is required to investigate as well, but lord knows when that will occur.

Big moment for the OIPM, Chief Patterson, the Mayor, and the Dem candidates. And Madison. Play your cards wrong, folks, and all this ends with Governor Tom Tiffany.

In one video, it sounds like one cop says "he's got a knife" then the suspect is pushed down and then shot. Within a few seconds, it looks like a different cop pulls a knife out of the suspect's hands and tosses it on the street behind the suspect. Again, no confirmation, just what it sounded and looked like.

Per the livestream: the victim has died of his wounds, cops claim he pulled a knife.

- shooter cop (male, veteran officer) was reportedly injured by the knife prior to the shooting, unclear on the delay between the stabbing knife-related injury and the shooting

final edit: stabbing was the wrong word, the chief claims the officer was "injured by the knife" but from the video any injury looks to have been pretty glancing

Thank god there were people there recording this and I hope anyone who witnessed it is taking good care of themselves. This is so awful. Whatever that guy did is no reason to shoot him three times in the fucking face.

How is there 4-5 cops on the dude. He gets tased and thrown to the ground. A cop steps on him. And STILL the other cop comes and point blank shoots him 3 times. That video is fucking crazy.

This is the 4th person I can recall being shot to death by police in the area since 2012. A recap:

- November 9, 2012 a 30 year old man was shot in his front yard on Morrison Baldwin.
- March 6, 2015 Tony Robinson was shot by police in a home on Williamson.
- June 30, 2016 a 41 year old was shot in the entryway of a home on Baldwin and Morrison.

Police were cleared of wrongdoing in all instances. It is a pattern and a problem they hope you forget about over time.
