@solitha@mastodon.social yeah im aware. afaik the ddos was directed at someone who was trying to basically dox the owner of archive.today (personally i think a ddos was a bit much, but then again i might think differently if the FBI was looking for me), and the altering of web captures was limited to a few pages related to the event

Other alternative tactics…
* Use archive.org or archive.ph to make an archive. Sometimes those are allowed through paywalls.
* Activate reader mode in my browser.
* Deactivate JavaScript in my browser.
* I use a (desktop) browser extension called something like remove overlay, which does that and restores scrolling.
* Print to PDF.
* `view-source`
I think the reason most of these things work is poorly designed pages use JS to hide their content after they load.

It's about 75% of the time I get the article.
I also had one instance where switching my browser to 'reader mode' bypassed the paywall.
I find that most times the content that's blocked is simply not worth the effort I've put in to get to it.

@maxleibman like a few other others, if I really, really, really think that I need to read it, I'll go see if I can unpaywall it via the archive. It doesn't always work, though. If I try four times with the four different buttons that come up, and none of them work, I just close the tab. It must not have been meant for me!

@maxleibman ublock origin's element zapper is surprisingly handy for removing subscription popups, most times you can just use the page normally after zapping the Subscribe to Keep Reading window

Depends how much I want to read it and whether reading it would enrich my existence...
