Why couldn't I sound like The Neptunes — even with the exact same gear?
In 2003, Billboard reported that The Neptunes were responsible for roughly 43% of songs on U.S. radio. Two guys from Virginia Beach. That’s not influence — that’s domination. One became a global icon. The other stayed invisible.
That invisible one was Chad Hugo. And his chords were the locomotive pulling the whole operation.
For years, I chased that sound obsessively — and got nowhere.
I remember sitting in front of a shiny silver Korg Triton, same presets, same era, completely convinced I’d finally cracked it. I had the gear. I had the reference tracks. I had the obsession. And still, nothing I made sounded like The Neptunes. Not even close. It was like trying to paint the Mona Lisa with the right brushes but the wrong eyes.
The frustrating part? On the surface, their music seemed almost too simple. Raw drums. Sparse arrangements. Mixes that felt deliberately unfinished. Nothing to hide behind.
And yet it hit harder than anything else on the radio.
It took years before it finally clicked.
The secret wasn’t the production. It was the composition — and its deep, deliberate roots in jazz.
Once I understood that, everything I thought I knew about making music had to be rebuilt from scratch. The gear was never the problem.
Here’s what the mainstream music press consistently gets wrong: they treat The Neptunes as a Pharrell story.
Pharrell’s contributions are real — his instincts, his melodies, his personality are all over the music. No question. But watch the studio footage carefully. Pharrell plays melodies. He programs the drums. What you almost never see him touch is the harmony — the chord architecture that holds the entire sound together.
That’s not a minor detail. That’s everything.
That’s Chad Hugo’s domain.
🎶 Why This Matters
Chad Hugo isn’t jazz-influenced. He’s jazz-trained.
He met Pharrell in a seventh-grade jazz band — Hugo on tenor saxophone, Pharrell on drums — at a program called the Center for the Gifted Arts in Virginia Beach. Before that, he was already studying piano at home in a Filipino-American household where musical education wasn’t optional. He later attended Kempsville High School, played in the marching band, and built the kind of formal harmonic foundation that most beatmakers simply never develop.
That jazz DNA never left him. To this day, he reportedly sits in with local bebop and swing groups in Virginia Beach—not for shows— just for fun.
That jazz background, fused with cutting-edge music-making technology, is what helped the duo build something genuinely unrepeatable.
Every artist who passed through the Neptunes’ orbit seemed to carry the same rare instinct — something straight out of jazz culture: the ability to write melodies that refuse to land on the obvious notes.
Justin Timberlake. Usher. Kelis. Missy Elliott. Gwen Stefani. Sade.
All of them knew how to float above the safe choices — to hover on the unresolved note just a beat longer than comfort allows. To make tension feel like home.
That’s exactly where I kept falling short.
My melodies always resolved. Root. Third. Fifth. They landed exactly where they were supposed to — safe, comfortable. And that is the one thing The Neptunes never were.
That’s not a coincidence. That’s Chad Hugo’s chords doing their job.
When your harmonic foundation is built with voicings that expose the 9th, 11th, or 13th at the top — naked, unresolved, restless — those extensions become melodic invitations. Write your melody to meet them up there, floating on the tension instead of resolving it, and suddenly you get that signature Neptunes sound: sexy, harmonically intense, somehow both urgent and weightless. Push it into falsetto, and it becomes untouchable.

The concept is simple. The results are not.
Most producers voice chords with comfortable top notes — roots, fifths, thirds sitting up there like a warm blanket of consonance. Safe. Resolved. Expected. Here’s what that sounds like:
N.E.R.D. — Spaz [The Neptunes, 2010] Fm7 — LH: F / RH: F–Ab–C–Eb–F (Root - b3 - 5 - b7 - Root) Root on top. Settled. Consonant. The minor 7th stays safely tucked beneath.
But Chad Hugo often does the opposite. He opens his voicings wide, placing the 9th, 11th, or 13th at the very top — bright, slightly unresolved — and invites the melody to meet it up there.

The recipe is straightforward:
Put your extensions — 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, or bright chord tones like major 7ths and b7ths — at the very top of your voicing. Double them an octave below. Let them breathe. Then write your melody to meet them up there.
That’s the cheat code. That’s what I was missing at that Korg Triton all those years ago. The gear was never the problem — understanding how harmony and melody work together was.
Before you move on — try this:
Listen to these chords. Play them. Then resist the first melodic idea that comes to mind. Sing or play something less obvious. Float above the harmony. Sit in the tension a little longer than feels comfortable.
That’s where the magic lives. That’s the whole thing.
