One of the best things about being a freelance designer is building a career that’s all your own. But that independence is also what makes freelancing so hard. Finding clients. Brainstorming. Getting paid. Unlike their W-2 counterparts, freelance designers are responsible for every aspect of their business. So who do they turn to when they have questions about how much to charge, what software to use, or how to chase down clients? Often it’s each other.

There’s power in shared information. But until now, there’s been no way to share it at scale. That’s the premise behind the Design Pricing Transparency Project, a joint project between Fast Company and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Over the course of six weeks, we surveyed nearly 1,300 freelance designers about everything from how—and how much—they charge for their work to what they like and dislike about their jobs. We also asked 150 hiring managers about how much they pay for projects, whether they’re replacing designers with AI, and their future plans for freelance hiring.

The resulting report is a detailed snapshot of the freelance financial landscape. Our report digs into the nitty gritty of how freelance designers work now—and how they’re using technology to shape the way they’ll work in the future.

Section 1
Demographics

Understanding the state of freelance design first requires an understanding of who freelance designers are. More than 1,250 designers and 150 hiring managers completed the survey, giving us a broad look across industries, geography, and disciplines. The majority of people who took the survey identify—not always exclusively—as graphic designers or designers who work in branding. A large subset also work in creative direction and art direction, with illustration and user experience (UX) design following behind. Many of these designers are full-time freelancers, with a smaller number of full-time salaried employees who freelance on the side. They tend to be an experienced bunch, with 35% of people reporting they’ve been working in the design industry for more than 20 years. Midcareer designers are well represented too, with 42% reporting they’ve been in the industry for 5-15 years.
