DWP rule change for PIP, DLA and Carer's Allowance claimants

New DWP rules mean people on PIP, Attendance Allowance, DLA or Carer's Allowance who permanently move from England or Wales to Scotland must now apply for Scottish benefits themselves, rather than having their claims automatically transferred.

Need to know: new rules for disability benefit claimants moving to scotland

• The Department for Work and Pensions has introduced new rules for people on Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance who move from England or Wales to Scotland.

• Claimants must now make fresh applications to Social Security Scotland for equivalent Scottish benefits. Previously, cases were automatically transferred when people moved north of the border.

• The changes affect all DWP disability benefits including Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance for Children and Carer's Allowance. People are urged to apply for replacement Scottish benefits as soon as possible after moving to avoid payment disruptions.

• Social Security Scotland's deputy director Karyn Dunning said: "It's vital disabled people and carers who move to Scotland take action to ensure they continue to get the financial support they are entitled to."

• The DWP will continue paying existing benefits for 13 weeks after someone moves to Scotland. Successful applicants may have their Scottish payments backdated to when their DWP benefit ended.
