There are multiple types of permanent residence documents or statuses in Sweden, which can lead to confusion about residency status. The application processes and rights granted depend on your citizenship and what you're doing in Sweden.

Hej, I have Uppehållstillstånd which expires in May 2026. I have to wait 2 months prior before renewal. Meantime, I applied for citizenship in May 2022 and have heard nothing further from Migrationverket. As a British retiree, married 18 months ago to a Swedish citizen, with a house purchased here in Sweden 5 years ago, and with pensions exceeding the new income requirements, how do I not meet the citizenship criterion? Would appreciate your response.
  • Hej, I'd have to know a bit more about your case - how long have you been living in Sweden for? Do you have permanent uppehÃ¥llstillstÃ¥nd or permanent uppehÃ¥llsstatus? Is it a temporary residence permit expiring or a permanent card that just needs to be renewed? Also do you want to know whether you meet the new requirements or the current ones?

As you said , it is very complicated about regulation of permanent residence permit. I have question. what categories refugee quota falls? Especially , refugee those come through UNHCR from second country.

I'm still fuzzy on the difference between uppehållsstatus and the "permanent" one you can apply for after five years. The latter does say it will be lost after five years "away" from Sweden, however it's unclear what the time period is if you are on the other version. Also on how the word "away" is applied - does simply setting foot in Sweden count as interrupting the five years, or is it necessary to become resident again? Maybe no one knows, but curious if there is official answer.

Hej, Can you please explain why you say this: "In most cases, you will have to apply for a work permit if you also wish to work, but check with the Swedish Migration Agency if you are unsure." My understanding is that if a PUT is obtained after 4 years of working in Sweden on work permits as a non EU citizen, one of the big benefits of the PUT status is that the resident no longer needs to tie their residence to their employer. Can you elaborate on the cases you refer to?
  • Sorry yes that's a bit unclear, that bit refers to the residence permit only, so before you get permanent residency. So essentially if you want to work in Sweden but need a residence permit, you'll usually need to apply for a work permit. You're correct that once you have permanent residency you don't need to do this anymore.

I am a US citizen, retired. I have been living in France for many years and France provided me with the long term resident EU card. I have applied to change my residency to Sweden (family, grandchildren live in Sweden ). I filled in the forms, provided proofs of identity, that I could support myself etc., paid the small fee and now await a response.
