Rumor: Sony using bots to pushback against “physical games” narratives

ASTRO BOT

Internet bots pushing political or corporate slop is nothing new so this really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Some suspect accounts appear to be among Sony’s most ardent defenders in the wake of their decision to phase out physical game production.

According to YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, these accounts engage in suspicious activity and AI manipulation to appear authentic. Meanwhile the accounts are pushing some of the most consistent and aggressive defense of Sony’s decisions.

For example, one account posted controversial and hateful comments in order to gain followers before pivoting into sanitized advertisements like you’d expect from a press release or marching orders from a client.

This account, for example was created 6 years ago but for some reason was wholly inactive before it decided to start advertising Grand Theft Auto VI and defending Sony.

So what is all the controversy? Earlier this month, Sony announced their plans to phase out physical game production and move to entirely digital sales. Critics have voiced concerns that digital copies of games are generally speaking a mere “license” to access the game, rather than true ownership with a physical media copy.

This argument has merit, digital licenses make it almost impossible to sell second-hand games. This also could empower platform holders to unilaterally revoke access to your games (Make sure to read those Terms of Service and EULAs).

Not to mention what this means for game preservation, games are regularly de-listed from online retailers. While Steam has done a pretty good job of giving consumers access to their games even when they’re delisted, the threat always exists and while Steam may have the good will to operate digital-only, Sony hasn’t earned that trust.
