Influencer sparks controversy as he slams 'tacky' Taylor Swift for extravagant wedding
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were surrounded by their family and A-list celebrity friends as they got married in Madison Square Garden, but not everyone is happy about it
Taylor Swift has finally married Travis Kelce, with the celebrations forcing streets to be closed and police officers to be out in droves.
The couple tied the knot at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 3, announcing the news on jumbotron screens outside the venue which read, "JUST&T MARRIED!" A lot of work went into the wedding, with an extensive security detail in place.
The cost of police for Taylor and Travis' big day is believed to have been around $160,000. According to reports, roughly 130 officers from stations across the city were assigned to events related to the wedding. Roads were closed around MSG, causing chaos for locals.
Following the wedding, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker hit out at Taylor and Travis for the extravagance of their celebrations. Insisting he is still a Swiftie, Hasan said, "Controversial opinion: I think this is a dramatic misuse of public resources."
While no clarification has been provided for Taylor and Travis' wedding, the cost of private NYPD detail is usually billed to the event, as opposed to using taxpayer money. Despite this, Hasan continued, "Sorry, I'm f---ing say it. I think it's insane. I think it's a bad look. I think it's heightening the contradictions."
The influencer added, "It's showcasing once again that, no matter how beloved a public figure you might be, you're still - if you're a billionaire, you're still a billionaire and you are going to do billionaire s--t."
He suggested Taylor and Travis' MSG wedding was "a flex" before adding, "I kind of think that it's a little tacky. At best." Hasan's comments sparked a debate on social media.
Some X users agreed with him, with one person writing, "I’m sorry but he’s right. I’m sorry, swifties." Another fumed, "During a heatwave in one of the busiest places in the country. She’s so evil."
A third critic suggested, "I think any wedding that affects the lives of others not in attendance, pedestrians n locals, shouldn't be allowed imo." Someone else seemed more conflicted, writing, "This is so tacky and ostentatious I don’t understand why people have big weddings, but I can’t hate, she donated to a lot of charities. I want the smallest wedding possible, I don’t really get this."
Other X users rushed to defend Taylor. One person pointed out, "Anyone who puts on an event in NYC and the NYPD mandates a specific police detail or requires you to hire city resources, you will have to pay for it out of pocket."
"Uumm...what makes you think that the Bride and Groom aren't reimbursing NYC? Given the charitable contributions they made prior to the wedding, I'm thinking youre just looking for attention," someone else echoed.
A third Taylor fan said, "It’s a private event, they can do whatever they want with their own money. There are billionaires who do worse with their money."
Before Taylor and Travis got married, they donated $26 million to charities. A press release issued ahead of the wedding said, "This week, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift donated $26 million to charities across the United States. They include the following: City Harvest, New York City; Food Bank For NYC; New York Cares; Los Angeles Regional Food Bank; Harvesters – The Community Food Network, Kansas City, MO."
Other charities helped by the couple include "The Store, Nashville, TN; Helping Harvest, Reading, PA; Rhode Island Community Food Bank; Feeding America; ASPCA; Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library; Grammy In The Schools; Education Through Music, New York, NY; Answer The Call, New York, NY and Musical Mentors, New York, NY."
