During those times, Verona tends to support the victim more than she calls out the one doing the harm. See the case of Avery dealing with Declan (11.10) or the goblin Milly bound in the Judge AU vision (arc 19ish). Sometimes, this means she will leave the situation with the victim or come back and sneak her way in to help later. She actually doesn't react all that strongly if the person being harmed is herself, like when Declan was sexually harassing her (11.10).To the extent that she actively confronts the one doing the harm, it's usually to enforce specific behavior from them in the moment, such as dousing Edith with lemonade to stop her from harassing Matthew (15.1), telling Jen that she will do something if Jen slaps her or Gillian again (20.d), or demanding that Grayson let McCauleigh go (21.10). In these cases, she swore quite a bit, but the swearing wasn't really at them so much as it was the situation. With all these cases, it's notable to me that she is willing to use or threaten the use of Practice to get the desired behavior in the moment. These are later in Pale, so for fic purposes it's worth noting that she might not do precisely these things if she doesn't get to the same confidence that she has by mid and late Pale.Overall, Verona doesn't conceptualize harm as systemic, or generally as bigger than interpersonal relationships. She's intensely focused on the personal scale, and how people are acting within it. Despite that, she's pretty vague and simplistic when describing why she feels it's important that people act a certain way. Saying that "people suck," that a certain action "isn't very cool," that "this sucks, you’re perpetuating suckage." She doesn't have the language for clear moral reasoning.To close off, here's a passage from 15.1 that exemplifies Verona's approach to supporting people who have been hurt by others:“Matthew,” Verona said. “I get it, okay? I get it. People can be really good at sucking, sometimes. So… just say yes? And if you want a distraction, I can be distracting. If you want quiet solidarity, I can rock quiet solidarity. If you want to let the Doom out and tear down half the hospital, then I’ll cover the part where we get innocents free and clear and you can do that. And if you want to vent, I can hear you out and nod along.” Note that this is very victim focused, on a friend-to-friend basis, and she offers to do basically anything other than extended verbal support where she has to do a lot of the talking.sunlit-skycatGenerally, when defending people, Verona does not do things like calling the aggressor names, insulting their personal traits, that sort of thing. At most, she'll insult their actions. She might do things like petty physical slights or threatening force to get the desired behavior out of the aggressor. See how she deals with Edith trying to talk to Matthew in 15.1: “Let’s go together,” Verona told him.  “Edith, go home.” “I’d appreciate the chance to talk more with my husband.” Verona took three steps forward, then tossed out the contents of her drink. Edith reacted late.  Lemonade iced tea splashed her, face to waist.  Two ice cubes clattered to the sidewalk. “Who gives a fuck what you appreciate?” Verona asked.  “You helped kill John.  You guys broke my best friend’s heart.  You ruined so much.” Edith stood there, dripping. Verona’s hand twinged.  She felt like a cramp was coming on.  She didn’t want it to be now. “Cold and wet?” Verona asked.  “I remember you hated that.” “Fine,” Edith said.  “Maybe I deserved that.” “Maybe?” “But I still need to talk to Matthew.” “Would you like to be bound, Girl by Candlelight?” Verona asked.  “I can bind you by words.” “I’m secure in a hallow I’ve occupied for nearly a decade.” “Want to try?” Verona asked.  “Edith James, Girl by Candlelight, I name you boun-” Matthew set a hand on Verona’s shoulder.  His fist closed, bunching up the sweater there. She stopped.During all of this, the closest thing Verona does to a "reason you suck" speech is a simple recitation of actions Edith has performed, to support the idea that Edith's requests should not be granted just because she asks for them in calm, reasonable-seeming language. She escalates to force (throwing the lemonade and starting a binding) only when Edith persists in trying to talk to Matthew. Then she stops when Matthew seems uncomfortable with her continuing that any further.It's notable here that Verona does not attempt to win the war of words, persuade Edith of her wrongness, or mark some moral victory here. She's not a Tattletale-type who ferrets out people's insecurities and taunts them over it. She's here to support Matthew in his desire not to be alone with Edith, and her actions start and stop at that.There is one notable exception to Verona avoiding ad hominem attacks, and it is Charles. Specifically, her calling him variations of a fat sloppy cock across much of late Pale. It's iconic, but it doesn't match her previous pattern. See this as an example from 22.6:“Charles is a dick, Lis. He’s not just a wang of a man. I am talking slimy, sloppy, fat dick. I’m talking creatine-injected, crusty-under-the-rim, too-fat to fit in a hole, gross, unappetizing, have-to-sit-to-piss, never-hard-again ruined slug type dick, Lis.” (Pale 22.6)This is a vicious insult of Charles that attacks him for metaphorical physical deformities. It's quite different from how Verona talks about other people who have hurt those she loves. So what makes this different?The first time anything like this phrase (fat sloppy cock) comes up, it's in 20.5. And it turns out, it's not purely a Verona creation.“If Charles is building this off his own experience…” Lucy said, trailing off, searching for a way to phrase it.  Knowing Charles was listening.  “How does he reconcile the fact he still sucks… so much.” “So much,” Verona said. “He was forsworn, and he went through shit as a result and he thinks that made him good?  Or great?  He… really really sucks.” “Sucks fat sloppy cock,” Verona said.  “The kind of fat sloppy cock that should not be sucked, you know?” Not how Lucy would’ve phrased it, but she nodded with emphasis.  “He is the sort of fat sloppy cock that should not be sucked.  Metaphorically.  Because he sucks so much.  Fuck, I hate him.”It starts with Lucy trying to find the language to describe Charles' moral failings, and Verona offering words to supplement it. Notably, Verona's initial version is still attacking Charles's metaphorical actions, and Lucy is the one who turns it into a metaphor for his entire being. For Verona, saying this becomes an extension of supporting Lucy.“Sloppy,” Avery supplied. Verona remembered talking a lot about how Charles was a fat sloppy cock, and repeating that a lot in hopes of getting Lucy to crack, and she had to fight to keep from smiling or laughing to herself. (21.2)Verona keeps repeating the fat sloppy cock imagery as a sort of in-joke, even when Lucy isn't around. The phrase has turned into a memory of how she helped Lucy at one point, and that's the value it has to Verona, which is why she keeps repeating it so much in late Pale despite not insulting people through ad hominem much otherwise.1030
