Stepped on a wasp - why does this hurt so bastard much!?
Stepped on a wasp - why does this hurt so bastard much!?

I've been stung a few times before and while painful it's not much more than a nuisance, but this is on another level. It got me right under the big toe, and it was stuck there while I tried to shake it off so it must have pumped in a ton of venom. It's not even particularly red or swollen, but it's been 2 hours of feeling like there's a red hot electrified needle jabbing me repeatedly. Bastard must have hit a nerve or something. I can bend my toe now, so that's an improvement at least!

UPDATE: 5 hours after being stung, it still hurts like a bastard. Not the writhing in pain levels of the first hour, but a steady burning. It seems to be aggravated by heat, which is just great in this weather!

Jesus what an idiot. It doesn't matter what lane the lorry is in or how slow they're going, any time you undertake you're asking for trouble. Obviously you should check before moving left on a motorway, but no car has any right to be passing you on the left, so it's not hard to see why you wouldn't notice, especially when they're going at near light speed.

Why not just overtake in the right side lane? And if he was aiming for the turn-off, then there's no need to be going that fast. Utter dickhead.

I got married that summer too, after the floods luckily! I think we had the one bright day in August.

I remember in 2006 we had a hot summer and all the fans sold out, so next year the shops piled them high. Turned out to be the summer 'Umbrella' was number one, and rained for months 😄

My dad used to tell a story about a friend of his who was bitten by a UK badger and they couldn't get it to let go, I think they had to bash it in the head repeatedly with a spade to get it off in the end. Always been a bit scared of them after that!

Part of my finger tingles, but only when pressed or flexed
Part of my finger tingles, but only when pressed or flexed

Male, 45, non-smoker, thin build. This has been going on for about 5 weeks. It happens on my left index finger, on the underside, just above the last knuckle on the left side. It's not there all the time, but seems to be triggered by pressure e.g. picking up a round tin so my finger extends and presses against it. Once triggered I usually notice it on and off throughout the day and can trigger it by flexing my finger.

The tingle is mild rather than an electric shock feeling, but it radiates a sort of tickly discomfort into my arm and up to my face, although this happens less lately. There's no numbness, weakness or loss of dexterity as far as I can tell.

Two days before it started, I dropped a supermarket self scan handset and tried to catch it, and it hit the affected finger, causing a lot of pain and some bleeding around the base of the nail on the left side. Could this have damaged the nerve in some way? My fingers are very thin, so there's not much padding to protect them. There's no visible bruising or swelling now.

I've asked various chatbots and they all say localised nerve irritation is likely the cause, but as usual when I dig into the sources I can never find anything that states it so definitively. I'm just looking for some confirmation that this is likely the cause so I can stop stressing out about it and thinking the worst!

Has anyone else had a Mii stuck as permanently sad?
Has anyone else had a Mii stuck as permanently sad?

On my wife's island, one of her Miis got rejected twice and got the sadness bar. After she got it down, the Mii stayed sad, and has been like that for nearly a week. It has a happiness bar and levels up as normal, but is permanently in the 'ugh so sad' mood and won't talk to or interact with anyone.

Just wondering if this is a bug or if it will snap out of it at some point? Anyone seen anything similar?

Haha wow, I'd never heard of Gravity's Rainbow, now I want to read it. Also, from the bottom of that webpage: Last modified: Sun Apr 9 02:22:10 1995. An artifact from the early net!

Jesus fuck this film, my grandparents would always put a video of it on when we came round and I used to dread it. The scene where the rabbits are buried and trapped in the burrow, packed together trying to get out, and it just zooms in on their bloodshot eyes haunts me to this day.

From that wiki:

During an expedition in 2021, PST found the body of a caver, who died exploring on his own, at −1,100 meters (−3,600 ft). He was later identified as Sergei Kozeev, who left his home in Sochi (Russia) on 1 November 2020 and began descent into Veryovkina, where he spent around a week at a −600 meters (−2,000 ft) permanent camp. Then he continued his descent down to technically challenging parts at −1,100 meters (−3,600 ft) where he got stuck, and died of hypothermia. He did not bring stirrups necessary to climb out of the lower, perpetually wet, regions of the cave.

What a way to go, bloody hell....

Strange numb/swollen feeling near top of left index finger - does anyone else get anything like this?
Strange numb/swollen feeling near top of left index finger - does anyone else get anything like this?

I've been having a hard to describe feeling on my left index finger, near the tip but on the side facing my thumb. It's a sort of mild numbness, but it also feels like it's slightly swollen under the surface. I notice it most when something brushes gently over the area, like the back of my phone or clothes. There's no pain, and squeezing it hard has a less noticeable sensation than a gentle touch. It's cropped up for a few days at a time, a few months apart, for a few years, but now my health anxiety has decided to latch onto it and I'm noticing it a lot. it doesn't help that I'm constantly rubbing it to check it!

I don't know if it's relevant but the vein that runs up that side of my finger is bigger and more noticeable than the equivalent on my right hand, but not in a way which is concerning. It just feels like it could be pressing on the nerve or something.

I'm male, 44, skinny, don't smoke or drink, right-handed, been taking 20mg omeprazole for 2 months for heartburn, and 1000 IU vitamin D3 for a few years. No other health conditions that I know of besides anxiety.

I've looked all over the internet and I can't find anything similar being described, which is driving me crazy. ChatGPT is confident that it's just nerve irritation, but I don't know where it's getting that from.

I play my Switch 2 quite a lot, and the left trigger presses into my finger around where the feeling is, so it is possible that some sort of irritation has built up.

Just wondering if anyone thinks this could be a type of RSI, or has experienced anything similar?

For those wondering, it's orange jelly, custard and chocolate angel delight, layered with lasagne sheets that were pre-cooked in sugar water. Topped with squirty cream and a crushed flake. I came up with this about 30 years ago in Home Economics, but never got to make it for some reason. But sometimes, if you have a dream you just have to get out there and make it a reality.

It was genuinely quite nice, but I don't think the pasta really added anything that a triffle without it would have lacked!

So if there was some disaster and western Europe became hard to live in, and you had to relocate to an Islamic country, would you be willing AT ALL to let of your culture and integrate into theirs? Argh, wish I'd turned off updates. It's SO bad. The radar viewer was amazing on the old app with how easy it was so scroll back and forth, and the lovely haptic buzz as it moved. I counted, and it now takes 87 laborious swipes to scroll through the 5 day forecast! Just insane how bad it is. Also, they've added landscape mode, but at least on my normal sized phone, the UI elements completely cover the map in that mode.

The only positive is the warning view is a bit better, and you can see the risk matrix values without having to click through to the website.

Just looks like a normal contrail that's caught the light in a strange way, it doesn't really look like it's moving at all. If it was some sort of debris or a plane coming down it would be visibly moving. Certainly it's not anything from space.

Unfortunately the really impressive comets are usually newly discovered ones that get close enough to the the sun to really melt and leave a big tail, but they tend to come out of the blue with at most a year or two from discovery to display, so it's hard to say. The upside of that is one could be discovered tomorrow, the downside is it could be 100 years...

This is cool, where are the articles pulled from? Are they AI summarised from something longer? They're all the same length and tone, so I assume they're not the original articles?

Also, it's kind of horrible to see that 40 years ago is within my lifetime! I went in expecting news from the 60s haha.

Huh so that's what it's called. My son knew the alphabet and was reading a few words a couple of months before he turned 2, just picked it up from the subtitles on CocoMelon and Blippi. I also learned to read early without anyone teaching me, my dad would read me Winnie the Pooh and one day I just realised I could read it myself. I've always found the concept of 'learning to read' a strange one because of that!

I always know when summer is over when the temperature in the house drops below 20C. That's the boundary between wearing nothing but shorts, and full on clothes, socks and hoodie, the lot. If it was up to me the heating would go on and keep it at 20C all the time, but that would cost a fortune, so we tend to live in about 16-18C for half the year.

So these are about 30 years old, I found them in the attic recently. I guess I had a pretty dark imagination as a kid but I'm not actually a psychopath! I made a couple like this years ago

Downside-Up is a gravity flipping one where going through pipes flips the gravity. It was an absolute nightmare to make, because each sub-world had to be identical but flipped vertically. Add in trying to include puzzle logic and it almost broke me! The code is S71-JXX-5JG.

A Mario Between Worlds is a light/dark parallel word level, again it was horrific to make! The gimmick here is that half way through you hit a switch and release the evil into the light world, and have to re-traverse the level with everything changed. I think I pitched the puzzle elements a bit high because not many people finish it. The code is P72-L9V-FYF.

For me the biggest gamechanger would be a simple coding layer. It could be a third option after blocks and sounds, and use a drag and drop system similar to the nodon in Game Builder Garage. You could define an area and give it a condition, eg IF/WHILE x object enters, and link it to an event, eg spawn x object here. Add options to turn pipes or burners off and on, maybe even move blocks, include controller inputs as starting conditions, and the possibilities would be virtually endless. I don't think they'll do it unfortunately, not because it would be hard to do or learn, but because you'd quickly end up with levels that bear no resemblance to Mario at all. I'd love it though.

Because the purpose of most of those sites is not to provide you with news, but to get you to view their site and generate them ad revenue. Hence clickbait headlines that promise something juicy, but only if you click through to the site. Is it possible to get hayfever, but with NO runny nose or itchy eyes?
Is it possible to get hayfever, but with NO runny nose or itchy eyes?

Since late February I've had some combination of stuffed up nose (not totally blocked, just more than it should be), partially blocked ears, gummy throat, dry cough and feeling like there's something stuck in my throat, plus general heavy headedness. It started when the tree pollen started, and was mostly better during a week in Tenerife, and at Butlins where presumably there's less pollen than in the middle of the country where I live. It seems to have become worse since the grass pollen season ramped up too.

The thing is, when people talk about hayfever it's always a runny nose and itchy eyes, and I don't have either of those. I'm sure there are worse ways to be ill, it's just a background level of grottyness the grinds me down after a while!

I spoke to a GP last week because of the never ending cough and lump in the throat feeling but he wasn't too concerned, and has given me Fexofenidine anti-histamine tablets to try, and Beconase spray. Been taking them for 4 days and my head maybe feels a bit lighter, but it's not been a miracle cure or anything. Still got the dry cough which is the most annoying bit.

Does anyone else get hayfever like this?

I doubt they'd do it, but I'd love a sort of fusion with Game Builder Garage. Imagine all the items and options of Mario Maker, with a nodon based coding layer. It would be so easy to do things like 'if Mario stands here, spawn x enemy here' or 'if x is pressed, reverse gravity'. You'd pretty much be able to make your own games within the Mario engine.

Years ago the chicken bakes were different in Wales, they were a chicken and veg type thing, instead of the chicken-only creamy sauce things they have now. They were much nicer to be honest, the sauce alone in the ones they have now isn't enough to cover the taste of cheap chicken.

The custard slices used to be absolutely gigantic in Wales too, but they standardised them the bastards. I think these were both things that were standard to the local bakeries in the area, but once Greggs had crushed them there was no point keeping them the same I guess.

Absolutely love it. People complain it makes them tired, but I get cold easily so I find the summer is the only time of year I have energy to spare, the rest of the year it goes on keeping warm. I'd be quite happy if it was 25+ every day of the summer.

I'll admit my opinion might be different if I lived in a stuffy flat in London or something, but I work from home in an airy house with a garden so there's no downside to the heat for me personally.

Unsettling encounter with a squirrel
Unsettling encounter with a squirrel

Yesterday me and my daughter were at a local pond catching tadpoles and small fish with some seaside nets on sticks. We'd been there a while when I heard a weird huffing noise and looked down to see a squirrel coming right up to us on the bit of decking we were standing on. It looked odd, kind of sweaty if you can imagine a squirrel looking sweaty, and making a wheezy grunting sound. We were both in shorts so didn't want to get scratched or anything, so we jumped away from it. I shouted at it and waved the net at it, but it just came towards me as I backed away, and wouldn't back off even when I poked it with the net. After circling around a few times I scooped it up in the net and chucked it into the bushes, hoping it would get the message, but it came straight back out and headed for me again.

My daughter was getting a bit freaked out by it by this point, so I got it in the net again and lobbed it right into the reeds around the pond. We quickly tipped our fish back, grabbed our stuff and got out of there, but as we went through the gate we looked back and it came out of the bushes again, and started crawling towards us like a little furry teminator. At this point we ran for it, up the path and back to the car. It's a long straight path up a hill and I kept expecting to see it advancing after us, but luckily it didn't.

It sounds daft, but it was genuinely quite scary because of how relentless and unafraid it was. It wasn't attacking, just moving at a steady speed towards me and making its weird noise. Not sure what I would have done if I didn't have a net on a long pole to catch it in! I suppose it might have fried its brain in the heat or something, but I kept thinking it could be infected with bird flu so I really didn't want it scratching either of us.

I find it's best for improving overall strength and mobility. I started playing when I hit 42. I wasn't overweight, but not especially fit either as my job involves sitting down all day. I'd noticed I was starting to walk up stairs instead of running, and was making the 'old man noise' getting up off the sofa. Playing Ring Fit fairly regularly has really improved things, and I feel a lot less old and knackered these days.

Michael Marshall Smith. His early stuff like Spares and Only Forward are scrappy, but absolutely brilliant, bizarre books. His later stuff written as Michael Marshall and Michael Rutger is all perfectly entertaining, but never really re-capture that spark.

David Mitchell is similar, Cloud Atlas is just transcendently brilliant, but his last few books he seems to be disappearing up his own arse a bit with all the interconnections and meta-story.

Iain M Banks wrote a cool novel about this concept, the name escapes me now. The civilization in the story have the tech that would allow them to travel interstellar in a normal galaxy, but their whole solar system is floating a billion light years from anything, out in intergalactic space, and they know it.

Not old, but in my 40s, my dad had me late in life, so his parents were born in the 1910s/20s. To be fair, they were middle class so they weren't eating turnips and lard except for during WWII, but for many if not most people life was tough and they didn't live healthy lives at all by our standards.

さんがコメントしました

They lived off turnips and lard, got rickets, died in their 10s of millions to the Spanish Flu and looked ancient by the time they were 45. There's nothing wrong with a healthy lifestyle but our grandparents generation did not have one.

Yeah this. My grandparents would always put a video of Watership Down on when we came around and I hated it. I'd usually go and hide in the toilet when it got to that scene. The whole film is gruesome, but that scene in particular is the sort of horror that crawls under your skin and lays eggs.

さんがコメントしました

I think some people just have the knack for it. My dad could play anything, guitar, violin, sitar, piano, trumpet, accordion, banjo and probably others I didn't know about. He wasn't a virtuoso at any of them, but he was pretty decent, I don't think he practiced a huge amount. It just came naturally to him.

I worked in a lab testing food samples, it was low paid and boring and I hated it. There was an interview for a data analyst type role in the office so I applied for it. I didn't get it, but the head of IT told me he was impressed that I figured out pivot charts in the practical part despite not having any experience with excel. That would have been it, but a girl in the lab told me to email him and ask if they could let me do some work experience. I would never normally have the confidence to do that, but she persuaded me. I was 35 and stuck in a job with no real prospects, now 8 years later I'm a senior web developer at the same company getting paid well for a job I love.

I've been playing for about 15 days, definitely noticing a difference in terms of not being stiff etc, but I pulled something nasty doing the bow-pull exercise today. My back was hurting a bit but I thought I could push though it, big mistake. Suddenly my upper back cramped up, and now it hurts all the way around my chest and back when I move too much. Going to have to take a few days off I think. Ironic really, because avoiding constantly pulling muscles in my back doing trivial things is the reason I want to put on a bit of muscle in the first place!

I worked in the Merry Hill branch for 8 months back in 2007-8, the customers were absolutely the worst part of the job, stinky mouthy wankers the lot of them. Never had any problem with management or the other staff though, I think it helped that we all started together when the shop opened and put all the shelving together etc so we made a nice team. I liked the fact that management weren't at all precious about the customers and so long as you didn't actually swear in their faces it was fine to be a bit of a dick to them and make their lives harder if they were being a pain.

As someone currently trying to develop a fairly simple Android/iOS app using MAUI I'd say because it's a buggy pile of crap haha. Everything is a chore, even something as simple as having the keyboard close when you press the Done button after typing requires a hacky workaround.

This was around 2008, after university. We moved into my wife's parent's house for free for a couple of years, both had pretty crappy jobs(CEX shop, Support Worker). Basically worked and slept, didn't have/buy anything fun, saved almost everything we earnt. I inherited about 10K during that period which certainly helped. After 2 years we were able afford the deposit on a 120k 3 bed semi in beautiful Wolverhampton, which we had to extensively redecorate mostly on our own. There's no shortcut, you just have to knuckle down and get through it. We were very lucky that her parents could afford for us to live with them without asking for rent though, if you have to pay rent while saving it must be a nightmare.

A couple of weeks after starting university the group in my flat wanted to watch a film on a little portable TV I'd brought with me, Hedwig and the Angry Inch I think. For some reason it would only play in black and white, it never did that before, and never did it since. Me and one of the girls couldn't be bothered to watch it in black and white, so we took a bottle of booze and sat under the stairs of the building. One thing led to another, and 20 years later we're still happily married.

Thanks for giving mine a go. Bit late now, but I've thought of a good way to explain how the controls work. Basically pressing right moves the ball clockwise, and left moves it anticlockwise. That's why, if you're at the bottom in the 6 o clock position, pressing right moves you to the left, which is clockwise around the sphere. It's a shame it's confusing but I don't think there's any other way it could be done within the limits of getting the gravity system working.

I just played this after hearing the guy talking about it on the stream for that competition. It's absolutely spectacular, having made a few much simpler things in GBG my brain hurts just thinking about the work that must have gone into this. Easily the best thing I've seen in GBG, I hope you get 1st place in the contest.

This is loosely based on the Gamecube classic. Switch your sphere between black and white at any time. Collect matching colours to score and avoid the opposite colour, but the opposite colour will home in on you. Skim the opposite colour to build your charge, when fully charged unleash a powerful Flare Blitz or restore one hit point. Chaining collections builds a score multiplier, but as your score increases, so does the difficulty. Survive as long as possible and see how much you can score! Personally I can't get more than a few thousand, but I'm actually terrible at bullet hell type games so I'm sure someone else could do better. I'd be interested to know if it's actually fun to play, I spent so long making it I've lost all perspective!

I've seen a similar thing. Just a single screen arena with walls around it, and a player controlled sphere moving around. Sometimes if you bash up against the wall or flip out of the arena off screen, the same thing happens with the shadows that you're describing. I don't know what causes it though, my guess is something strange is going on which is using up CPU power and causing the shadows to drop in resolution.
