Hi Jon, Thanks for getting back to me - no worries at all. I completely understand that legacy X11/Motif font handling is notoriously difficult to work with. Btw I really like how the default sharp, non-anti-aliased fonts look, I'm just kinda looking for customized fallback system. I’ll leave this ticket open as a reference point in case anyone decides to tackle the font system or XFT rework in the future. Thanks for keeping CDE alive and for all your hard work on the project!

Yeah, sorry about that - I think fonts are one of the weakest aspects of this CDE. Unfortunately I don't know enough about them to be able to help here. Hopefully someone more versed can provide some help, or even better a reworked font handling system in CDE, like XFT or something similar.

I checked if all required packages had been installed and found the motif package had not been installed and was not available in Ubuntu's repository; however, the motif package is an umbrella for a group of other packages I was able to install individually - libmotif-dev, libmotif-common, and libxm4. After getting these installed, I was able to successfully able to build and install CDE.

I just made a crucial discovery: the lucida bright font that partially worked was a system-provided font (likely a legacy core X font). However when I load user-imported TrueType Lucida Bright Font , it behaves exactly like the lucida sans typewriter mentioned earlier, the text simply disappears completely.

Using only a CJK font (MingLiU) as the default: Result: The CJK characters fail to display and instead turn into a jumbled mix of Latin characters.

Very good spirit to maintain this desktop environment and it must be quite a huge work. It's not difficult to add apps to the apps manager but a bit difficult to link icons to them. An occasion to look at MWM and related projects (EMWM), Xresources and read man pages also. So it's really unix ! Well a bit of nostalgia and it made me rediscover old X tools like xclipboard.

When I was young, I could not afford any commercial UNIX workstation running CDE. I used to dream about CDE while typing away on MS Word on Windows 3.11. It's amazing to see how much desktop scene has evolved and CDE has aged quite well

Really good to see CDE still working. My Raspberry Pi now looks just like an old HP 9000 or RS/6000. Excellent.
