About
Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer refers to a meme format that negatively compares fans of a certain thing to fans of another thing, usually ironically, referring to the latter as "enjoyers" or "appreciators." The format is based on photographs of two people who fall within the archetypes of Soyboy and a Chad and bears resemblances to Virgin vs. Chad and Yes Chad meme formats.
In February 2021, the format gained association with the song "Can You Feel My Heart" by Bring Me the Horizon.
Origin
The format utilizes two photographs: a still image from a video by YouTuber James' YouNiverse (shown below, left) and a viral photograph of Iranian influencer Saman Ghasemzadeh, a member of the informal "Rich Kids of Tehran" clique, who had supposedly undergone plastic surgery to attain chiseled facial features (also known as Zara Boss; shown below, right). Both photographs saw use as reaction images online,[1][2][3] being associated with the Soyboy and Chad archetypes, respectively.
On September 30th, 2019, Twitter[4] user @ocenotvevo posted the first meme that combined the images, captioning them "Average space travel enthusiast" and "average flat earther." The post received over 120 retweets and 600 likes in one year.
Spread
On October 18th, 2019, an unknown Redditor[9] posted the earliest found derivative of the format, a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure meme, to /r/Animemes (shown below, left).
The format did not see further spread until on November 2nd, 2019, iFunny[5] user breastwart posted the first viral derivative version of the format, changing Chad's caption to "average ocean appreciator." The meme (shown below, right) gained over 2,000 smiles in nine months and received viral spread online with multiple reposts on iFunny,[6][7] Facebook, Tumblr[8] and Twitter in the following months.
Prior to June 2020, the format saw limited spread online, with several viral examples being posted on Facebook[10][11] during that period. On June 9th, Twitter[12] user @snackoon posted a version of the meme captioned "weed smokers" and "bread and oil enjoyers" (shown below). The Post received over 270 retweets and 700 likes and was widely circulated online in the following weeks.
Prior to July 10th, an unknown user posted a version of the meme that humorously compared "apple eaters" and "pear enjoyers" (shown below).[15] The meme received viral spread with multiple reposts on Facebook,[12] Twitter,[13] Reddit[14] and other platforms in the following days.
Following the viral spread of the meme, the format gained viral spread online, with multiple notable examples being posted on all major online platforms starting in late July 2020.
Can You Feel My Heart Edits
"Can You Feel My Heart" is a 2013 song by British metalcore band Bring Me the Horizon. In January 2021, the song gained popularity on TikTok as a sound effect in videos and was later used in Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer memes.
On January 25th, 2021, TikTok[22] user @urticatesatr (Gibberish.bruh) posted the earliest meme based on the format, a Godzilla vs. Kong meme (reupload shown below), with the post gaining over 323,000 views and 62,900 likes in two months. On January 26th, iFunny[16] user TheBertiestBertoftheBerts made the earliest found repost of the video. Also on that day, Twitter[17] account @TheFunny_mp4 reposted the video, with the meme gaining over 467,000 views, 8,200 retweets and 46,900 likes.
On February 7th, 2021, content creator Socialism Done Left made a version of the meme that gained over 190,000 views on YouTube[18] and 134,000 views on Twitter[19] in one month (shown below). The video features sped-up video "itzmefraz episode 7" by YouTube[23] user itz me Fraz as "fan" and a slideshow of GigaChad images as "enjoyer." Also on the same day, Socialism Done Left uploaded a template for the meme to Twitter[20] and Google Drive.[21]

Itz Me Fraz' Video
The clip used as "fan" is a sped-up version of December 2018 video "itsmefraz episode 7" by YouTuber[23] and Instagram[24] user itz me fraz. In the video, itz me fraz complains about his videos being deleted from Instagram and jokes that he will be changing the style of his videos. He then proceeds to showcase how his videos will be styled from now on, cursing at the camera (video shown below). The video did not see popularity until it's use in the meme format, and gained over 130,000 views on YouTube as of July 15th, 2021 (Instagram post no longer available).

People here took the appearances too seriously early on in this meme's life, but I think it's evolved into something funnier than "thing I don't like vs thing I like". The subjects are more absurd/less serious and there's been post-ironic instances of the base meme itself being modified or even re-animated/replicated with external assets (e.g. average enjoyer fan vs average fan enjoyer). Plus, it helps that I like Bring Me the Horizon and the accompanying song.

I swear, everytime I come back to KYM all I see is people prematurely whining about every single meme, justified or not.

here's the thing about this meme though;
i don't see this meme as another "thing i like vs thing i don't like" meme because if you change the subject to be similar (like the fandom), the point still get across;
the left soyjack is an exaggerated portrayal of a fan who deliberately put themselves into an obsessive attraction towards the subject matter, shown to be unkempt, overtly excited, and very detached to the societal interactions because they think highly of themselves, as the fan being surrounded and cluttered by the subject matter. meanwhile, the enjoyer shown to be lean and clean in an exaggerated manner, but clearly shows that the enjoyer doesn't need anything else to be inserted in the picture because the enjoyer likes it and they enjoyed it without going further into the rabbit hole. changing the enjoyer image with gigachad would still work because the gigachad shows a calm composure that still defines him as someone who enjoy things.

a big fan of something doesn't always enjoy or like what the subculture has provided in the recent times (like the Sequel Trilogy), often sighs in disappointment, yet still cling into that sliver of hope that maybe the thing they big fan of finally bring something good and enjoyable to the table. the enjoyer of a subject matter liked it and enjoyed it as it's due. you could say it's sounds like a lowest common denominator comment, but if they don't like it nor enjoy it, why bother getting to see it? James Rolfe shows that he can be a fan and an enjoyer at the same time, showing that despite he enjoy things he watch most of the time, he still has the capability to tell what he doesn't like and bring up the necessary criticism with cold, clean vision, as he had the guts to not going to watch the Ghostbusters 2016 because he doesn't like nor enjoy the trailer and moves on afterward.

This thing is supposed to ridicule the "fan" and glorify the "enjoyer" because he's supposedly more attractive but, fuck, the fan is definitely the more attractive one. Not actually attractive per se, but at least the fan looks like a real person, instead of the mockery of a human face that excessive plastic surgery has turned the enjoyer into.

Like the Virgin vs. Chad meme (which this basically just seems like a rehash of tbh), it's funny when its ironic/not really serious, but then some people take it seriously and ruin it.

What's even worse than a toxic fanbase? Gatekeeping disguised as a low-effort meme. Goodness, I've seen plenty of gatekeeping during my travels in the wide world of music, but this is one of the most pathetic yet demeaning at the same time.

What I love about these is that it's another me good you bad meme but with emphasis on the fact that it's just the same thing with different wording in most cases. We have finally broken internet humor down to its essential core.

idk several other memes started as ironic but devolved into being the exact same thing in the end.

At least this has a kind of ironic absurd energy, as opposite of previous "soyjak bad nordic good" template. Still kinda sad we're recycling the same meme over and over though.

If the point is to compare invested fans to casual enjoyers, then why are they using different subjects for each?
That makes it a non-comparison because we aren't given any characterization for the occasional enjoyers of the thing associated with the ugly guy nor for the hardcore fans of the thing associated with the handsome guy.
You can compare active fans of Thing A to both simple enjoyers of Thing A and to active fans of Thing B, but you can't compare active fans of Thing A to simple enjoyers of Thing B and get any sort of meaningful contrast out of it.
