When did the "activist" game developer mindset start?
Most strange phenomena can be pinned down to a single date or title, such as the first game to feature a turrent section, or the first game to feature quick-time events (I'm glad those two features are gone). So, what was the first game where the developers had a "activist" mindset, where they didn't care about their customers at all and actively fought against them brazenly. When did this terrible, narcissistic mindset start, and what's the first game to be plagued by it?

I can pinpoint such a mindset with movies, with Ghostbusters 2016. That was the first movie I saw where the director, the actors, and even the studio funding it actively went against the customers and fought against them so openly. It was pretty weird, which made it satisfying when the movie flopped and it sequel was cancelled.

But what about games? What was the first game to be plagued with the "activist" mindset that ruined it?

Then it should be no problem if a character stops 'representing you' or you stop 'seeing yourself' in a character because they changed their sexual orientation.

It is not a problem to me personally. I'm not the one out here pretending DEI and the push to represent certain demographics above others doesn't have any type of impact on the trend of gaming or that its not "woke" ideology.

I'm the one saying you are weird if you need validation from a video game.
I will say however, I am bored with the AAA over correction where almost every notable game features a woman or a woman of colour or a gay woman of colour. We had a push for diversity in gaming and now in 2026 I'm sitting here wishing we had diverisity in our AAA games. :steambored:

Look at the history of the FPS genre. The common logic from these higher ups back then were FPS games only appealed to men. So make them only for men. CoD. Gears of War, Battlefield. Manly men doing masculine things. Muted grey colour tones because that statistically was proven to appeal more to men (guess I was one of the few who loved brighter colors). Realistic guns.

Then Overwatch came out. Bucking all these trends. More vivid colours, more character representation, unrealistic guns. It proved to these executives that women would actually play FPS games if you make your games for them too. As it had twice the female to male gender ratio over other FPS titles. After that, CoD, Battlefield, etc. They all started copying OW. Representation up the wazzu. Which can be annoying when forced and obvious. These corporate mandates. But keep in mind the mandates always existed. They just felt invisible.

Maybe the moral of the story is we're all weaker to pandering than we actually know. I for one found the whole China pandering in Hollywood movies to be cringey. Like that Transformers movie that has 1/3 the movie take place in China, or in Marvel movies where they'll put in a Chinese only scenes where the heroes are rescued by some Chinese field medic or something. I thought those things were obvious and dumb pandering. But the Chinese kind of loved it for a while. Seems people hate pandering except when it's towards them.
Gears of war isnt a FPS

Gears of war isnt a FPS

its a NPS (neck person shooter) because the Gears are 75% neck with those tree trunks sticking out of their shoulders

Then just move to the niche of your choice.
The gaming field is large. There's some dev out there catering to your specific tastes.

Bent the knee to what? KCD 2 was still a very popular title and well loved.

Making a character that wasn't gay to an optional gay in the second game. It selling or being popular doesn't make it any less true. To appeal to certain demographics something was added which based on past history likely wouldn't have been added before.
Funny how the only popular woke games are tacked onto huge franchises.. everything else it destroys.
"Woke" is in everything as it simply is about tolerance.

Also funny how popular "woke" games turned "not woke" cause anti-wokes enjoyed the games.

"That's a BINGO!" - Christopher Waltz - Inglorious Basterds.
keep in mind, that there are (national) games awards that reward "activistic/ideologic" games over quality and value
"activistic/ideologic" games that would likely not exist without massive public funding

an example for that practice is, sadly,:the
German Computer Games Award (Deutscher Computerspielpreis, DCP)
with some rare exceptions there like the award to "enshrouded" in 2025 for "Best German Game and Best Innovation and Technology"
or some kind of "tradtion" awards for anno games,....

may try to find videos about award cermony

it is debatable,
if such practices can be a help to attract developers beyond those of "activistic/ideologic/propaganda" games, a business model that relies on massive public funding

still even there this means step forward compared to demonizing of games, gamers, gaming industry with things like the so called "killer games discussion"/"killerspiele-debatte"
that went on for a long time and worked in tandem with bans of games showing violence/"violence" and censorship
whole careers are built on that demonizing

It's not like Col Landa had a good ending in the movie.

If you have to have a career on nothing more than ACTIVISM, you are nothing more than a PAWN in a chess game...

What ever happened to having CREATIVITY?! Imagination?! Huh? When did humanity go ahead and say, "F This. I'm done thinking on my own and want to be nothing more than a drone to soceity's puppetting..." When did we start giving up our QUALIA, to just give into Temptation and GREED?!

And people wonder why there is something MASSIVE on the horizon that is going to be Historical but also BIBLICAL...

If you can't see past your own NOSE of what is all going on, you are already past the point of no return...

Both were Industry Plants.

And KCD2 was NOT KCD.

The first is a GEM, and it was enjoyable, but the SEQUEL was them intentionally destroying EVERYTHING on purpose from the first one to destroy the IP.

Don't get me started on BG3...
