Backrooms

It starts off strong and for the first 70 minutes it is exactly what I wanted from it. The movie does a great job of representing the ambience that started the backrooms subculture and does an excellent job of pairing it with the dread you would feel in such an environment. All else aside, the set design and editing are superb. However, there is a specific moment where the entire momentum shifts and never quite recovers its footing. The third act clashes with everything the film was doing right and sacrifices the established tones for a plot direction that comes across as hollow and fails to follow through with it. Without spoiling anything, it attempts to add meaning to the events of the plot without actually committing to anything concrete at the overall expense of the tone and plot. Then, abruptly, it just sort of ends.

I saw someone say in a review "Falls flat in the third act", however it seemed like there was no "third act". It's almost like there was a full script, but the producer said: "there's no more budget, lets stop the movie". The ending felt like a setup for a third act, but it wasn't there! The characters however, were very well written, I was really invested in them both. Moreover the characters really connected with the idea of the Backrooms which was a nice touch. I just feel like there was no real ending to the story which wrapped up those character's story arcs. The concept is amazing and it leaves you wanting more, which is good. However the ending was just missing, a 25 minute segment of catharsis...

Just saw it in theaters, one day before global release. The visuals and scenery is amazing. The actors are fine but the lore is awfully vague. Nothing is given to the audience and they have to piece together tiny crumbs of information just to understand the film. The liminality is insane. The spaces stuck a cord with me and that's why I end up liking the movie despite the lack of a coherent story or ending. It gets a six.

I'm literally so excited to watch this in cinema as a truly fan of Backrooms clip on youtube. This is truly phenomenal adaptation, everything about it is simply an unforgettable cinematic experience I will never forget. I just love how Kane Parsons delivered a haunting and eerie backstory to it and how characters portrayed more emotion and madness to the experience. The background music, set production and how the story flows really somehow become more accurate like what Parsons had on his vision from his web series. This is one of the best psychological sci-fi horror movies I've seen in cinema this year. It was entertaining, very intriguing and will linger to you especially the last ending scene of Mary. There are so many interpretations you can get from it which made this horror movie very special and compelling.

Finally, after years of hoping for a movie I anticipated to deliver its punch, backrooms did exactly that. I'm not going to release any spoilers other than, it was exactly what I had expected under certain stipulations but, delivered its punch beautifully. A movie crafted so handsomely its almost as though I don't even need to write a review other than to say, sit down and allow these two hours of a psychological thrill ride to kick you square in the nuts in the most sinister way possible.

All in all, this movie is a gem that I am beyond confident will contend with obsession until the end days. A true masterpiece and by far the best take on the backrooms as it gets. 10/10.
