Following Sony’s announcement that it will end production of physical PlayStation game discs in 2028, several major platforms and brands have joined the online conversation.

While companies such as Domino’s and KFC responded with jokes, GOG used the opportunity to make a serious point about digital game ownership.

In an new post, the DRM-free storefront encouraged players to back up the games they purchase rather than relying entirely on online services.

“Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc, and it’s yours forever. You don’t need a storefront’s permission to play what you bought.”

Although GOG does not sell physical copies of games, its platform allows customers to download offline installers that can be stored on external drives, DVDs, or other physical media. Unlike many digital storefronts, these installers do not require users to remain connected to an online account to access their games.

By comparison, many digital platforms require account authentication or online services to access game libraries.
