Is this truly the end of compact Reddit? Such a shame…

The .i workaround stopped working about 30 minutes ago, now it just redirects to a 404 page. It gave us one extra year of compact Reddit after the shutdown of the official methods but I guess this is it.

For mobile users that use Firefox as their browser, try this extension. Seems to work well for me so far.

on each page you visit, you have to append .i to get the compact view (not old reddit, just reddit.com)

A while ago, I made a list of third-party Reddit web clients, to provide alternatives for the deprecated compact view.

With the recently instituted API limits, these are all effectively unusable.

An app would have to move from API use to scraping to continue to work, and I don't think any of the developers will bother.

Thanks for promoting my userscript in your recent post. As reddit will be pulling the plug for 3rd party apps, I decided to seek refuge on the mobile reddit website. But since the mobile website feels as buggy and sloppy as the official app, I tried to use on my phone. Problem: Elements are too small. Too many elements. Sidebar not really useful. So I wrote some userscripts to make old reddit mobile friendly and useable.

I already added multiple userscripts like Auto-Expand, which removes the thumbnails so you can view all posts expanded simultaneously, a script which adds an download button to every post, Auto-Scroll (you won't have to click the "next"-button manually) and other little extras, which you can check out on my Greasy Fork profile.

I think this is a great alternative to compact reddit. You can change the website with CSS as you wish and also play around with the thumbnail sizes if it looks too big for you. We will see when old reddit will be shut down too... until then this how I browse reddit on mobile. (P.S. you will need to install the second Reddit CSS userscript for the reddit old mobile userscript to function)

I've managed to drag myself out of Skyrim Modding Hell long enough to fix a few things in this script.

Title text should be smaller, search/submit buttons won't break on certain pages, options expandos should fit better, and text inputs should no longer extend off the page. Also, the search bar and certain videos should no longer stretch off screen. Oh, and you can actually read wiki pages now.

Issues still apparent:

• Some buttons do not fit the compact theme

• Clutter in submitted post and your own comment expandos

• Missing images for certain expando options

• Submitting a post will redirect you to the new mobile interface

• Up- or downvoting a post doesn't increment the points counter

• Search page is pretty ugly

• Missing reply-to-message option in inbox

• All post preview types show text icon

• Gallery preview controls are easy to fatfinger

• Video previews often might still be too large for device

• Loading more comments loads comments without gear expandos

I'm not about to switch back to Safari just for reddit. I was wondering if anyone had any luck finding a good alternative. I've attempted to try every browser one in the master list but I can't find one to like.

I'm posting this for the third time. Reddit removes it for inexplicable reasons and the mod is completely out of touch so reposting is my only option.

Might work for android/Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey but I'm only testing on Safari/iphone.

TehVulpez pointed out that appending '.i' to an old.reddit.com/ url still works for enabling reddit compact. The script will detect if you are on an old.reddit.com page and apend '.i' to the end of the url. Additionally, it will get all links on the page that contain 'reddit.com' and append '.i' to them. Once you are directed to an old.reddit url you should reap the benefits of the ol' reddit compact.

Obviously use the old.reddit redirect add-on if you can, kind of annoying to do on firefox.

Putting these these "My Filters" section of Ublock Origin improves the old.reddit experience.

First two block custom subreddit css, 3rd blocks subreddit header images, 4-6 block sign-in nags, 7-9 block the thread links shoved into the middle of comments for SEO. Note: Blocking CSS does not play well with the Dark Reader add-on for some reason. However if you use arcadesdude's old reddit .i URL trick Dark Reader works fine.

Old reddit still a lot worse than compact, but as far as reading posts when searching something of google its usable. A 3rd party app is ofc going to be the better option for browsing a sub.

Without compact mode, Reddit is a dystopian hell scape. Least on mobile.

So where can we go? I'm yet to find an alternative with mass and not just fellow techs. My guess is, the lack of a choice is why they have done this "Enshittification".

I kept using reddit compact from around when it first appeared, continued using it after the really bad mobile site redesign came out, and used it up until the workarounds stopped working.

Reddit compact was

• fast - pages loaded almost instantly even on my old phones from 2012 and 2016, saving me time and no doubt saving a lot of battery life

• usable- comment threads were much easier to see visually and so much easier to follow,

• clear and concise, a good user experience - in addition to being fast and responsive, it wasn't cluttered with noise and fluff and icons and nagging popups and whatever the hell is on the main mobile page that makes it feel awful to use

Compared with the current mobile site, which is:

• very slow, it takes something like 1 seconds for the page to display anything, and then 2 seconds for the "comments are loading" thing to go away and for the actual content to show up. Comment threads take like an additional second or two to expand and load, vs the near instant response for loading a thread page with the Compact view. Timing it with a stop watch, it tends to take about 5 seconds on average from clicking Go on the browser URL bar to seeing the actual content, vs <1 second total loading time of Compact. I'm testing this on a reasonably recent xiaomi phone too btw.

• harder visually to see where one comment ends and another begins due to the weird obsession modern "designers" have with making boundaries between items really faint and hard to see. also everything is eye destroying soulless bright white and ugly

• everything is absolutely cluttered with unrelated and irrelevant fluff, like unrelated advert fluff spaced in between content, avatars and icons everywhere, a "use app" nagging button at the top that never goes away, and a nagging balloon at the bottom telling me to install the "app" which also never goes away, and then ANOTHER balloon appears layering on top of that other one, telling me to put reddit on my home screen. It feels like an absolute mess and just horrible to use, it's a really bad experience.

It's much worse in pretty much every meaningful way in addition to being slow as hell.

So then let's try the "app" that they're nagging me so hard to install (which I can't even install on my 2016 phone that I still use sometimes, apparently reddit requires the latest and greatest hardware to display text & images and occasional videos)

My immediate impression is:

• Immediately on my first login here's the first thing I see: an autoplaying video advert wasting my wifi/data bandwidth as well as my battery energy in order to annoy and distract me.

• In addition to the adverts, my feed is littered with "suggested" crap that I have no interest in, it feels like at least half of the feed is "suggested" stuff that's totally irrelevant to me and adverts.

• Intentionally user-hostile abusive misfeatures: the suggestions don't give you an option to turn them off, instead, you can only choose to "see fewer posts like this".

• The layout feels like a total clusterfuck basically, crap everywhere and embedding images and stuff, vs the compact site view which was simply a list of headlines that I could visually search through quickly and choose to expand if I took an interest.

It's not as slow as the current mobile website (slower than compact still) but it's a horrible user experience.

Overall, this is another instance of something that is on my mind a lot as a computer/technology user and enthusiast, and this is the main thing I want to talk about in this post. I feel like the trend of things since about 2012 has been degradation and degeneration: things only get worse and worse. We have faster processors, more memory, more storage than 10 years ago, but you wouldn't know it because everything feels just as slow, actually even slower than it did back then. The hardware we have today is insanely powerful, and today's "designers" are somehow inventing ways to make it seem weak and underpowered.

And what are we getting in exchange for the massively increased resource use? Adverts. Nagging balloons. Popups. Slow animations. Visually distracting slow animations. Autoplaying videos that you aren't watching and don't care to see.

tl;dr The loss of reddit compact is just part of the wider trend of tech going to absolute fucking shit, driven by lazy and/or incompetent programmers and "designers" and corporate interests to push advertising on you and keep you clicking and "consuming". Like omg your phone is 2 years old, that's ancient! Why haven't you thrown it in the landfill and bought a new one already, loser nerd!

Seriously, it's the best alternative mobile app for compact users. You can get the behavior pretty close... It's a lifeline for me. Highly recommended.

I've been using compact for years...and just spent a ton of time going through every mobile app.

Boost is snappy, customizable, and allows basically the same browsing style as compact - even with some QOL upgrades. Kinda feeling lucky right now actually.

It does cost a few bucks to remove ads though. Seems worth it to me.

With the removal of compact I'm hoping to use the website less. What's everyone's recommendations for alternative sites?

Like many of you, I'm sad that .compact has been killed. There's absolutely no way I'd use the awful mobile site (that constantly pushes the app).

I've found that the works OK on mobile. Still not as good as .compact, but keeps me going a bit longer...

Granted, this isn't as good as the old compact view, but at least its not the goddamn awful mobile site with its awful load times and insistent 'use the app' pop ups. And yeah, like the title said, I think this is only available for premium subscribers (worth it I say just to not get the ads, but that's a different discussion).

Okay, back to the actual topic. At the bottom of your user preferences page there's a section about reddit themes and whatnot and the option to force ALL subreddits to use a theme of your choosing (this is the other reason why I pay for premium). The best theme I have yet to find is from .

But even after you select that option, the mobile site is still the mobile site and you'll need to actually go to old.reddit.com on mobile and THEN finally, you'll just see a view with only text.

Balls awful that this what its come to. Hope this can help some of you out.

I am wondering how feasible it is to make a browser extension workaround to restore reddit compact on mobile? I am not a programmer by training but if are others out there who are better informed please advise.

Minimalist bros! I knew this day was coming, when the damn son of bitch bloody bastards would take our beloved .compact away. There is a somewhat solution tho, and its dino RSS! Did you know each sub offers its own RSS feed? Well by god they do! Fire up your favorite reader & input (without the spaces):

You can do them separately one at a time, or combine them using "SUBNAME+SUBNAME+SUBNAME.rss" into one feed. You of course won't be able to post using this, but its something simple for browsing at least.

I just downloaded red reader. While not exactly the same, it looks passable. You can turn off inline images so they're a tiny thumbnail.

Compact mode no longer loading contend. Only says "there is nothing here". This only happens when I'm logged in but I guess the good times are over.

Is it just me or is all of the text either smaller or bigger than it used to be?

I'm using compact feature on mobile mostly to be able to save a post as PDF in a clean readable way.

So first if you know a better way to do that (post to PDF) please share,

Second while using compact i sometimes face some threads with many comments which causes some comments to be hidden and replaced by a button "continue this thread" or "load more comments",

so my question is how to get all threads/comments to be displayed fully without pressing all these buttons manually so i could print a complete PDF of the post?

I though there may be a handle or some text to add to the URL to force such view but i can't find manual or these instructions so far.

Looks like now I can edit posts on .compact view. That is nice as I no longer have to switch to new Reddit to edit posts.

Found a bug where in compact mode you are unable to edit posts unless they are top level posts.

It looks like an issue with not being able to display all the buttons as when you turn a device landscape it fixes the issue. Also explains why you see the edit button in a top level comment as there is no “parent” button.

Is this a known issue and when will it be resolved?

Hey everyone, I've been using the compact mod still very heavily as it is very simple and I come to reddit as a Content aggregator, not as a one stop shop so I like visiting other sites that people bring up. I don't really like the new mobile site myself because it's just not designed to direct the eyes easily to new content.

That being said, within the past 24 hours, I've been noticing that .compact has been erroring and moving towards the new mobile site instead. Have any of the reddit admins been trying to remove it? If that is the case I'd like to ask that we keep this around as it can cause sudden change issues to those who are sensitive to it.

I love it, it looks amazing. Without any useless features there is more space for content.

2 months later and still has not been fixed. It’s impossible to view more than a handful of top level comments.

Hi everyone! On my old Blackberry 9320 (OS Blackberry 6), with Opera mini, the additional links don't appear when I scroll down the frontpage, as in other browsers (like the native one).

Do you know any way to reach a second page, or making new links appear further down? Thanks a lot!

I love compact theme, I use it on 100% of the subreddits I visit (even on desktop).

I have some IFTTT rules for new reddit posts
(I get an email when a dota2 update is posted)

but the URL that IFTTT gives me is ""

therefore I cannot add .compact on the end (because the GET parameters have already been triggered with the ? mark)

is there an alternative command that I can add to the end of the URL seen above so that compact mode shows up?

Let me start by saying that the .compact version of the site seems well done to me, it works great on a phone and makes it easier to access comments and voting buttons.

One thing that irks me though is every time I click to a reddit page from another site, especially search results, is that it's not mobile optimized. I have to manually modify the URL in my browser to get the mobile goodness, which is often not worth the hassle. Only the front page gives me a link.

Can we make the mobile interface the default and let me opt back into the desktop version if I want to? My browser (chrome in android) in fact gives me a desktop version button, so I don't even need reddit to implement this.

I don't see an FAQ, forgive me if this has already been answered. Is there any way to remove the background color (i.e. make it all white)? I'm looking for a text only web page to view reddit.

Any way we can get a submission feature on the .compact site?

All comments have an extra "ago" listed so it will say "posted 10 mins ago ago" or "posted just now ago".

I'm probably not going to get any help, with this being a tiny sub, but maybe I will.

I always see at the bottom of some peoples posts, "Edit: blahblahblahblah" I don't see any option to do anything to edit my posts. Is it just not possible on the compact version? Or am I totally oblivious to something? Any help would..... Well.... help, I guess.

The "Open links in new window" option works perfectly in the Desktop version of the site, but all links still open in the same tab when using Compact. Is there another option I'm missing or is this feature not yet available? (Using Android 4.2.2, Chrome 31.0.1650)

I believe it happens when I scroll down and it automatically refreshes more posts. I think it only happens if I have come back to the page after a while. I just started using the compact mode 2 days ago, and it has happened 3 times. The duplicate posts are not always visible on the screen at the same time. Does anyone else get this? I will try to take a screen shot the next time they are both visible. (That way I will know that I am not seeing things...)

e.g. the button with number of comments next to each story, the help/save buttons on this submit page.

The load more comments button is particularly bad, it has a white background and white text. This has happened before...

On the register page on the compact site, under the username field it says "try anotheravailable!" which is always visible. And when you click the register button nothing happens (I'm assuming the chosen account name was taken).

It should be more clear what the problem is (the regular site marks "try another" in red) and of course it should only show the appropriate message, not both.

Just how do you get to the comments page of a post from the "other discussions" page?

Can we please make it so that reddit will automatically detect if you are using a mobile device and route you to the mobile version of the site. As it is, if you follow a posted link to reddit page, it sends you to the full version of the site.

Obviously, there should be some way to choose if you want to see the mobile version or the full version.

Oh, also, can we get a "delete comment" button?

Hasn't been working for at least a year now. I've only tried it on iOS and Windows/Chrome, but it applies to other OSes according to other posts on here. Why has this not been fixed? In case you don't know about it, the issue is that in search, the sort mode isn't clickable because it appears to be covered by the content below it. The "sort by:" text is fine, but the action functional part isn't.

It seems to be here one day, and gone the next. What is the problem?

Maybe I've just had incredibly bad luck, but in all the phones I've tried it this always happens. It also seems the nsfw reddits don't autoload at all, something that is very annoying.

Edit: A "next page" link would be nice, too. Some phones can't handle hundreds of links on one page like that, and besides, if your browser crashes going back to where you left off in the post list is hard when you have to rely on autoload.

Unless I'm mistaken, when viewing the comments on a post it is not possible to change the ordering (new/hot/top etc).

I set one story on desktop to "new" then later on I was using the mobile version and it was set to new. I had to go back to the desktop version to change it back!

Also while I'm here, any news on fixing the "Context" button?

If you go to "top" in the main menu it says "links from" just underneath but there doesn't appear to be a way to change it. Is there meant to be a select box here?

Also, the "context" button still doesn't work in messages - first click just removes the yellow highlight, second click opens the post. Is there a chance of this ever getting fixed?

I can't seem to get the links in a subreddit xml listing to point to the mobile version of the site.

For example, this works if you want links to the regular website:

If I use the xml feed from the first link above, I can replace every occurrence of with i.reddit.com and it is what I want, but I'm looking for a way to request an xml listing of subreddit items where the links point to the mobile site.

Anyone know if this is possible?

I can click the link to login, but then I get a blank screen. I've noticed that reddit has started using a SSL login system, I guess that might be causing the problem. Thoughts?

Maybe I am missing something here but is there a way to sort my subreddit list alphabetically? Not sure how it is sorted atm (by subscriber size?) but its quite a mission looking for a specific Reddit. If this can be looked at that would be fantastic.

If I click any link on the subreddit, the subreddit will quit loading. It will only load if I open links in a new tab and not on the same tab. If I refresh the page, it works, but it's tedious to be back on top of the page if your browsed pretty deep. Only the first 25 links are show and then it won't load.

• When submitting a self or link post, the subreddit selection defaults to the first subreddit subscribed alphabetically. This is contrary to the main site, where it defaults to the subreddit the user was within when he hit the submit button. This is complicated by the fact that the "save" button is ABOVE the subreddit selection area, so I commonly submit posts to 420 when I really wanted to post elsewhere

• the edit and delete post buttons don't appear after submitting. I encounter this most often when trying to rectify my incorrectly-located submissions due to the previously mentioned issue.

• sometimes the auto-next-page loader doesn't work (spinning reddit alien head at bottom of page). A related issue is that if you have read far down the page, and either back out, navigate to another page, or refresh, upon return to that page, you'll be put back at the top of the page, and have to scroll down and load all over again. can we just have a "next page" functionality? RES accommodates for this issue on the full reddit site by using page anchor attributes, but I don't know of the compatibility with mobile browsers.

• in a similar issue, it seems that on /user/ pages, the reddit alien auto-page loader appears, but after rotating, does nothing. the effect is that you can only read a limited number of any user's previous posts/submissions

• there's no way to access the subreddit "sidebar" in the compact site. oftentimes the sidebar offers crucial information relating to the subreddit, such as moderation rules, or clarification as to the purpose of the subreddit

I should note that my device is the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate SCH-i500 (VZW), running Android 2.2 "Froyo" (build EB01), and while I primarily browse reddit compact with Opera Mobile or Dolphin HD, these issues seem to be cross-platform.

All that being said, I love the compact site, and I look forward to its continued evolution.

Thank you for your work on this, I now phonebrowse reddit almost exclusively in .compact. The only remaining daily exception is the 'Edit' button, I still drop out of .compact at least once a day to fix a dumb error I noticed after hitting submit.

I recognize the danger of cluttering such a small space, but if there exists an opportunity to include this, I urge consideration.

Previously, the top bar on compact (hence named the topbar) was rendered using display: box, a very that doesn't have the best . The topbar has since been changed to use older techniques for layout, for increased compatibility.

Also, some of the small issues regarding comments, mainly the permalink buttons not working and editing not saving, have been fixed.

Finally, when browsing compact, you will now be able to see flair.

Points only seem to be shown on the first page of articles, after scrolling down to load another page the points are no longer shown.

The reddits page in compact mode only lists the first 25 subreddits, it then spins the alien head forever instead of loading the remaining ones. I've confirmed this behavior with some other users .

This is a reddit gold feature, right? It'd be awesome if the mobile site could show me which comments were posted since I last read a submission.

I'm using the android browser on HTC Inspire 4G

When I use reddit search and what to sort by relevance or new or top, the actual drop down after the colon is on a new line and falls behind the results so it's unclickable

Same for Links from: when I go to top or new sections of subreddits.

As the title indicates, if you sort a subreddit by "Top", it is not possible to change the times period for the submissions as it is obscured by the div below it. This is on Android 2.3 on a Nexus One and Sensation, using the stock WebKit engine browsers and Firefox Nightly.

Hey mobile redditors, just a few quick fixes this time.

The issue with emails (the share button) should be fixed now, emails should display as they are supposed to.

Also, as you mentioned many times, the issues with the compact and permalink buttons not pointing to the mobile interface have been fixed.

Can't seem to reach the login button on the credential pop-up. Always clicks an item underneath or recover password.

When you go to your inbox and have new comment replies, tapping the Context button just doesn't do anything apart from remove the yellow highlight.

The link is correct because holding the button and opening in a new window opens the correct place. But clicking does nothing. I'm using iPhone 3GS.

Not actually sure what it's called! But that little gear on every post that opens up to the Collapse-Reply-whatever buttons.

Okay, I get that it's a lot easier to hit than the old overlay. That's cool. But can it be moved to the top of a post instead of the bottom? Previously, the overlay would come up right there and you could collapse it. Now, you need to scroll all the way to the bottom, which is a pain in the ass when trying to collapse walls of text. Especially when you scroll all the way to the bottom to read it, have to go back to the top to hit the gear, then have to go all the way back down to hit collapse.

After editing a comment, I hit save, but it doesn't actually save my changes.

When I edit a comment, all that the save button does is toggle the comment menu.

Also when we submit a post, can you auto-populate the "reddit" field with whatever subreddit we're in at the time? It always says "reddit.com".

I primarily reddit on my phone, and I loved that when checking context in the previous version it automatically showed me the mobile version. For some reason this no longer happens. Pretty please fix this. Otherwise, great update.

First off, thanks for the update to the mobile site. I think it's a big improvement over the old one -- you've kept the clean lean look, but you've added two features I was really missing (modmail and a save button). Good job, and thank you!

For a future suggestion: it would be handy to have reddit automatically .compactify any links to within reddit. Right now, if I'm surfing .compact and I click on a link to , the page I end up on is not .compact. I then need to go to the address bar and type ".compact" at the end.

It's not a big thing to deal with, but it would be nice if the site handled it automatically.

I'm liking the ideas with the new design. However there are two key issues with it:

1. When viewing your inbox, the Context button for message replies still doesn't work for new messages. When they are yellow and you tap context, the yellow disappears but the page doesn't load until you tap it again. Actually this happened in the old design too.

2. The new buttons appear at the bottom of each post. That means if you press the gear icon, nothing appears to happen, because the buttons are off screen. The toolbar should be shown directly below the link, which is closer to the gear icon.

When you click a link it should open up in a new window. I know there's solutions to this but it makes for a frustrating user experience.

You can open in new window yourself but this entails holding the link and selecting the option to open in new window. This is painful. Particularly as the comments button is quite small for a hold press.

If you just select the link, when you click back the page loads and you lose where you were. This is also frustrating if you are 3 or 4 pages deep.

All could be solved if links opened in a new window or if you can us the option for it. This should go for links and comments buttons.

Anyway, i.reddit.com acts weird in WP7 Mango (with IE9) and desktop IE9. Since , I also tried this in Firefox (on my desktop; versions 5-8), and found different issues.

Is this because IE9/Firefox aren't being standards compliant, or is it because they're not Webkit-based? If the latter, might there be support for non-webkit browsers in the future?

the UI looks brilliant, on my iPhone 4 the buttons look a little fuzzy as they have to be upsized to be the correct size on the retina display. Also an option to automatically open links in new tabs would be awesome as well.

Not sure if it's just me who's retarded but the reason I didn't use the old mobile version was because it only gave me re front page... This is still the case with the new version it seems. The hour long bus rides back and forth to work require more than 20 links!

Any chance if getting a save option in the gear menu? This seems particularly appropriate for the mobile interface where I often browse but watch videos and such later.

Hey, I just tested the site with my LG Optimus One Android phone. when I hit the login button, it takes me back to and I have to enter again to i.reddit.com to see the site as you have designed it.

Please fix this, I will ditch the reddit is fun app if you guys fix this issue :P

When visiting the 'other discussions' page for a link, there is no way to actually navigate to the comment threads for the other submissions.

When visiting that page, I would expect that the various titles in different subreddits should link to the discussion in that subreddit, rather than to the linked item itself, as that's somewhat useless given that when I'm looking for further discussion I have most likely viewed the link already.

Several subreddits have important information and links in the sidebar. Without being able to see them, then everything is just chaos!
