Howard Chaykin making the classic Zorro into an atheist is taking me out of the story. It makes no sense for the time period and the culture.

That's just a really weird thing to shove in there, it almost reads as a spiteful retcon instead of organic dialogue between these characters. The first example isn't that bad, the second and third just reek of 2014 Reddit atheism.

I hated it. Zorro was a devout catholic. And not just him, every character is written that way. The story structure wasn’t great either. The second issue was a little better. Zorro’s Legacy by Dan Abnett and Aaron Lopresti is more enjoyable I think.

I don’t know if this is him as an atheist, New Spain was an extremely devout place where everything comes off as religious hokum to a rational man like him, I feel maybe this is more implying a man who would have inspired a Bruce Wayne type would have a more logical than creative mindset. He’s preparing himself for something very real instead of heading the warnings of a padre 🤷‍♂️ maybe we just read this scene differently, I still gotta give it a look tho it could be promising 🤞 if that last panel is supposed to be Zorro btw he looks extremely off model

I'd be interested I knowing why Chaykin decided on making Zorro an atheist. Given the period and place, it really sticks out. Reminds me of an rpg that I ran set in 1400s Transylvania. Everything is Christianity vs Islam, and this one player wanted to play a woman who worshipped ancient Egyptian deities. Stuck out like a sore thumb.

Y'know the sad thing? If the "culture warriors" hadn't blathered on all these years about "woke" where it didn't exist...legit problems like THIS would've been center stage for people to rightfully critique. But like Aesop said about crying wolf...

I felt the same way when they pulled back on Matt Murdock's catholic influences. It was a core part of his character for me, and I'm not catholic.

Like the moana statue in the back referring to your post about absolute drinkers 'review' of the moana remake. First of all, he watched Moana? Why? Imagine ignoring movies that aren't tailored towards you and just living on with your life. "Inconceivable!"
