Teddy Swims Confirms Split from Girlfriend Raiche Wright with New Song: ‘I’ve Been Going Through It’

Teddy Swims is telling his story of heartbreak through his art. 

The singer, 33, released his candid new song “Break Up in Reverse” on Friday, July 10, after he confirmed that he had split from his partner, Raiche Wright.

The two-time Grammy nominee spoke about the personal meaning behind the tune and said it “really hits home for me right now and where I am in my life,” in a Warner Records press release seen by PEOPLE.

“Upon writing this song and my next album, I’ve been going through it with my relationship with my baby’s mother coming to an end,” Swims explained. He was inspired by an old Nas song called “Rewind.” 

“So we thought, how beautiful would it be if we took the same idea but wrote it about my relationship,” Swims added.

The emotive lyrics reveal Swims’ thought process of trying to undo a failed relationship. 

“I wish we could break up in reverse / Every night would get better instead of getting worse / I’d watch you slowly slip back into my hands / Say goodbye to me in the beginning / And love me in the end,” he sings. 

The music video shows the new father surrounded by broken furniture and a smashed-up room, while looking solemn.

Over the course of the clip, which has been reversed, the room is slowly pieced back together until it is returned to its perfect state.

He also references Wright’s hometown, singing: “You’d be on your way back from Massachusetts / Bet it breaks the hearts of stars when we use ‘em as excuses.”

Swims, real name Jaten Dimsdale, and Wright were first spotted together during a Grammys pre-party in February 2024, but they had met before then. 

In a January 2025 interview with the BBC, Swims said that he and Wright had first met “a couple of Thanksgivings ago” when she came to one of his shows.

The father of one is believed to have also referenced this and sings: “Could wish upon a stranger, even though we know it’s useless / ‘Cause all I want’s the night back when your best friend introduced us.” 

In April, Swims spoke with a small group of journalists for a Q&A held at T-Mobile’s Club Magenta at Stagecoach and opened up about the source of his recent musical inspirations.

“I’m going through a bit of a situation with my baby mother,” Swims, 33, admitted of his relationship with Wright. “A little heartbreak going on.” Still, “it’s gonna be rock and roll man,” he said.

Swims and Wright welcomed their first baby, a son, in June 2025. Despite the strain in their relationship, Swims said he’s still “in a good place” — largely due to his baby boy.

“I’ve got a 10-month-old and he’s the sweetest kid in the world,” he previously said at the event. “Trying to make everything not about being a dad is the hard part because nobody wants to hear nothing but dad tunes.”

In 2023, Swims released his hit single “Lose Control” and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He was also nominated for a Grammy in 2025 and 2026.
