I have taken down both videos relating to Obsession. I am sorry to those who were hurt by them. I will be more mindful of my words and jokes in the future.
Watching men react to Obsession (and defending this dude) is the new way of figuring out if an intoxicated or unconscious woman would be safe alone with them
people really do have short term memory loss as if he didn't:
1. give bear the "credit" for not immediately sexually assaulting a compromised person
2. called Nikki and her actor a crystal wearing latino mommy, fetishizing her
3. called Nikki a ball buster
4. said Nikki is the type to call herself a baddy and be a "starfish" in bed
5. potrays men as normal avatar while heavily sexualizing the girls. (called sarah a septum girl??)
6. said that bearing wishing that nikki would love him more than anyone else ever is the same as 11 year old girls being "obsessed" with their crush
7. heavily doubled down on his actions, saying how women fetishize murder/rape podcast cases, that his offensive "latino" jokes were given by his latino friends, i'm sorry "if"...
8. didn't acknowledge multiple SA's by bear neither in the OG or apology video and had to make a separate comment for it
9. doesn't acknowledge bear's inability to see nikki as anything other than his romantic partner.
but sure "it was just a joke" and "it's not that deep"
I think the reason so many people are upset is because you downplay a lot of Bear’s toxic traits/actions that are less noticeably abusive but are nontheless harmful to women. It creates this type of abuser who potrays themselves as a kind misunderstood nerd but in reality is incredible selfish, manipulative, and entitled. Bear isn’t a nerdy hopeless romantic who makes some mistakes that leads him to become an abuser. The story’s main point is that he always had these characteristics that were hidden behind a “nice guy” facade, and it’s only after the wish when we really see this facade fall and his abuse becomes clearer to see.
"Writer-director Curry Barker intentionally crafted Bear as a flawed, borderline antagonist whose toxic entitlement strips away Nikki's free will. Barker even turned down a $2 million studio offer to rewrite the script and make Bear a traditional hero, refusing to dilute the cautionary, supernatural exploration of the "nice guy" trope." for the comment in the now deleted movie review video where it was somehow stated that the actor of Bear saying Bear was 'morally gray' in any way justified your analysis of the character, "While Bear is the protagonist at the start of Obsession, Barker and actor Michael Johnston approached his character's journey as a descent into selfishness. Their key insights into Bear include:The Cowardice Metaphor: Bear's inability to express his feelings honestly or accept rejection stems from cowardice, ultimately mirroring toxic real-world relationships.Violation of Free Will: Rather than an innocent mistake, Bear's use of the cursed toy represents a controlling desire to possess Nikki, which forces the audience to grapple with his actions. The "Nice Guy" Critique: Barker wanted to indict the culture that romanticizes sad, insecure men who believe being "nice" entitles them to a woman's love."
Bear is a passive coward who is reaping the benefits of his situation because he decided it was mostly out of his hands even when others are clearly telling him to do something (It's built into the film that ian and sarah are also not fully grasping how severe the situation is partly because the wish is fantastical and partly because they have their own motivations, which leaves Nikki in even more danger )
It's a consistent character trait for him to retreat back to what he deems comfortable for him. And also its a horror film so I didnt expect a default good person, so as soon as he's being weird about his cat dying i smelled the oncoming problems this guy was gonna create, but i think many more people already spotted that Bear sucks way earlier than something like the phonecall scene.
I think people have heavily misunderstood you. I have always enjoyed your videos and I understand everything said in jokes isn't supposed to be taken seriously. Some people just can't take certain jokes. Please keep making videos! I always enjoy them
I’m not usually a commenter, but figured I’d give my two cents. Alex, I hope you can read and consider, I’m not here to chew you out. I watched the original video, and I did have a sour taste in my mouth (before others started making videos in response etc). To me, the darkest theme in the movie is a woman having her autonomy being revoked by a guy for romantic/sexual purpose. I’ve seen women specifically being deeply impacted by the message, because it raises painful but relatable feelings of a man having ulterior motives and prioritise their enjoyment over a woman’s happiness. The what you ‘jokingly’ characterised the women characters in quite seductive ways, and giving Bear ‘credit’ for not taking advantage of her in some situations… it’s all yuck and unsavoury. I truly think this was a move you should have skipped for commentary, OR chosen a more serious tone and avoided ‘quirky jokes’ as per your usual style. I hope this helps you to understand why people are upset.
Honestly, I think you should've just ignored the comments and moved on instead of making an apology video or deleting the original one. I feel like people would've forgotten about it after a while. But now it seems like your reputation took a hit, and since you deleted two videos, the YouTube algorithm probably won't recommend your channel as much, so your numbers might drop. I really hope things get better for you. From the little I've seen in your videos, you seem like a genuinely good person.
“Ugh people are so sensitive you did nothing wrong Alex.”
There’s making jokes and then just continuously dehumanizing a character who’s a victim of rape within the movie. If it were like one joke it would be whatever, but the fact that it was the whole video just came off like you did not care at all
Also for people saying he didn’t defend Bear, his exacts words were “He doesn’t watch her undress after using the One Wish Willow.” Guys don’t get credit for doing that. That’s the bare minimum. You don’t get good boy points for not watching someone undress. Resisting the urge to assault someone is not “gentleman like.” And all of this is irrelevant anyway because he ends up sleeping with her anyway after having these suspicions. So his immediate suspicions are irrelevant because he dismisses them.
It’s very disappointing to see comments from women who are victims say “it’s not that deep” and that beat “isn’t really a bad person.” He had every chance to stop, but didn’t because he’s a coward and a bad person.
The main issue is that Alex says that Bear was a good person in the beginning of the movie even though he was clearly not. He almost had sex with a woman who he thought or at least noticed was off and has a history of alchohol and drugs so she could NOT consent to sex. The only reason he stopped is because she became aware and freaked out.
Alex has not addressed this and even took DOWN the apology video, and even in the video he didn't even acknowledge why people were upset and was a bit sarcastic even.
Gonna be honest i dont think you should review movies like this. I dont think you come at your reviews/ commantaries with enough depth to do so. Many of the jokes came off as trivializing at best and out eight offensive at worst. You said it yourself your not a thought leader or politician. Maybe thusly it isnt your wheel house and its better to stick to sitcoms, disney stuff and things where the jokes will land for an audience who actually is looking of a laugh full stop.
And this doesnt even go into why what you said was offensive.
Probably the best option. Considering the lighthearted nature of your content, I don’t think making a video on a movie as dark as Obsession was a good move. Regardless of what was actually said, it was just kind of a jarring decision and trying to make your usual content out of a movie so dark was kinda just doomed to fail no matter how respectful you tried to be about it.
Just washing your hands of it and striving to do better is probably the best you can do moving forward. Maybe if you’re gonna do a horror movie, just goofy slashers would be a better idea
Meh, it just wasn't the best subject matter. But it looks like a ton of people just do not understand your channel is comedy reviews, not in depth film deconstruction. I imagine a lot of creators saw it and watched it simply because of the movie you covered, without actually knowing your channel, then complained to their fans who then hate-watched it. I watched it and it actually wasn't bad, but a lot of people misunderstood. Honestly the best thing you can do is just keep doing what you are doing and ignore any more drama from this. You've already addressed it and it doesn't need brought up again. So as long as you move on, eventually everyone else will too.
Hello, Mr. Alex Meyers! :)
I read A TON of the comments, and at this point, I can’t really say anything new. I watched both videos, and I thought the original one was very entertaining, and I didn’t find it offensive. It gave me a different perspective (even though I haven’t watched Obsession yet). I always look forward to your videos! Thank you for all your work animating and for your jokes! You genuinely make me laugh!
Even some of the comments that aren't defending him are quite generous imo. Its clear to anyone who's watched Alex for multiple years and recently watched the obsession video;
He relates to Bear (as proven by years of hearing this guy trauma dump mid video) and he felt attacked and still does. He doesn't like the feeling of relating to the "bad guy" in the latest horror everyone's talking about. Tried to make a video to get some validation from his audience and its blown up in his face.... now the weird seemingly self aware misunderstood looser nice guy persona turns out to be not so self aware after all. FYI this guy has never shut uppp about how girls wouldn't give him the time of day because of his apearence.
Alex was right in the first half with bear not knowing his wish has worked but leaving out the fact she was graped wasn’t okay and made bear look less harmful then he was in the movie.
btw even if you're a r4p3/coercion survivor and you aren't offended by this, you don't represent all of the people that survived this type of violence. i'm sorry that it happened to you, it's the most horrible thing ever, but know that your own reaction won't dictate the reaction of the entire group you're part of
People nowadays only half listen. Chances are when they are "watching" your video, they weren't actually watching it, more like listening to it in the background. So they only were hearing what they wanted, took what they heard and spun it to what they were "feeling" versus what you actually said. People just want an excuse to feel like anything said is a personal attack against them. They are always a victim of something, never a champion of overcoming. I watched both videos. In your review video you never said anything to indicate that "r@pE wAs OkAy" you made it SUPER CLEAR about the circumstances that was happening in the movie. We as the audience sees what's happening, but the main character is out of the loop until later on when he understands. At that point he is the bad guy when he pretends everything is fine the way it is. Which is what you addressed.
You don't have to apologize, you didn't do anything wrong. Admit you're wrong only feeds this cancer of idiocy.
People just want a reason to complain. I love your videos and hope you don't lose sleep over trolls on your videos. Thanks for your hard work!
The comment section under his youtube post is so strange its like either young fans who dont even know what happened or people who actually agree with his view and think its "just a different opinion."
I didn’t watch this video, where I normally would have, because I saw the movie and was so badly affected by it. It triggered my PTSD severely for about a week. I was having an increase in hallucinations and intrusive thoughts, genuinely really badly affected. And the most damaging scene for me personally was the very first scene when he doesn’t necessarily assault Nikki right at the start because she becomes conscious and scrambles off the bed. I’m so glad I didn’t watch your video and can just write you off now without having to be further damaged by your comments honestly.
