A new fan-made feature-length anime based on Serial Experiments Lain has launched a crowdfunding campaign in Japan, offering rewards ranging from production materials to personalized videos in which Lain speaks the backer’s name.
Titled lain: Protocol 7, the project has launched a crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE. The creators describe it as an unofficial, fan-made OVA produced under the serial experiments lain TTL 2019–2028 Guidelines, which allow derivative works based on the franchise.
According to the project’s description, the story explores a simple question: “What would happen if the world of Serial Experiments Lain, born in 1998, connected once again to the reality of the 2020s?”

Originally released in 1998, Serial Experiments Lain became one of anime’s most influential psychological science fiction series, exploring themes such as the internet, identity, virtual reality, and consciousness years before social media became a part of everyday life. The series has since developed a devoted international cult following and continues to inspire creators nearly three decades later.
The crowdfunding campaign offers a variety of rewards, including digital production notes, setting materials, the completed OVA in digital or Blu-ray format, staff roll credits, and one of its more unusual perks: a personalized video message in which protagonist Lain calls the supporter by name. Thirty different message variations are planned.
The campaign has already seen a strong start. Within its first day, it had raised more than 1.7 million yen toward its 2 million yen funding goal, demonstrating that interest in the franchise remains strong nearly 30 years after its debut.
Not sure if Lain can work with the clean digital look anime has nowadays. It’s also weird hearing Lain talk more in a trailer than she did in an entire TV show.
