Wegmans fans in western Pennsylvania will soon have reason to celebrate.
The popular supermarket chain is one step closer to opening in the Pittsburgh area, as construction is expected to begin shortly on a store in Cranberry Township.
Construction on the planned 115,000-square-foot store, located along Cool Springs Drive next to the Lemieux Sports Complex, is expected to start in the next few weeks, according to WTAE.
Ron Henshaw, the township’s director of planning and development services, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Wegmans received a building permit in May. The company had started work in April on the parking lot and stormwater infrastructure, but the permit allows them to begin work on the actual building.
The Cranberry Township Board of Supervisors approved final revisions to the plan in June. Wegmans media representative Marcie Rivera told the Post-Gazette that Wegmans will begin foundations on the building in July.
Construction of the supermarket is expected to take between 12 to 15 months.
“[Wegmans] is expected to employ as many as 500 people and will be part of the Cranberry Springs development, which has commercial, residential, office, and retail facilities,” the township said in a release on its website.
“The store will feature all the traditional departments Wegmans customers have come to know and love, including an abundant produce department, a wide variety of seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese options, and a large selection of wine and beer,” Wegmans said in its initial announcement in 2025.
Wegmans, which is based in Rochester, New York, currently has 19 locations in Pennsylvania, including in Lancaster, Mechanicsburg and State College.
