There were troubles

[–]MiZe97Let's do some history 99 points100 points  (0 children)

How troubling!

[–]randomusername1934Helping Wikipedia expand the list of British conquests 81 points82 points  (2 children)

"Hey, can you explain 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland for me?"

Sure, you see in 1169 AD . . .

"Wait, I thought that The Troubles were in the 1960's?"

We'll get there when we get there.

[–]Dookwithanegg 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Strongbow has entered the chat

[–]Daitheflu1979 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bulmers is better…😉

[–]Motor_Watercress_489 23 points24 points  (1 child)

[–]Assassin-49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finally in the year 0000 there were...troubles

[–]unkteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, just don't get in, yeah.

[–]CrazyTechWizard96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]JesusGiftedMeHead 10 points11 points  (8 children)

It’s a great drink though

[–]Aethenosity 23 points24 points  (7 children)

What is? The 9/11?

[–]BluetheNerd 9 points10 points  (6 children)

I know this was a joke, but for anyone who doesn’t know, an Irish Car Bomb is a shot glass of whiskey and Irish cream liquor dropped into a glass of Guinness.

[–]Aethenosity 25 points26 points  (2 children)

That drink is called the 9/11 in Ireland, which was the crux of my joke

[–]BluetheNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhh I missed that my bad

[–]DoctorMedievalFine Quality Mesopotamian Copper Enjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kristalnacht? That’s in poor taste.

[–]SamIamGreenEggsNoHam 15 points16 points  (1 child)

And you should absolutely not order one while in Ireland, or a Black and Tan for that matter.

[–]minidazzler1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irish car bomb dont order just cos its shit. No one will give out.

You can order a black and tan, but we're all out of them bastards.

[–]JesusGiftedMeHead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And it tastes like chocolate

[–]AssignmentOk5986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok ok I won't get in my car alright. Just gonna use this bin over here.

[–]133DK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of that guy that paid a kid $10 to start his car for him every morning

Ostensibly to warm it up

[–]Sprintzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone knows u just look at the underside for anything you don’t recognize

[–]smallsmoke87 194 points195 points  (23 children)

Why dont the balkan countries do the same thing? 🔥

[–]Superxt0asterTaller than Napoleon 160 points161 points  (18 children)

Yeah Yugoslavia sounds cooler than Botswana and Hereshegoesagainia or whatever it's called.

[–]Atanar 18 points19 points  (3 children)

It's called Hersheygovenor

[–]Seeggul 12 points13 points  (2 children)

But they're European so you have to pronounce it in European: hersheyguvna

[–]yraco 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Even when I know it's a joke it hurts to see "European" used like that.

[–]daley56_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone knows European is an amalgamation of French, Italian and Spanish

[–]Ducky27_ 37 points38 points  (12 children)

you dummy, botswana is in southeast asia, not balkan

[–]Superxt0asterTaller than Napoleon 63 points64 points  (1 child)

You're right. I always get Botswana and Bolivia mixed up.

[–]Reasonable-Class3728 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want Bosnia and Herzegovina to unite with Trinidad and Tobago. And the new state was called Bosnia and Herzegovina and Trinidad and Tobago.

[–]TUSD00T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're playing chicken with central Africa.

[–]NotcheckingforPP 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If You Go Slavia and find people who want this then I’ll give you a cookie

[–]RatmanTheFourth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They all want it, they just disagree on whether it should be called Croatia, Serbia or Bosnia.

[–]jackt-up 240 points241 points  (7 children)

Okay, Cromwell, settle down

[–]cheydinhalsAnd then I told them I'm Jesus's brother 37 points38 points  (4 children)

Not being able to reply to this with my Cromwell photo meme is singularly upsetting.

[–]Current_Ad_400 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just describe it to us.

[–]Realistic_Bee_5230 3 points4 points  (2 children)

U could use imgur, a website that makes links for images

[–]RichardHuindil 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No, I was banned 15 years ago

[–]BitBap1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you're just back now? What did you do to deserve that?

[–]KyliaQuilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cromwell has nothing to do with this in even a jokey sense

[–]holiwud111 58 points59 points  (1 child)

IRAeeeealy don't know. Tough question.

[–]fuckyouswitzerland 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dr Cox?

[–]Organic_Address9582 110 points111 points  (7 children)

Why is it called Northern Ireland when the Republic of Ireland is more North than Northern Ireland, is the UK stupid?

[–]Forerunner49 64 points65 points  (5 children)

People there legit say they’re “going down south”, then drive north-west.

[–]Interesting_Task4572Researching [REDACTED] square 10 points11 points  (0 children)

....guilty....

[–]Cool_Ad9326 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I live in north Yorkshire and the locals still say they're going up to London

[–]JAGERW0LF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably from the trains, if a train is heading towards London it’s going “up to London” if it’s heading any direction away then it’s going “down from London”

[–]Drunkgummybear1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As a manc with a pretty neutral accent, any mention of London results in me putting on my best Corrie impression and saying “London?!”

[–]Cool_Ad9326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LAN-DAN!

[–]EtherealPheonixFine Quality Mesopotamian Copper Enjoyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well it's not called Northest Ireland.

[–]Atomik141 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I think it might cause some troubles

[–]Hamartia-64 27 points28 points  (2 children)

So you have chosen... Death

-Irish people

[–]mrtsapostle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They should have the bottom part join the UK and call it Southern Northern Ireland

[–]HiddenNightmares 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some trouble with that

[–]Spudnic16Hello There 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would have the troubles explaining it to you

[–]ExtraPomelo759 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]SuperheropugReal 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Sure, let's give the North and all of Britan to Ireland. /s

[–]ClassB2Carcinogen 3 points4 points  (4 children)

…and rename Britain to “East Eire,” and rename London to “New Crossmaglen.”

(Hey, London was named after a Celtic god, and Camden and Kilburn were effectively Irish territory anyway.)

[–]Outside-Ad4532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no no we could call it " East Anglia"

[–]Remote-Ad5853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newtowncrossmaglen

I know this is a shitpost but it is written into the Good Friday Agreement that if Northern Ireland wanna leave the UK and merge with Ireland they are free to

[–]theevilphoturis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sub should allow gif. There's a few funny references of the irs in Archer.

[–]rip_cut_trapkun 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That's a really banging idea OP, why don't you propose that to the Republic of Ireland?

[–]RealForestS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the reaction would be banging too haha

[–]TheProfoundDarkness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]_k3rn3lp4n1c_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Google bloody sunday

[–]NaturalAlfalfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunday Bloody Sunday'. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think 'Sunday, bloody Sunday'

[–]G_Morgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of Kamina we got Cromwell. Stuff happened.

[–]COLaocha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it another few decades and they'll probably be back together.

[–]Jauh0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Join UK, vote to unite with NI, vote to leave UK

[–]GareththeJackal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea how offensive that is?

[–]RobertGHH 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I would happily welcome Ireland back into the UK.

[–]Terrible_Biscotti_16 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Never happen

[–]RobertGHH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never give up hope my friend.

[–]NaturalAlfalfa 0 points1 point  (1 child)

As my granny would say " G'way and shite"

[–]RobertGHH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok

[–]CoachAnon205 2 points3 points  (7 children)

So basically northern Ireland citizens are mostly british and feel more british than Irish, so even with voting they'd want to stay british.

[–]Organic_Address9582 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It used to be actually one of "the most Irish" parts of the country during the earlier period of British rule over the Island so protestants were settled there to subdue the area.

There's a weird irony in the most Irish part not gaining independence because they were so Irish they were forced to be British.

[–]Lorim_Shikikan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See you in the next life o/

[–]daffalaxia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst we're at it, the question is valid on a global scale, but were silly tribal monkeys focused on dividing things right in two.

[–]Significant-Roll-138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us in the South don’t want to merge with the North.

The North doesn’t really want to merge with us, they want to stay joined to their king across in England.

England doesn’t give a fuck about the North but can’t find anyone to take it off their hands, so here we are.

[–]hitherebythere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read Irish history!

[–]NarrowSwimmer952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they kinda tried but let's just say they ran into so problems with each other.

[–]Alkynesofchemistry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]PraetorKiev 0 points1 point  (3 children)

*Scottish

[–]RayanYap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dermot Macmurrogh kinda invited them in

[–]Candy_Neige 0 points1 point  (5 children)

The Good Friday Agreement had promised the Northern Irish a referendum. Where did their promised referendum go?

[–]Independent-Try4352 3 points4 points  (4 children)

The referendum has to include both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. At present there js no indication that the majority of voters in NI would vote for a reunification (still a majority that consider themselves British).

There's also concern in the RoI that unification would cause significant economic and political problems.

[–]Candy_Neige -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

To be fair, most Irishmen want to have their island reunified anyway, so really, it's all just on Northern Ireland.

[–]NaturalAlfalfa 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's really not that simple. In theory sure, but a lot of us have misgivings about reunification. Massive cost, huge societal changes, demographic and political changes, merging the northern Irish civil service, taking people off the NHS and onto the HSE...

Not sure why you left Irish women out of your statement either

[–]Candy_Neige -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Ever since Brexit is in effect, most Irishmen really want the border controls to go away, so that has precedence over everything else, and even then, those are relatively minor problems.

Also, when I say "Irishmen" I mean all Irish people (so Irish males and Irish females), and not just Irish males.

[–]NaturalAlfalfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you Irish? Because it sounds like you don't know what you're talking about. Because I am, and I can tell you it is very much not as simple as " most Irish people want reunification.

Also, border controls? You think we want to totally upend our entire system and government due to having to pay a bit more if we order online from UK shops? That's the main impact brexit has had on the average Irish person. There's no border between the north and the republic. I drove to Belfast last week - there is no border, no border controls, nothing. Just a little sign on the side of the road saying" Welcome to Northern Ireland ".

[–]Dramatic_Finish10121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your right, Ireland should absorb the UK for shits and giggles, I'm sure they could settle it over a pint

[–]jizzybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people of Southern Ireland aren't keen on merging with the UK for some reason?

Fun fact: in the 1970s the Irish government was desperate to stop the UK from withdrawing troops from Northern Ireland.

[–]The_Eleser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

[–]reuben_iv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Ireland

[–]bentsonradiorepair -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Irish reunification needs to happen, the brittish need more Ls this year

[–]Loud_Industry_2044 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the British deliberately engineered it so that the people living their would always be pro British

[–]PleiadesNymph -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Catholic vs Protestant British Imperial boot lickers in 1921 faught to stay under the British imperial twat's rule while the real Irish kept fighting the centuries old battle for sovereignty

Now that religious tensions have cooled off, it remains to this day as the British boot on Ireland's neck

[–]DrunkensAndDragons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make it all blue? Or the island grey? If you answer wrong you’re going to need to start checking your car before you drive.

As a non-Irish (non-British even), it is one of my dreams to see united Ireland, speaking more Irish.

And I wish to see Scotland independent speaking more Scottish Gaelic as well. I don't want the Celts (including the Cornish, Welsh and Bretons) to disappear in the conformity mass of their overlords.

[–]KyliaQuilor 1 point2 points  (0 children)
