Just finished unlimited. What a bitter ending, I went for chizuru, and told her to get on the ship. That felt like the best option I could give her, and yet it still sucks. Nothing is preventing the beta from reaching her and destroying the planet, and the best case scenario for humanity is to become space age nomads that hop from planet to planet. Which is funny, because I 100% believe Ellen was intended to die in TDA 04. The War Dogs of TDA were named for the War Dogs of Ace Combat 5, and Wardog 3, Alvin H. ‘Chopper’ Davenport, was shot down and killed late in AC5 in the mission ‘Journey Home’. It seems highly likely that was to be Ellen’s fate. Having lost the Hibikibowl decisively to Yuzuka, her character had nowhere left to go but to die in battle, saving Hibiki, Yuzuka and Shizuku. Kouki just said it was about to start production when one of the producers backed out at the last second, which caused the entire thing to collapse in a chain reaction. I like the GG girls. I actually appreciated how they've incorporated crossovers with them so far. There's a very low hanging fruit with Dorothea they could've made by pairing her up with Meiya rather than the TE girls that they avoided, which annoyed me at first but I 'got' it would diminish her standing.

You could do anything in that fucking game, the Gamera collab was set in post nuclear fallout Japan and was about supporting the military against a swarm of never ending flesh eating kaiju birds, which is pretty much muv luv already. I tried Heaven Burns Red too because it is muv luv + yuri coded, but I couldn't handle Maeda Jun dropping an absolute garbage event story and deleting his twitter account due to backlash 3 times in a row.

As someone who's been involved in Muv Luv fanfics for a good six years now, they're as creatively bankrupt as Muv Luv itself. You can split them into three, the 'another loop', which is the most popular one, and which goes against the whole point of Alternative that there is no happy ending without sacrifice. To have Takeru be a gigachad who effortlessly saves everyone and wins the day is a spit in the face of Alternative.

Then there is the 'self-insert' fic, the second most popular. Some of them can be good, but they don't tend to last long, because the writer just wants to write about their dude in a cool robot fighting aliens, and a bigger, deeper narrative is beyond them.

Finally we get the massive crossover stories which tend to fit Muv Luv into other real or super robot shows, or even unrelated stories like 'Reign of Fire'. In interests of full disclosure, that's also what I do. If you're not interested in those other media they won't appeal, and so those stories don't tend to get many readers.

In terns of fanfics generally, nothing beats Wei Luxin's ones. They're good enough that he got to write official material off the back of them, an achievement nobody else will ever get.

sort of funny how the japanese fans initially thought that Alt 5 would be just hive raids, but instead of entering the thing we nuke it, instead of AMERICA bombing the absolute shit out of every hive possible all at once like TDA showed us.
Ironically, both could be great. One shows that the G-bombs fell like any other weapon against the BETA, making the search for an Alternative even more desperate, and the other shows that while G-bombs did (mostly) absolutely fuck up the BETA, they took the rest of the world with them. Makes for a nice scenario where either way, you've got to go with Alt 4.

Is there anyone who managed to do something interesting with that premise? It's definitely something most readers probably ponder at some point after finishing MLA, the novel brings it up surprisingly often and Takeru himself still thinks about it even while facing the Superior. But I agree that the conclusion is something that can't really be separated from what gives the story its special quality. Even just reading Extra while knowing where all of it leads to is kind of a unique experience.

Aside from that one friend self-insert story that essentially replaced Takeru with said friend and also borrowed a whole bunch of stuff from Strike Frontier, they all follow the same general trend of Takeru the Giga-Chad who effortlessly saves the day, saves Marimo from getting Chomped, ensures the Coup ends differently and usually gets to bang Meiya as well because Meiyafags eternally seethe at getting railroaded into the Sumika route in Aternative. Wish fulfilment, essentially. Which as we've both pointed out, the entire point of Alternative is to take a big dump on that kind of attitude. Takeru's hubris at knowing the future and thinking he can singlehandedly fix everything blows up right in his face, and that's where some of the best stuff in Alternative comes from.

I'm sure it's possible something interesting could be done with the premise, but nobody's ever come along with an interesting idea on what to do there that isn't just 'let's make the perfect loop where nothing goes wrong, nobody dies and the writer can fix all their complaints about Alternative.

Also, very few Muv Luv fanfics are ever finished. Most have a few chapters and are then abandoned as the writer loses interest. So many half-baked ideas that go long for a few chapter and then stop. Or you're Zuoriel, who's written about 5 million words worth of the same fucking fanfic over and over and over again. He'll never stop rewriting his dark and edgy fanfic until he finally gets it right, even if it takes another 5 different attempts.

I don't dislike him, in fact his notes on TDA are still ones I work off of, but his stories are the same shit over and over again. The cast standing around, being miserable and talking about how they're miserable for hundred of thousands of words, with zero narrative momentum. Not a single one of his stories has even gotten as far as the coup. They usually get to the CCSE and stall out somewhere after that. That he can write so much and yet say so little is kind of an achievement, just not a very good one.

There's a lot of details in Kaseki that are very clearly first drafts of concepts that would be further developed in Alternative. Most of the cast of Kaseki are artificial people known as 'Dolls', who are very clearly the foundation for the 00 Unit. If you're interested in how the ideas for Muv Luv came to be, then Kaseki's worth a read, though the structure of the VN is very archaic. It follows a map-based structure, where you have to click around a map of the mansion to get story segments.

There's been an English translation for a couple of years now, you could download it and give it a 5 minute test if you were really curious. I really like it, but I've also moved away from the 'cool robot' side of things towards the general âge story telling in things like KimiNozo and Owarinaki. And Kaseki's got that writing in spades.
