Chronos Games & Gifts in Beaverton, Oregon has announced that it is temporarily suspending its weekly Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments after repeated complaints about the hygiene of some participants.
In a statement posted to its community Discord server, the store said it had received numerous customer complaints and negative reviews citing poor hygiene at the events:
“This decision comes after repeated complaints from both players and customers regarding hygiene concerns during Yu-Gi-Oh! events.”
The store said the one-week suspension is intended to give organizers time to meet with players and establish expectations before tournaments resume.
According to the announcement, staff also cited additional issues beyond body odor, including players not washing their hands after using the restroom and failing to maintain basic cleanliness while handling cards and shared play areas.
The incident has renewed discussion around Konami’s official tournament policy, which allows judges to penalize competitors whose excessive body odor or poor hygiene creates an unpleasant environment for others. The guideline was introduced in 2019 as part of the company’s Organized Play policy.
The store emphasized that the suspension is temporary and applies only to its own local events. It expressed hope that tournaments will resume after players and staff work together to address the concerns and create a more welcoming environment for everyone.
