Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action television adaptation of Atlus’ Persona franchise, with producers behind Stranger Things and the Sonic the Hedgehog films attached to the project.
The streaming service is developing the adaptation alongside 21 Laps Entertainment, the production company behind Stranger Things, and Story Kitchen, the media company responsible for numerous video game adaptations, including the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
Christopher Monfette has reportedly been attached as the series’ writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The executive production team is also said to include Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood from 21 Laps, alongside Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen. Toru Nakahara of Sega will also serve as an executive producer, while Emily Feher will oversee the project for 21 Laps.
Netflix declined to comment when contacted by news site Variety, and no casting, release window, or story details have been announced. It’s also currently unknown which Persona game the adaptation will be based on, or whether it will instead tell an original story set within the franchise’s universe.
Originally created by Atlus, the Persona series follows groups of Japanese high school students who balance everyday life with supernatural adventures, awakening manifestations of their inner selves known as “Personas” to battle otherworldly threats.
The project marks another major video game adaptation for Netflix, which has increasingly invested in game-based productions following successes such as One Piece, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Devil May Cry.
Many suspected this turn of events to only be a matter of time, and considering how infamous live-action adaptations of games and anime are, critics believe the show will ultimately flop.
