"En garde, robe!" & "Viens t'battre, lopette!" Edition.

>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in

Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Meh dunno if I get anything. Proverb is the most likely.
Also it's annoying how all of those new bundles are not put into the cart automatically. You have to click on the bundle with the game you already own and then add that to your cart for 3 cents off.

It's fine, you'll be missing some background on the red planet/blue planet thing, which doesn't really come into play into either game.
Actual spoiler, though it doesnt really amount to anything: in one of DxM's endings it turns out you were ancient Martian aliens and everyone's gonna move to the Earth since Mars is fucked.
The only other thing connecting the two games is Solomon, some random supposedly immortal guy/thing appearing in exactly one mission in DxM and as a secret boss in TS. Nobody knows what the fuck is the deal with him/it/whatever.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/684000/Wooden_Ocean/
Half off and the best rpgm game I've played. I've put almost 200hrs into it and still haven't done everything. Mostly because the dev will never stop updating it even thought the game already has an ending. He just keeps adding side areas, new enemies, fuck ton of new gear or entire new systems.
>>
>>571891136

Okay, Windrose is interesting. I really like that you have different stamina for attacking and blocking.
But I really dislike how big numbers are. I just started the game and my starting copper weapons already deal 120 damage per swing, and the stuff I spawned with gave me 400 defense in total.

And ironically the game is brutal.

I mean, honestly...
If it wasn't for halberds and the fact that I like sailing, I'd likely refund the game. I struggle to properly explain what's wrong with it, so sorry if it comes off as disorganized, but:
>fights are insanely short and brutal, you die in 2, maybe 4 hits, and most fights are 1vs2 if not 1vs3, earlier I had to do a 1vs5 and I just died and died
>inventory drop on death
>respawn in your bed or in a tent (tents can be built anywhere, thank god, and you can teleport your boat to you, so no Valheim stranding)
>upgrades are very expensive (cost of the weapon for +20% "attack", which doesn't seem to increase damage? confusing)
>costs get high very quickly, you need 4 ores to make 1 ingot, and you need 7 ingots to make a weapon
>still not sure how blocking works because tutorial was against a live pirate who kicked my ass the whole time
>game feels balanced for a whole party (again, like every fucking survival game nowaday), pride won't let me lower difficulty to easy
>have a blunderbuss, bullets and gunpowder, but my character keeps claiming he has no ammo for the blunderbuss, very confused as to why, not seeing any options to make pellets or grapeshot or whatever it's called
>>
>>571905576
This game reminds me of that one game with the mime girls. What was the name of that one again? It was an LSD like or something.
>>571931746

>>571937436
Coop balance not caring for the solo players? You can't tweak world setting to make the resource grind comfortable for solos?

There was a game I played a while ago, don't remember what, but the main menu sucked up all my PC resources and caused unbearable stuttering across my whole computer, but once ingame it ran fine.
During troubleshooting I turned the FPS counter on, and the main menu was legit running at like 1000fps. Yes, four digits. The rest of the game was capped at 60.

No. The options are only to change fights difficulty, and it's all percentage to determine enemy HP and damage, and scale of the coop game.
Which is confusing because I have the best gear I can craft and I still die in three hits.
>>
>>571937317
I don't know but it's worse than onirism on max settings. I should try debugging it but I can't be bothered to do it during the heat wave.
>>571938329
It's not even a low spec. Ryzen 9900x with an rtx 5070 ti. Not the top of the top but still fairly high. I don't think upgrading to 9950x3d2 (what a fucking name...) and 5090 is really worth the 5k+ for what? 15% better performance.
It's likely a configuration issue. I had the same issue with ppsspp the other day and it turned out to be the vsync causing my pc to try to render the game I was playing at 3000+ fps. It was smooth alright, it was also capping out my cpu on a fucking psp game...

Finished High Voltage Society, a first person brawler metroidvania set in a grimdark prison city inspired by the movie Tetsuo: The Iron Man.
While the music and atmosphere are great the combat is a mixed bag, especially compared to the early EA version. The game used to have harder fights with enemies parrying your punches and currency dropping at death that have been removed now. All you have to do is to shimmy around and throw some punches. Even groups of enemies are a joke. The currency is worthless because you can use it to 1) Buy techniques (that are useless because the game's really easy) and 2) Refill your health and energy (useless because enemy drops refill both). The story is okay and it's just an excuse to make things happen so whatever.
I think the combat need a overhaul to make it more challenging and make you sweat every encounter, which fits with the idea of you being a bum fighting metal abominations.

It's just survivalslop.
The combat is fun (even if you're too fragile for me liking), the weapons are relatively varied, the enemies are nice and different, but the whole basebuilding/survival aspect feels like a completely different game.
It feels like they have a basis for a really fun action RPG, but a linear one, and they wanted an open-world/survival/crafting/early access world instead.

It's one of those games that defies explanation a bit.
The thing is, it just drops you into the world with no real objective and expects you to figure it out by yourself. This sense of motionlessness is what filtered me the first few times I've played it until on the third or forth attempt, I've stuck with it for long enough that I felt like I was actually making progress (though still not 100% sure towards what) which was enough to make me almost finish it.
It's basically a bit of an ecosystem simulation. You're part of a food chain. Some creatures hunt you, some are hunted by you some are neutral or defensive. You're job is to figure out survival strategies and explore the world. There aren't really upgrades to find or bosses to fight, it's mostly knowledge based: what's the best way to reverse and area, avoid a predator or find food in each new area. Sometimes includes finding certain item/creature interactions. It can be frustrating in the "how was I supposed to know that?" kind of way, but sometimes is also insanely rewarding when something you think of actually works.

I think you won't know if it's for you until you try it multiple times, for 80% off it sounds like an absolute steal though.

Does using a guide (just as a way of figuring out what you're supposed to do and where to go, not on how to kill enemies, just as a barebones guide on how to get from start to credits without wasting time meandering or getting lost) take away from the game?

>Some people might find it frustrating if you get killed for presumably no fault of your own, but I think it's fine, it's part of the trial and error learning
I'm fine with this. Any game with serious difficulty is going to lead the player to repeatedly reach a fail state (death that brings you to a previous check point, game over, restart level, etc.) multiple times until you figure out how you're supposed to overcome the roadblock in front of you (a process that necessitates trial and error by definition).
There is no such thing as an actual challenging game that you're not going to fail multiple times in before you win. It's not an actually challenging game if the average player can get through it without a steady barrage of fail states.

I'm playing through Blasphemous currently and I'm surprised it's so often described as a Metroidvania. The only ability I've gotten that has allowed me to go someplace I previously couldn't is the thing that makes the blood platforms appear. I'm maybe six hours in. Was hoping for a double jump or something. I haven't gotten any movement/traversal abilities. Great artstyle. I somehow have Ender Magnolia on my wishlist. Is it a direct sequel or an "upgrade?"

I played it with controller and had a good time.
Apparently at super high level people prefer kmb for consistency, but I doubt that's anything you should be worried about for a first playthrough.
I feel you though. I think the first time I played I was on the right track but didn't know it. Second time I don't even recall and third time I "softlocked" by getting through a really difficult area, realizing I was probably not supposed to be there and lacking the skill to get back out

I don't want to sound like an asshole I just really loved it and I was posting on /crpgg/ about it hoping to get some discussion but they only play garbage over there. ZP is honestly really well made, interesting and pretty in art too.
>>
>>571982392
>Never heard of Blue Prince, looks interesting. You like it?
Gonna just copy my reply to someone asking that same question a few threads ago:
>>570616916
>Yeah, it has some meta-progression (aside from knowledge gain), but I wish there was more.
>On one hand the fact that it has a lot of randomness makes it very unique and it's really fun, how each player, because of the randomness, will experience each mystery from a slightly different angle and how they are crafted in a way that they are all solvable, no matter which order you find the clues in.
>But I think my main complaint is something which I think in part could have been addressed with more meta-progression and in part is probably an unavoidable sacrifice this kind of design just has to live with: There were moments, at least in my playthrough, where I was stuck on a very specific puzzle or mystery and was basically just redoing runs until I rolled the specific room or combination of rooms I needed to figure it out.
>If you have multiple things going on, it's not a problem, because the more things you're looking for, the more likely it is to encounter one of them, but if you're at a point where you've solved all but one thing, before finding new mysteries, it's an absolute slog.
>But regardless I'd absolutely recommend it. It's definitely a game I'd recommend keeping a physical notebook for. There's lots of information you find bit by bit or stuff that's obviously an answer to a question you haven't found yet and keeping it all in your head is borderline impossible.
>>570618019
>And remember, make sure to keep playing for a bit after you reach the end credits, I've had some loose ends left untied when I reached the ending and would have missed some of my favorite puzzles if I hadn't kept pursuing them.
>>
>>571982071
I think that on my latest try I only had a few minutes from my checkpoint before that heavy rain would come and I had no idea where to find the next shelter, at some point I rushed to an underground section and the rain still killed me and it pissed me off lol. Just gotta have more patience I guess, but the game punishing deaths doesn't help. Anyway thanks I'll stick to controller too then, I found it to be slightly more comfortable but I wasn't sure whether I'd miss out on important movement tech (I don't care about the more tryhard speedrunner strats)
>>
>>571982392
As for ZP, that sounds interesting.
I want to play it sooner rather than later, mostly just to form my own opinion on it, but I somehow doubt it will surpass Disco for me. Though to be fair that might be connected to the fact with how enamored I am with Disco.

Oh speaking of, if you like unique games, maybe give THE LONGING a shot. It's kinda weird to explain. To me it felt like half the gameplay was just being stuck in my own headspace thinking about things, I suppose I played it in just the right moment of my life for that

have no idea what they do
>>
>>571990594
there should be a workshop mod that'll show you the description of items
or you can read on the wiki
its stupid to force yourself to memorize every items sprite though, theres way too many items for that
>>
>>571987786
seconding this one, a bit on the easy side but the atmosphere was top notch
>>
>>571990838

>>
>>571990838
>>571990594
They added an in-game setting for that in the last big update, it actually shows the stat difference it'll do on pickup rather than the default as well which is pretty good
They made it so you still have to pick up the item at least once for it to show you the description from then on >:)
>>
>>571991265
yes that's the vanilla way but the item descriptions mod is a very nice QoL feature, there are way too many items in the game nowadays.
But if you don't want to use mods then >>571991724 sounds reasonable
To be fair picking up an item that completely fucks up your build and immediately losing the run is part of the experience
>>
>>571991724
additionally I'm pretty sure it unlocks after you beat the """""final"""" boss once
>>
>>571991724
I forgot to add to this, the hidden description is actually very useful for a different reason - it tells you if you have the item in your collection, so for completion's sake you can see if you still need to pick it up or not on that save

You can choose your own skills and break the game consuming enemy souls because they don't respawn, all of them also have enemy weakness to things like silver bullets. At least they've abandoned censuring gore for over a decade now. The most annoying part wasn't even playing games with the gore removed, I didn't care too much for that, but how it fucked with modding. Not to mention I couldn't play it with English voice acting

That's why when I still played porn games one of my favorites was unironically Skyrim with lewd mods. I guess in that case you can say that the porn part is an afterthought, but at least it's highly customizable and it's all embedded into a fully fledged open world adventure game.

Same universe as Lillies but in the far future. Lillies takes place in a typical fantasy era while Magnolia takes place in a crumbling sci-fi fantasy world.
It is a better game in most ways but it also loses the general air of tragedy and quiet sadness that Lillies had so it left much less of an impression on me.

Who's talking about 30? My town was at 42 and the night was at 34. I literally can't use my computer during the day because my apartment reach 50 in the afternoon.
Even my phone turns itself off from overheating while idling. I just want to play video games for god sake. I want to know if rain world is worth the hype.

Megabonk has actual movement depth, it just needs more areas and bosses with more complex attack patterns
>>
I actually really like "item-based" (whatever form that takes) approaches and classes in games, be it something like traps and grenades in Underrail, Chemist in Crystal Project or Gadgeteer/Peddler in Fell Seal. And I yearn for more, so I come to you asking for suggestions. Any genre will do. Please.
>>
>>572070320
Outward? It's action-RPG, but there's some emphasis put on traps.
>>
>>572070431
I knew I forgot a good example. Already played it (though not in a while), but it's a good one. Well, the game's just alright, but the Rogue Engineer spec is fun to mess around with (even if totally broken due to stupid AI running at you through a whole line of traps). As is tossing bombs around.
So still, thanks, reminded me to replay it sometime.
>>
So I got Rusted Moss yesterday and 10 minutes in I had already gotten myself stuck into a route with tricky af patforming (to be fair there was a warning) that eventually lead me to skipping a good chunk of the starting area, this is gonna be fun

you can always come back later when you have more abilities
some of the "challenging climbs" are impossible without those extra abilities though since youre at the start that one is doable

>>572054910
Oh, I definitely agree but when the post-boss flashbacks in Magnolia didn't make me feel like shit I was a bit taken aback.
I was actually pretty glad almost everyone made it through including the side quest character that felt the most like tragedy bait. Every time I ran into her I was expecting the other shoe to drop and for it to end with you just finding her helmet near a blood stain or something.
It didn't stick with me as much the unrelenting misery of Lilies did but I still loved it and highly recommend it.
>>
>>572074225
yeah just moving on was hard enough (the spot were I had to get the wind to swing me up and do a frame perfect release was devilish) and I think I found another deviation that was impossible for me, or at least I couldn't figure it out. But now I don't know whether to press on or to go through the starting area backwards, (intended) sequence-breaking is fun but I've seen a few gates that are obviously teleports and I don't wanna go half the playthrough without this feature just because I accidentally skipped its unlock early on

I DID IT, GET NUKED RANDOM CITY. It was my second attempt at the boss and I made sure to have tons of cooling gel ready this time. It was also a really long stage because I took 90 turns just finding where the boss was (also came really close to dying once but I won so who cares). Now that I managed to clear the game and have a better understanding of it, I wish there was a bit more variety in playstyle available since there's only like 5 type of weapon you can use and some of them are just very situational (like gatling gun is just a short ranger machine-gun, drill and rockets are mostly used to destroy terrain, sniper rifle is so weak later on it feels useless).

the game does a terrible job at teaching smithing, as far as I remember, the player has 0 way to know how much the blocks will move before trying, unless he consults a third party source.

The game sets the big hit mode as the starting one and does it even say what the mode does? The first instinct of the player is to click to experiment, and why not, both knapping and clay are retard proof. All of this while one single hit with that mode is enough to fuck your piece beyond recovery.

I also assumed I would be able to undo a mistake, even if it meant to melt the whole thing again into molten metal, but no, I can't put it on crucible for some reason, seems like I need to craft a chisel to break it or something.

Besides being able to freely build stuff in my base. I have to provide to my mercs stuff like food, medices, armor, a place to sleep, power to the base, entertainment of some kind for the mercs, ammo and don't know what. Also mercs and the player have a "psyche" status bar, that looses points if you don't provide these things. Also if you stay too long in the Zone, a random shadow starts yelling at you, doing damage and damaging you psyche too. Had to down a whole vodka bottle to get my psyche up, in true slav fashion.
For some reason I don't have any crafting material mission, so I think I'm going to grind food. No food is game over.

>>
>>572202939
I had... two? Three cats.
Yeah, three cats. Arthur, Negro (my grandfather named that one), and, when we realized that cats don't care how you call them, Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès.
When they were in the mood to be petted, they'd come and rub against you, but the second you touched their belly, your hand was a free buffet.
>>
>>572203275

Sadly, yes. He also broke a microwave by pissing on it, cut the power for 3 days by pissing on a power socket, set one on fire by repeatedly pissing on it and destroyed 2 fridges by going behind them to bite the cables. No clue what his problem was but he was the main reason I moved out.

Just warning you, these might be a stretch because I'm really trying hard to think of something, it's not usually an archetype I think about much.
Any roguelike/lite is a given but that's really more a baked-in assumption, smart item use is necessary for smooth progression.
Wartales lets you do a fair bit with combat items and generally making them is quite easy, though it's not generally the most impactful part of your tactics.
False Skies has Chemist as a class too, though it's a higher-tier one, and its whole gimmick is boosting item potency and fueling its abilities with the shittiest healing item (while also able to convert them into attack items in a pinch).
Barony has the Mechanist (in one of the DLC) and it's pretty fun to mess with, though I personally don't enjoy that game much solo. Plus it's roguelite so even without that.
Grim Dawn has the Demolitionist mastery, that's basically the flavor for it. Bombs and traps, traps and bombs.
And uhhh... Age of Decadence has item spam as one of the most potent options, technically, I guess?

Also it's not indie by definition but Greedfall comes to mind since the Tech playstyle is probably the most fun out of the main three (magic mostly spams Stasis, and while mega grug is always funny it got really boring fast for me in that one)
That's all I got. Maybe someone else has a less retarded and reaching list.

How's the game? Had it on my radar for a while.
Is scavenging derelicts all you do, or do you also get to walk around your own ship, space stations etc?
>>
>>572214401
True, but not so much because of general attitudes alone, and more because Paradox decided to gut the tone of WoD to appeal to those who don't want to play bad people, just vaguely shitty people who get to be dramatic about being 'monsters' while having innate moral high ground over the actual monsters.
I feel like under a different leadership it'd still happen, actually. You need to understand how much people are still willing to overlook a hot vampire doing.
>>
>>572214747
All of that and more. It's a full-on solar system scale space life sim with everything from realistic (2D) orbital mechanics to autistic social needs management.

But salvaging derelicts is the noob experience and that's the most developed part of the game. I have a hunch most players never leave the nigerian scrapyard where you start.

No rush, it will take years and years after 1.0 release to populate the whole solar system with content that isn't just placeholders. Right now there's only a handful of properly developed regions around the solar system plus maybe a dozen placeholder stations in places that should have major human colonies according to lore. But the game's scope is so immense, its map even tracks objects beyond the aphelion of Pluto's eccentric orbit. Maybe some of that stuff will feature in future supernatural plot lines. There's only one of those right now. There's not much connecting ostranauts to neoscavenger, yet.
>>
>>572217252
Yeah, and technically that's still the focus point, but... Paradox is a company that realizes their biggest possible audience probably subscribes to one of those weird schizophrenic moralities seen online. And so when you look at how they differentiate the designated antagonists from the designated protagonists, you quickly find parallels between their approach and the sort of people who will look you in the eye and without a shred of irony tell you that they could forgive a serial killer but not a rapist. Obviously it's not quite so on the nose, but the way the characters are written and what behaviors are often delegated to only "the really bad vampires" is... off?

I'm really enjoying it. It's got some really good flavor if you read through descriptions and stuff. I might say watch a let's play of it or something to see if the gameplay loop is up your alley. It's totally up mine. It takes several things I enjoy about some other games and welds them together quite nicely.
>>
>>572220510
I'm not sure if it would happen that easily. The mass schizophrenia that happened to Earth hasn't happened anywhere in space. Spacefaring civilizations are, by necessity, rooted on scientific knowledge that allows them to survive out there. No folklore and stuff like that that could become reality just because people believe in it. Out there the supernatural manifests differently.

Alright, I just beat the first boss of bloodstained and I already like it a lot. The team clearly knew what the fans wanted. You got the soul system from Aria, you got the boss medals from ecclesia, apparently a stupidly large amount of bonus modes. The tutorial gives you enough weapons to play around a find one that fits you, when the game gives you a new toy that cost MP, it's always in a safe place near a safe point so you can safely learn to use it. The movement is smooth, you can backdash cancel most attack, basically all the ingredients you would want for that style of game.
Tbh, I originally dismissed the game entirely because I generally don't trust "company veteran turned indie makes unofficial sequel". It doesn't help that the 3D looks really bad in screenshots (the game actually looks surprisingly really good in game).
If it keeps up and don't fall flat on its face, it would definitively be one of my top metroidcastlevania. But even if it does, I only paid 4€ for it.

Battery barely made it back, but we're here. Seven minutes of power to spare. After I left I realized I left the dolly unloaded and just left free walls on there, but oh well. On to the next. Oh, since y'all are talking about that sort of thing. The first time I came out, while installing the flooring on the port side, I did see some purple doctor octopus thing that phased in and then back out WHILE PAUSED. Grant either didn't notice or chose not to react to it and I wasn't quick enough to get a screenshot. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled though.

I'm gonna be a cheeky fuck and say Vintage Story.
I wouldn't call it a farming game in the traditional sense, but the farming in it forms the backbone for literally anything else you do and thus is embedded into a context. So you're not just farming for farming's sake like in some more casual games, but you actually feel the importance it has every time your have enough food to comfortably survive another winter or focus on building shit instead of hunting and gathering

I think what caused it was that I clicked on the "make sure to equip your weapons" thought orb, while also moving in the cutscene trigger. Because I very briefly heard the tribunal music and the camera panned. However the end of the thought orb canceled that and I could continue walking.
And then this lock happened because Titus has an animation associated with that line, which he can't play in this location, so I'm assuming the game is waiting for him to finish an animation he can't do

>>
>>572260241
I think forever winter suffers from a tug of war between factions of gamers and the devs not having a clear vision is just getting tugged along trying to please one side then the other. It's always mixed because one side thinks the update fixed everything and other thinks the update ruined everything.
>>
>>572262484
Man, this is why announcements like "we'll develop the game together with the community" when justifying early access opens a huge pit in my stomach.
Sure community feedback can be valuable and throwing your ideas against a large scale playtest can surely help you iron out kinks in your vision.
But thinking you can just throw your game out there, without a coherent vision and just listen to what people want is absolutely insane.

I came back after playing your game just like I said I would anon. Obviously I haven't finished it in just 2 days because I can tell it's a pretty long game but here are a few of my impressions in no particular order
Things I liked
>Huge choice of skills, weapons and armor, basically absolute freedom to build your character in combat
>The combat is surprisingly good, I went outside and got my ass kicked in 3 seconds. I came back after picking several skills and equipped my character with gear that didn't suck and I was the one kicking ass
>A lot of elemental skills to choose whatever I want along with weapon skills, that's fun
>Non-linear maps
>Violet is cute, very important for any female protagonist
>Just from what I've seen you can tell it's a ridiculously long game which is always impressive for an indie solo dev project
>Custom systems like teleportation, card games, and leveling up personal traits, the game is an RPG through and through.
Clearly the game was made by a fan of classic JRPGs focused on going from one village to another doing things in long world map and that rocks.
Down here are things I would change, but they are very personal things regarding RPG tastes and don't necessarily speak for everyone
>Hardly any character seems to take what's happening in the story seriously. Neither the important ones nor the secondary ones, which takes away a lot of tension from what is happening or the stakes of what's at risk
>The tutorial info is a bit overwhelming, I think it would be better to have a specific tutorial for the basics and let the player figure out the rest instead of the info being scattered all over the world
>I feel like the dialogues go out of their way not to be serious. They try not to get too deep into important or philosophical topics, even though the start of the game pointed towards something else
>Despite the game being set in 1200 or the medieval era or an alternate world to ours, everyone seems to have a modern vocabulary
>>
>>572276536
(cont.)
>In general I feel like you're a bit naked because the world seems vast but you basically get no info about it or who is the protagonist or anything really
>The tone seems to be a bit off for a world that is clearly very dark and heavy
All in all impressive game you have there. I can already see myself playing it for longer than most expensive things out there just for the liberty it offers alone

Yeah, it is a great little game and it never peters out. The two classicvania style side games are also great (despite having a story timeline that doesn't make any timeline sense even with each other) if you get a chance to play those. The epilogue DLC is kind of crap but since it is a Simon's Curse riff I get the feeling that it is sort of supposed to be and it is a cute way to send everything off.

There's flaws for that. And you don't have to take any positive traits.
>roleplaying
Sure, but you can do that without having some options be borderline useless. And you can do that while conveying that information properly. Does the game tell you that Mechanic is kind of a joke skill with basically one good use (early Travois, easier access to other vehicles), and two if you squint (and ignore the fact Cryo is not always a good spot for the main camp)? No. In fact, it implies it's as good as Athletic, since both cost 3 points. At least Electrician costs 1 which tells you immediately it's a niche thing (though even then it's actually shittier than the other 1-pointer, Tracking).

it really came and quickly went, huh? I thought this would be Edmund McMillens next big thing. I mean it was a big start.
But Binding of Isaac just hit a new peak of 123k in the last 24 hours because idk why and even before that it was sitting around 25k-30k daily.
The fact there wasn't even a little bit of upwards trend with 1.1 is kinda sad but it also doesn't read like a very big patch.
I guess if it stops around here it would be the same as isaac pre-repentance numbers but if it drops any further it is just dead.

Does it just not have the same kind of replayability? i wouldn't know, i haven't touched it yet. I am deathly allergic to grid based combat.

Sounds rough, but I guess it can be kinda tricky, especially if you're still learning the game.
I think I had the most fun playing with friends, but it's really hard to set up regular sessions with more than 2 people, so eventually al of our games just fizzled out.

I never played with friends. I remember getting frustrated with the game because it has two big issues:
>1) constantly teases you with grey buttons over all the shit you can't do because you didn't shekel the DLCs
>2) the tutorial only explains the base game
So I got teased with the retaining armies from Legacy of Rome, but when I finally bought it, I got slammed with Factions and I never figured out how they work.
In the end, it's more fun to read about this game than actually play it.

>>572352406
Yeah. Good fucking riddance. I remember trying to ask for help when I tried Victoria 2, I ended up quitting it instantly.

What kind of tactics? Turn-based or real time?
>>
>>572352829
Oh yeah the DLC shit was crazy, it kind of felt like playing a subscription game. It was alright for me because a friend gifted me most of the DLC on a sale and from that point on staying "up to date" was affordable, especially since I actively played the game.
But something like Stelalris I always pirate, because I play it very rarely so it's not wroth paying to get the up to date game every time.
Plus their DLC management is so shit allegedly it has gotten better when compared to something like Total War: Warhammer. In the latter, if you want to play a faction with all their mechanics, you ust get the DLC for them and have it all. In Paradox games, a DLC usually focuses on a region/playstyle, but always comes with content that affects a bunch of other shit aswell. So if you want the "complete" experience you'll need to buy a DLC for a region you'll never play just to have that one important feature in your game. It's garbage.
And the tutorial is shit too, I was glad a buddy showed me the ropes and I could learn through trial, error and watching other people play from there.
>>
I feel bad for whoever has released their indie games between last week and the next two

I mean, they did try a subscription-based system, but reception was overwhelmingly negative.
And yeah, I prefer Warhammer's system. I had to get Legacy of Rome because I hoped that retainers would make battles and war actually more interesting than "just recruit everything and crush enemy". I was wrong.
>>
>>572354116
I feel a little bad in general, for anyone who has to compete in the indie space. Whenever there is a nextfest, I feel so overwhelmed, scrolling though dozens of demos, discounting most of them purely based on their thumbnail and title, and the first couple of screenshots, if they're lucky.
I don't want to think about how many games that I would have enjoyed, I miss every year just because the first impression didn't click
>>
>>572356142
>I mean, they did try a subscription-based system
I'll be honest, I think I was one of the few people who felt like that was a decent idea. The game is ALREADY basically a subscription and for someone getting into it fresh, the subscription fee might be cheaper than catching up on over a decade worth of paid expansions.
But that's from a perspective, where you accept the status-quo, if anyone wants to tear into how the game got to this point in the first place, I'm totally on board.
>I had to get Legacy of Rome because I hoped that retainers would make battles and war actually more interesting than "just recruit everything and crush enemy"
Yeah, I remember the "must have" DLC list for EU4, had a case where you would buy a DLC pretty much for a single feature.
>>
>>572359152
>catching up on over a decade worth of paid expansion
is creamAPI not a thing anymore? Like I don't mind buying a bunch of DLCs for a game I've played a lot but Paradox pushes things too far

ASKA is more a !notViking village game rather than an actual "survival" game. It has lots of combat-related stuff, but it is to complement the village building.
If you want a survivalcrat, try Icarus(only 3 DLCs have actual content, the others are just for buildfagging), Green Hell(it is kicking my ass) or Sons of The Forest, and Abiotic Factor(I can't not recommend this one enough).
Also try Soulmask, is chink kino.

Castlevania symphony of sorrow. Bloodstained ritual of the night.
>>
>>572362378
I played it for the first time shortly after the release it was perfectly fine.

I think the main issue is that the game went through development hell, was delayed for years and still released without some promises of the kickstarter, like some alternate game modes. I played one of the alternate modes (one we play with another character) later, there was no story, items or anything, it was completely empty and boring, and they took YEARS after the release to add that mode, its ridiculous. I think there was some performance issues with the version for some console too, but idk.

The main game with the main girl is actually fun, even if a little rough around the edges. Its actually surprising how decent it is, considering the shit show of the development.
>>
>>572363246
To be fair I don't mind a game like Medieval Dynasty, but some extra stuff to do, which I imagine is what ASKA is.
I'm also waiting for Valheim to 1.0 in September.
Sons of the Forest I might be too much of a pussy for though I enjoyed playing the first game with friends and Green Hell looks kind of like a worse version of that. Though I am considering biting the bullet and getting the upcoming sci fi forest game, whatever it's called. The concept looks cool.
Icarus I'm flip flopping on if I like the setting (I think we had this exact same conversation before itt)
And Abiotic Factor I do actually play a bit on and off. It hasn't quite clicked to the point where it captures me for weeks yet, but it's fun in short bursts.
>>
>>572365383
>(I think we had this exact same conversation before itt)
Given that I'm the only fag that recommends that game, most probably. It is comfy if you turn the difficulty to easy. Also now you can breed pets and try to max 5 stats of them.
>To be fair I don't mind a game like Medieval Dynasty, but some extra stuff to do, which I imagine is what ASKA is.
Minus the village breeding/heir system, ASKA has more actual game to play than buildfagging.
>It hasn't quite clicked to the point where it captures me for weeks yet, but it's fun in short bursts.
I played it almost exclusively for a month until I finished it. It has the HL1 feeling of SHTF, with over the top sci-fi stuff.
>>
Is Undertale actually good? My extremely limited exposure to the "fandom" on /v/ painted them to be the most obnoxious cocksuckers imaginable, which probably soured me on the game.

>>
>>572355467
Played it a bit to beat the true final boss a couple of times but never did the super high ascension runs. Its not the best looking game but yeah I'd say its fun. In-run builds do take a backseat to character choice, weapon choice and the new specializations. They're still important enough to impact the runs but theres just a lot less focus on them
>>
>>572366606
The reason why they're so, oh to say, peculiar, is because there a lot of homestuck fans due to some of the music being made by a dude who did songs for homestuck. And by songs, I mostly mean one single fucking song that the creator has been milking for more than a decade now and whenever it prop up these guys go apeshit and aggregate to whatever fandom its now associated with, toxifying it in the process.

Like its not a bad song per se, nor is the guy a bad artist, but you can tell its like a cursed magnus opus he cant ever abscond from, and the super toxic fanbase always end up rearing its ugly head back.

>>572365953
>ICARUS
I think what put me off is that I expected it to be a subnautica without water, where you've crash landed instead of gone down on your own accord. I'm a bit autistic about settings and premises so somehow that always put me off. But recently I've been starting to "get to terms" with it, so who knows, maybe I'll give the game a shot soon-ish.
Which DLC do you recommend?
>Minus the village breeding/heir system
To be fair, I've never even got to that part in Medieval Dynasty, because the building felt a bit bare-bones and the management aspect was kinda micro intensive, with no way to make supply/demand self sufficient without an excel sheet or some shit unless you want to eyeball it
>It has the HL1 feeling
That's what drew me to it, that you're just some nerd trying to survive and escape the facility. Taps into that feeling of dread HL1 gave me, when you're stuck in this never ending underground facility. Except now you also need to worry about food and water. It's a cool setting
>>572366606
I remember being blown away by how the game subverts some of your expectations and has some fun twists on the genre in general. But that's been over a decade ago and I was a lot younger, so can't say if it still holds up.
>>
>>572368498
>Which DLC do you recommend?
New Frontiers adds a new meta resource to get more meta items. Also a whole map with missions and operations and moves a bit the little "plot" the game has.
Dangerous Horizons same as the previous one. New map, meta resource/items, missions/operations, moves a bit more the plot, and new mounts. Also new resources and a new tech tier.
I would get the Dangerous Horizons over New Frontiers, better map and tech tier. The purple filter of parts of the New Frontiers map gives me eye-cancer.
>and the management aspect was kinda micro intensive
The management has been improve a bit, with a better menu that displays what the village consumes/produces, without need to keep a spreadsheet open. But it is still ass.
ASKA has a better everything, only has some minor bugs, and needs more end-game content, but it can give you a solid 5-10 hours of fun in it's current form.
>>
>>572369210
>The management has been improve a bit, with a better menu that displays what the village consumes/produces, without need to keep a spreadsheet open

It came out and it was fine but it kind of has the Mina the Hollower problem where it was fun and good enough to cause a quick blip but it just wasn't nearly as good as the studio's best game so it kind of came and went.

>I also think i grew out of his humour.
I think his stuff works best when it is trying to be horrifically unpleasant in a cartoony way as opposed to the full on wacky stuff he was going for with Mewgenics but I think that is another reason I only played Mewgenics for a couple of hours as opposed to the probably hundreds of hours that I have sank into Issac over the years.
>>
>>572366606
Yeah, it is fun if you avoid the fanbase like the plague. Likable characters, a unique take on turn based JRPG combat, a decent story, the game actually makes the moral choices feel like they matter since you can lose out on a lot of character interactions and almost every fight can have an effect on the neutral endings. Weird how nobody ever talks about those since Undertalefags are obsessed with AUs and there is some fun stuff in there like king Metaton. If you don't mind the typical Earthbound clone quirky humor you'll probably have a good time with it.
Deltarune is pretty good too but Toby can't write yuri for shit and that has really dragged the quality down over the last few chapters.

Trains are an amazing way to travel. They're comfy, you get to see your country and they're more eco-friendly and stress free in theory compared to planes.
But our government has been neglecting them since the 90s, so high speed rail is unreasonable expensive, unreliably and unpunctual.

I wanted to like NEO Scavenger but the first time I played it a few runs in a row ended due to terrible luck (injuries during scavenging without finding any way to clean and dress wounds, chains of encounters I couldn't run away from quickly enough, entire tiles completely dry of supplies resulting in a slow death) - then the second time I played, the run ended immediately just because the game decided to spawn a second dogman up my ass right outside of the Cryo facility. And I decided I don't feel like putting up with that level of RNG.
There is of course something to be said for unpredictability in a survival game, since adapting is a crucial part of survival, but without a base level of "I know what to do to survive" that doesn't rely on the world deciding to mercifully not fuck you immediately it's hard to see the appeal.

I think the issue with neo scav is just how sudden the shift from 'pure RNG' to 'oh it's fine' is. The first days can be basically a black comedy with how many things can randomly ensure you will die, and how every choice you get can seem a bad one - search places carefully to avoid danger and enemies, oops you wasted entire days finding nothing due to the loot chance reduction and died of thirst (or had to drink dirty water and got sick and died). Search them hastily, oops the building collapsed and now you're covered in deep cuts that will probably get infected and kill you because you haven't found the medical supply to deal with that yet. And even if you get lucky, maybe you made enough noise to call something, and maybe that something was a dogman or a dude with a gun or just a rando with a spear that spawns in range to gut you in one turn. And even Athletic doesn't guarantee you'll be able to run away, just like Hiding won't actually guarantee you'll stealth by enemies.
But conversely? You can wander into the first tile out of Cryo and find a huge bag, a crowbar and a lighter, the latter two of which make further scavenging runs way safer and likely to give you more items, and the former of course lets you haul a giant score back to a safe place. And once you have a solid camp, a passable weapon and basic scavenging tools it's suddenly smooth sailing overall, surprise dogmen aside - your only danger become the usual pitfalls of poor preparation before wandering too far or overconfidence around threats. First time I got past the initial hurdle by pure luck, I almost got whiplash at how much easier it got immediately after.

I'm playing Heroes of Hammerwatch 2, any tips on stat allocation? Do I just dump into main stat for each character? Do I try to keep a few core stats? Do I just go for dmg & HP? I'm a little bit lost.
>>
>>572488470
Don't know the game but has there ever been a stat system that doesn't just boil down to "get more dmg & hp"?
>>
>>572488920
Eh, yeah I mean generally you're right. but sometimes there's stuff like: "You never need more than X amount of HP" "Attack speed gets diminishing returns after X number" and some games are even: "Hp doesn't matter because you will not be able to ever get enough to survive more than 2 hits, so you might as well go all out in damage" shit like that.
Also of course stuff like "Don't bother with weapon damage, ability damage is what you need" or the other way around.

60 euro for a 6 hour long ride on a "high speed" rail, 600 km.
I used that to get back.
The ride to get there?
~1 hour by plane. 20 euro.

The kicker?
the cabin was empty, until half an hour later, it filled up to the brim with middle schoolers going on weekend trip to where I regularly live.
6 hours of children yelling. 6 hours sitting. three times the price.

I'm very close to the end of the game now so I'll give a summary. After Bloodless I killed the guardian and found the 8-bit boss, he took me a while to do, since I was basically exploring the endgame area, every other bosses went down very quickly until Zangetsu rematch. I did O.D and IGA (I had to look up the location for IGA since I bought the dlc after beating Gebel) they were fairly hard and took a lot of experimenting. Ironically, I instantly destroyed Grimory right after. I got most shards naturally, all except the one on the train, which pisses me off a bit because I actually sat down there for a full minute after beating the train and nothing happened so I thought it was just scenery. Bloodstained was surprisingly straight forward, no mothman, no yeti or flying humanoid... Except for that one on the train. And of course my reward for getting all the shard-souls is the not ring of chaos. It doesn't even unequip the absolutely OP skull necklace unlike the warlock's necklace.
Overall, it was definitively a good castlevania even if a bit too self-referential at times. Like having not-Alucard being literally a librarian above a hole and voiced by Alucard's voice actor.
>>
>>572502501
Wings of Vi if you want something that is actually hard, Dustforce, Sanabi, wordless if you want a more original thing that is actually a turn-based metroidvania which nice gameplay and a disappointing ending.

The castle is the worst part of Broken Sword 3 so far. Stealth sections, walking back and forth for puzzles, constant character switching back and forth and an actual spam of fixed camera angle switching. It's so annoying because running against a wall makes you stop with an animation too. Could have had some cool 3d platforming here if they went all the way instead of some weird mix that controls like a mix of old RE and Tomb Raider.

Not the cheapest, but I'd go Xcom ultimate collection: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/20109/XCOM_Ultimate_Collection/
You get to play Enemy unknown for the OG experience, then Enemy Within, then Xcom 2, then War of the Chosen, and then you get to ignore Chimera Squad.
Always play ironman mode, always name your soldiers. At the very least name them when they get a class and you take them on a mission. (classless can die pretty quickly, so you might run out of names) Name them after friends, fictional characters, celebs, whatever. Trust me: having a fat alien come out of nowhere and try to bumrush one of your soldiers is a lot more nerve wrecking (and fun) if that soldiers is a character you actually care about, instead of "Jack Smith, some guy".
>>
>>572502694
The earlier X Universe games are all mega cheap if space trucking / bounty hunting / etc sounds appealing. X4's the popular one these days, but X2 and all the X3s are still good 100+ hour games for about a dollar each. They have a pretty steep learning curve though.

You'd have to wait a couple days for me to figure that out, but at least I'm enjoying it right now and the reviews are pretty decent (83% including Chinese reviews).
Some of the complaints were about clan management being too much about making money, QoL stuff and some parts of the game being too easy.
The game's still in EA with a 1.0 release possibly at the end of the year or early next year.

I am cursed in FTL today to a degree I never thought possible.
For two runs now my crew have been getting anally annihilated. Fighting boarders on my ship? A missile *will* hit the room they're fighting in, it *will* stun my crew giving the enemy time to kill them, and if not a fight then the room they're in will just keep getting sniped over and over and over again infinitely until they die. Even though I have an augment that heals my crew slowly even outside the medbay and I really shouldn't be losing any, I've lost about 11 crew today anyway.

Broken Sword 3 was the most funny and I really liked the addition of block sliding and Zelda style dungeon puzzles. Would be cool if they ever remade this with a proper control scheme and less frantic switching between premade camera angles.

Don't know if better, but U-Boat has plotting firing solutions.
You need to figure out the distance speed and angle of enemy ships. Your crew fill these out automatically, but you can do it manually yourself to (potentially) speed things up.

I love how theoretically everyone should have long forgotten Code Ment by now, but yet like 20 years later it's still as instantly quotable as DBZ abridged.

>I like plotting out firing missions
Turns out my first half was right, my 2nd half was wrong.
I am satisfied.

Tried the They Are Here demo again, I didn't know there was something new added to it. Decent atmosphere, but as somebody who loves aliens and UFOs it's annoying to see how "unrealistic" the scenario is. Can't say I know any alleged abductees who report a tall grey opening their car door and onions-facing as they snatch them like webm related, for example.

The teaser for Chordosis on Itch.io had incredible atmosphere, with a uniquely disturbing approach to alien horror, but it seems like the dev abandoned the project. Everything else I see on Steam is lazy, despite the topic being popular again. There's one upcoming strategy game titled Majestic that looks intriguing, based on actual lore and history, though it's using AI art as placeholder.
