Trump: ‘Communists are finally making their move’

President Trump on Thursday reacted to a string of victories from progressive candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), a democratic socialist, saying “the communists” are “making their move” after two incumbent lawmakers lost their Democratic primaries.

“The Communists are finally making their move. I’ve been waiting and preparing for this for a long time,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “It’s easy to be a Communist — All you have to do is say, ‘I’ll give you everything,’ but that means you’re taking it away from others that have earned it.”

“Over thousands of years, that Ideology has not worked once,” he added, doubling down on comments he made early Wednesday. “The game is on. Enjoy watching!”

On Tuesday, Mamdani went 3 for 3 in his endorsements across various House primary races in New York, putting himself at odds with sitting lawmakers in his party and key establishment Democrats who backed other candidates.

Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander ousted Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) in the 10th Congressional District. Political newcomer Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) in the 13th District. State Rep. Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist, won against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the 7th District.

Hunter Biden, the son of former President Biden, said the wins showed voters are more receptive to candidates with more definitive ideological positions as opposed to establishment Democrats.

“The middle is not a strategy,” the younger Biden said after Tuesday’s election night. “Voters reached past the establishment to grab someone who actually believes something.”

While the victories highlighted Mamdani’s growing influence within his party, Republicans hoped to capitalize on the ideological divides within the party.

At a closed-door House GOP meeting on Wednesday, National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Richard Hudson (N.C.) reportedly told fellow lawmakers that “Democrats have a Bolshevik revolution going on in their primaries.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), however, has waved off concerns that the party may be moving too far left or that the victories may be a political threat come November.

“The mayor and I agree to strongly disagree about some of his endorsements, and he’s got work to do in terms of the conversations that he’s going to have with members of Congress moving forward,” Jeffries said, noting that he and Mamdani have a “very good” relationship and speak frequently.
