Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any floor plans of GF House’s second floor, but if it’s any consolation, we could possibly make guesses based on the first floor’s plan from the art book:

So the library is slightly larger than the biggest bedroom—rather smaller than I’d imagined, since Demizu usually depicts it like this in her exaggerated and thematic style:

Still, we do have a notion of its size, which doesn’t quite answer my main question, but does help with estimates: how many books are there?

My family owns about 2,000 books, and approximately 1,500 of them are kept in a room that looks to be about a quarter of the size of GF’s library. Given that, I’m going to guess that the orphans have access to roughly 6,000 books. That might be too generous of an estimate, but honestly less than I was imagining.

Another ambiguous tool I’ve missed is the Ray measurement— he read all the books in the house in six years. Most of this reading seems to have been done after he turned six– we don’t know when he learned to read, but it does seem like he didn’t launch his literary crusade until he started investigating the truth about the house in earnest. If I’m estimating 6,000 books in the library, Ray would have had to read 1,000 books a year, on average—about three books per day. Considering the average for fast readers appears to be about 55 books a year, that’s… that’s a lot. I wouldn’t put it past Ray, but considering he doesn’t spend ALL his time reading, since he also helps out with chores all day, cares for the kids, takes the tests, tutors, and hangs out with Norman and Emma… 6,000 looks like a stretch. 3,000 seems like a superior statistical match— but the library does look at least a little larger than that…

Demizu’s artwork does seem to depict a larger library than the anime— which might just be her style, but also seems in keeping with the GF floor plan. From that, we know that the library extends all the way up to the ROOF, like, the literal rafters, they physically couldn’t fit any more. It’s not shown in the floor plan I think, but the panel with the trio entering the library seems to suggest natural lighting coming from the ceiling? Which I love and hope is accurate.

The anime library looks like it’s technically the same size, but the flat CGI textures and dark colors make it feel a lot less expansive, fantastical, and even practical (Gilda shouldn’t be the only one with glasses if they’re all trying to read in that rather ominous lighting).

Also, these references threw another wrench in my foolhardy attempt to rationalize a steampunky manga library. Given my family’s approximately 2,000 book count, and considering that we only have the equivalent to maybe one wall of those floor-to-wall bookshelves (if even), 6,000 seems like the visible number, although 3,000 still makes a lot more sense…

Offhand I'm unaware of any interviews where Shirai specifically mentions the limits of Grace Field library's collection (and absolutely no word on Isabella's private one), but we do have this paragraph from the first light novel:

Within Tolkien’s canon, The Hobbit is an in-universe book that was “written” by Bilbo Baggins, who occasionally lies/embellishes/exaggerates things. The tonal differences between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are explained by Bilbo and Frodo/Sam being different kinds of storytellers, with different relationships to “the truth.” This idea is the core of how I’m adapting the novel! Bilbo is an unreliable narrator who is literally ‘drawing’ from his own limited experiences; the different art styles reflect the different perspectives of other characters. The “dwarf art style” in this chapter is inspired by stonework/metalwork in general— but especially by a mix of art deco, Celtic art, and European folk art. The central tension of the comic is between Bilbo and Thorin, who each have wildly different ideas about what kind of story they’re in. Thorin is in a grand fantasy epic, while Bilbo is in a lighthearted children’s book adventure. The tragedy is, obviously, that only one side of the story ever gets to be fully told.On a sillier note, a few years ago I had my first gay crush on a lesbian who sang while playing the piano. This chapter is dedicated to the piano lesbian. I hope they’re doing well, wherever they are. I needed help trying to recreate a chicken recipe of hers that I have been craving, because I could only remember a few ingredients. You amazing people of r/recipes came through and gave me so many wonderful suggestions. With a mix of all your advice, I made it tonight. I was nervous as I was putting it together. I felt like there had to be something more to it, but I went with using just the ingredients I knew (as suggested by Ethril). I felt like there was something I was forgetting. Something about brown specks in the sauce. I went with it anyway, and figured I would know what to add at the end by taste. I took chicken cutlets and hammered them flat. Dredged in flour and sauteed in butter (high heat). I burned the butter a little. I remembered my mom saying that butter is the one thing that is ok to burn (as long as it is not smoking furiously) so I left it alone, and smiled at the memory. I was pleased to see the chicken brown to the color I remember. When I flipped the chicken I added the zucchini spears and browned those too. When the chicken was done (just a couple minutes) I set it aside and covered it in tinfoil to keep it warm, then turned the zucchini and browned the peaches in the same pan. It only took a few minutes to brown everything and when the zucchini and peaches were done I put them aside with the chicken. I deglazed the empty pan with chardonnay. My mom wasn't a big wine person, so I went with the cheapest they had. I suddenly remembered that sound the wine would make when it hit the hot pan, a huge hiss. Mom used to tell me to step back before she poured it in, because it would splash a little. I felt like I was nine years old again. I added three big dollops of sour cream and dissolved it in the hot wine. I didn't know what I was going to do next, this was all I had planned. Then I saw the little brown flecks come up. It was that burned butter! I just about cried. I tasted it, and suddenly in my mind I was standing in her kitchen as a kid watching her cook. This was it. It was that simple. I added a couple spoonfuls of the liquid from the canned peaches to take away a little of the wine's tartness, and the sauce was perfect. Just like she used to make.
